CHAPTER XLVIII
The Guardians Who Cannot Die
Arc 2 – The Shadow Conspiracy
---
The moment Kashihero turned toward the Veil Door—
The darkness changed.
It did not tremble.
It did not roar.
It simply shifted.
And that quiet shift carried more danger than any explosion.
---
The path behind them—the thin裂 opening that connected the Veil to the mortal forest—began to flicker like a dying flame.
The doorway was still there.
But something had stepped between them and escape.
---
Arin felt it before he saw it.
A cold pressure touched the back of his neck.
Not like fear.
Not like killing intent.
Something worse.
Recognition.
As if the Veil itself had decided to acknowledge them.
---
Lucas stopped moving.
His expression hardened.
"…Master."
---
Kashihero had already seen them.
Two figures emerged from the endless black.
At first, they seemed like smoke.
Then shape formed.
Tall.
Humanoid.
Their bodies were made entirely of shadow, yet sharper than steel.
Long cloaks of darkness flowed behind them like torn night.
In each of their hands—
A sword.
Not forged metal.
Not spirit weaponry.
But condensed void.
Blades that seemed to erase light around them.
---
Arin instinctively stepped back.
"…What are those?"
---
The system activated instantly.
For the first time since entering the Veil—
Its warning tone became violent.
---
[CRITICAL WARNING]
Hostile Entities Identified.
Designation: VEIL PROTECTORS
Class: Boundary Guardians
Threat Rank: UNMEASURABLE
---
Special Properties:
• Non-living entities
• Cannot be permanently destroyed
• Will reconstruct after termination
• Exist as law-bound shadow manifestations
---
Combat Note: Direct force ineffective.
Victory Condition: Psychological breach required.
---
Lucas cursed under his breath.
"…Immortal constructs."
---
Kashihero narrowed his eyes.
"…No."
"…Worse."
---
The two shadow guardians raised their swords in perfect synchronization.
No sound.
No emotion.
No hesitation.
---
Then—
They attacked.
---
The First Strike
Neither guardian moved in a normal way.
They did not dash.
They did not leap.
They vanished—
And reappeared directly before Kashihero and Lucas.
---
CLANG!
---
Kashihero drew his father's katana in one smooth motion.
The blade screamed against shadow steel.
Sparks of black light exploded outward.
At the same instant—
Lucas crossed both arms and formed a demonic barrier.
The second guardian's blade slammed into it with enough force to crack the empty space beneath his feet.
---
Arin barely reacted in time.
The pressure wave threw him backward.
He crashed hard against invisible ground.
---
"…Too fast…"
---
These were not enemies that fought with strength.
They fought with inevitability.
Like natural laws given form.
---
The Rule of the Veil
Kashihero pushed the blade away and countered with a slash aimed directly through the guardian's torso.
The katana cut cleanly through it.
The shadow body split in half—
Then instantly reformed.
---
No wound.
No delay.
No pain.
---
Lucas snarled.
"…Annoying."
---
He released abyssal flames.
Black infernal fire swallowed one guardian completely.
For a moment—
Its form vanished into the blaze.
Then it stepped out again.
Untouched.
---
Arin's eyes widened.
"They really can't die…"
---
The system responded.
---
[CONFIRMED]
Destruction only delays reconstruction.
Permanent defeat impossible via conventional force.
---
The Veil Changes Tactics
Then—
The world shifted.
---
The darkness around them bent inward.
The battlefield dissolved.
The guardians stepped back.
Not retreating.
Waiting.
---
Kashihero immediately understood.
"…The illusion phase."
---
Lucas looked around sharply.
"…So now it starts."
---
Arin frowned.
"…Illusion?"
---
Before anyone answered—
The Veil swallowed him.
---
Arin's Nightmare
The darkness around Arin broke apart like shattered glass.
And suddenly—
He was no longer in the Veil.
---
He was home.
---
His childhood home.
The small wooden house.
The broken gate.
The rain.
---
Arin froze.
"No…"
---
He knew this place.
Knew this night.
---
Inside the house—
His mother screamed.
His father shouted.
Then—
Blood.
---
A masked killer stood in the doorway.
Sword dripping red.
---
Arin's breathing stopped.
"…That's impossible…"
---
This was the memory buried deepest inside him.
The memory he had never spoken of.
Not to Lucas.
Not even to Kashihero.
---
He had been seven years old.
Hidden beneath the floorboards.
Forced to watch as a murderer slaughtered both his parents.
---
The killer had never been found.
---
And now—
That same masked figure slowly turned toward him.
---
"…You survived again."
---
Arin staggered back.
"…No…"
---
Lucas's Illusion
Elsewhere—
Lucas stood in a ruined underworld throne hall.
---
Before him stood countless demons kneeling.
And at the far end—
A throne of black bone.
Occupied.
---
Demon King Xarge.
---
Lucas's crimson eyes darkened.
"…You."
---
Xarge smiled.
Cold.
Cruel.
Ancient.
---
"Still serving another master?"
---
Lucas clenched his fists.
The illusion pressed deeper—
Not attacking his body.
Attacking loyalty.
Identity.
Pride.
---
Kashihero's Trial
Kashihero's illusion was different.
No battlefield.
No enemy.
No blood.
---
He stood in silence before his father.
Alive.
Standing beneath moonlight.
Holding the katana.
---
"…You failed."
---
The words struck harder than swords.
---
His father's gaze was calm.
Disappointed.
---
"You inherited my blade…"
"But not my burden."
---
Kashihero said nothing.
But inside—
The Veil was testing him where no blade could reach.
---
Outside Reality
In truth—
Their bodies still stood in combat stance.
Frozen.
Motionless.
---
The two guardians advanced slowly.
Swords raised.
Preparing execution strikes.
---
The Key to Victory
The system flashed one hidden line—
Visible only to Kashihero.
---
[VEIL COMBAT LAW]
These guardians cannot be defeated by overpowering them.
To break them: Break the illusion cycle. Reject imposed truth.
---
Hollow Sigil — Elsewhere
Far away—
Deep beneath ruined stone catacombs—
The ritual circle burned brighter.
---
Cloaked Hollow Sigil priests chanted in unison.
Blood flowed through carved channels in the floor.
At the center—
A massive obsidian gate pulsed with crimson cracks.
---
One elder priest trembled.
"…The seal is nearly broken."
---
Another lifted both arms.
"The vessel resonance has destabilized the Veil."
"Perfect timing."
---
Above the altar—
A fragment of Demon King Xarge's aura expanded.
Breathing.
Growing.
Awakening.
---
"…Soon," whispered the priest.
"…our king returns."
---
Back Inside the Veil
The guardians' swords descended.
Closer.
Closer.
---
Arin was still trapped in the nightmare of his parents' murder.
Lucas remained locked in confrontation with Xarge's illusion.
Kashihero stood before his dead father.
Silent.
Still.
---
And the shadow blades were only inches away.
---
But then—
Kashihero smiled.
A small, cold smile.
---
Because he had understood something.
This battle was never about survival.
Never about strength.
Never about killing immortal shadows.
---
It was about breaking belief.
---
And the moment he raised his eyes toward the illusion of his father—
The Veil trembled.
