Nina Jacobs named the cat Lexy.
For the rest of the journey, Lexy got along well with the two of them.
Whenever they encountered zombies blocking the road, Lexy would stand watch on the roof of the car, its expression alert as it surveyed the surroundings.
Seeing Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner kill all the zombies, it would relax and jump back inside the car.
"Where did you come from, anyway? What about your previous owner?"
Nina Jacobs asked, looking at the now-quiet Lexy.
No wonder it had managed to survive in this apocalypse; it was incredibly alert to zombies.
But Lexy, like Wayne Warner, only ever gave her a one-word reply.
Nina Jacobs smiled. She had long grown accustomed to this unspoken, comfortable silence on the road.
As evening approached, the number of zombies on the road gradually began to increase again.
Nina Jacobs checked the map. There should be a small town ahead.
These zombies must have come from that town.
