Chapter 19 - Pass 2

Midnight arrived quietly, almost peacefully. The sea breeze drifted gently through the sleeping village while lanterns flickered outside wooden homes and distant waves crashed softly against the cliffs. Guards stood near the outer barricades holding fishing spears tightly while dogs occasionally barked toward the jungle for reasons nobody understood yet. Fear still lingered across the village after sunset, but exhaustion had finally forced most people indoors. Inside one of the small wooden houses, Vikram sat near the window tightening the cloth around his injured leg while trying not to hiss from pain. The gunshot wound burned constantly now. Across from him, Seraphina quietly folded blankets for several children hiding inside the house. Even after everything she had suffered, she still tried helping others first. Vikram looked toward her tiredly. "You should sleep." Seraphina glanced back immediately. "You're not sleeping either." "That's because I'm injured." "You're always injured." Vikram looked offended. "That sounded personal." A tiny smile appeared on her face despite the tension surrounding the village. Before either could continue, a deafening explosion suddenly shattered the silence.

The entire house shook violently. Children screamed instantly while dust fell from the ceiling. Vikram nearly stumbled as another explosion thundered somewhere outside. He rushed toward the doorway alongside Seraphina and froze the moment he stepped outside. Flames rose into the night sky near the western side of the village while villagers ran through the streets in panic. A destroyed wooden cart burned near the center path and one injured man lay collapsed nearby covered in blood. "Pirates!" someone screamed. "They're here!" Another explosion erupted immediately afterward. A cannonball tore directly through a nearby house, obliterating half the structure as burning splinters exploded across the road. Villagers dragged screaming children away while others desperately tried putting out flames with water buckets. Then the jungle itself began shaking. Trees snapped apart one after another while a horrifying grinding noise echoed through the darkness. Steam hissed loudly somewhere beyond the forest. Slowly, impossibly, the pirate ship emerged from the jungle itself.

It did not sail. It crawled.

Massive reinforced wheels crushed roots and stones beneath the hull while steam burst from iron pipes attached underneath the vessel. Cannons rotated unnaturally across its sides while pirates screamed and laughed from the deck above. The giant ship rolled through the forest like a living monster, trampling fences and huts beneath its enormous weight. One villager whispered in complete horror, "That thing is alive…" Another cannon fired instantly. The village well exploded apart into flying stone and water. Panic consumed the settlement completely. The village leader grabbed several men aggressively. "Take every woman and child behind the waterfall route NOW!" Men rushed through the chaos pulling terrified families away while others armed themselves with spears, axes, and fishing hooks. Dogs barked wildly. Oxen strained violently against ropes. The living ship continued advancing deeper into the village, crushing homes beneath its wheels while flames spread rapidly across rooftops.

Then a familiar voice thundered across the burning streets.

"SERAPHINA!"

The captain stood atop the deck illuminated by firelight, one boot resting against the railing while smoke curled around his scarred face. His single good eye searched the village until it locked directly onto her. "There you are," he shouted. Seraphina immediately grabbed Vikram's arm tightly. The captain spread his arms mockingly toward her. "Come back willingly," he roared, "or I'll kill every single person in this village!" Pirates behind him laughed loudly while firing rifles into the air. Seraphina trembled beside Vikram. For one brief moment she looked terrified again, small and powerless beneath the captain's gaze. Then suddenly something inside her broke. "NO!" Her scream echoed loudly enough that even the surrounding chaos seemed to pause. The captain blinked in surprise. Seraphina stepped forward shaking violently while tears rolled freely down her face. "You ruined my life!" she screamed. "You kept saying nobody would save me! You kept saying I belonged to you!" Several pirates exchanged uncomfortable glances hearing genuine hatred in her voice. "You monster!" she cried. "I prayed every day for you to die!" The captain's expression twisted with fury. "Enough."

He suddenly grabbed a lantern from beside him and hurled it downward toward several chained slaves near the ship's front. Fire exploded instantly. The slaves ignited screaming horribly as flames spread across their bodies. Villagers recoiled in horror while burning men ran blindly through the streets begging for help. One flaming slave collapsed against a water barrel while another accidentally spread fire across nearby rooftops trying to extinguish himself. Chaos multiplied instantly. Pirates stormed into the village from behind the ship, kicking open doors and looting homes while gunshots echoed through the night. One pirate dragged a crying villager by the hair while another smashed open storage barrels laughing drunkenly. Meanwhile the living ship itself continued moving through the village like a beast. Cannons rotated slowly. Steam hissed from beneath its hull like breathing. The giant wheels crushed homes and fences beneath impossible weight.

"Run!" Vikram grabbed Seraphina's hand immediately and pulled her through the smoke-filled streets. Behind them the ship actually turned toward their direction, its massive hull grinding through burning buildings while cannons slowly adjusted aim. "It's following us!" Seraphina cried. "I noticed!" Vikram shouted back. Another cannon fired. The explosion behind them sent both stumbling violently across the road as burning debris rained around them. Nearby the village leader slammed a fishing spear through a pirate's chest before shouting toward the remaining villagers. "Forget the pirates! Stop the fires first!" Men rushed carrying water buckets while others fought desperately using farming tools and axes. One pirate screamed after village dogs tackled him directly into the mud while another got launched sideways when an enraged ox smashed horns-first into his ribs hard enough to crack bone audibly. The peaceful fishing village had become a battlefield.

Meanwhile the monstrous ship continued pursuing Vikram and Seraphina relentlessly through the burning streets. "LEFT!" Vikram shouted suddenly. They sharply turned between two collapsing houses while the giant ship attempted following them. Then suddenly all the cannons shifted toward one side together. The massive vessel tilted dangerously. One wheel cracked loudly beneath the uneven ground. For one unstable moment the entire ship leaned sideways before finally toppling with an earth-shaking crash that flattened several empty huts beneath it. Pirates screamed while tumbling across the deck as steam burst violently into the air. Vikram barely had time processing relief before something massive slammed directly onto his back. He crashed face-first into dirt with a painful grunt. The captain had jumped from the falling ship. The pirate wrapped one arm tightly around Vikram's throat while punching him repeatedly across the ribs. "You little rat!" he snarled. Vikram struggled violently but the captain's grip felt like iron. Seraphina immediately grabbed the captain from behind trying desperately to pull him away. "LET HIM GO!" The captain ignored her completely while tightening the chokehold harder. Vikram's vision blurred rapidly. "You think you can steal from me?" Suddenly Seraphina bit directly into the captain's arm hard enough to draw blood instantly. The captain roared in pain and loosened his grip just enough for Vikram to gasp air again. "You bitch!" He backhanded Seraphina brutally across the face, throwing her onto the ground.

"SERAPHINA!" Vikram lunged instantly but the captain moved faster. He pulled a pistol from his belt and jammed it directly against Vikram's forehead. Everything froze. Villagers nearby stopped moving immediately. Even the pirates paused. The captain breathed heavily while blood dripped from Seraphina's bite wound down his arm. "Nobody moves," he growled. The village leader stood nearby gripping a spear tightly while several villagers aimed bows toward the captain. But nobody attacked because the pistol remained pressed against Vikram's head. The captain grabbed Seraphina violently by the wrist. "We leave," he snarled toward everyone, "or he dies." Seraphina immediately started crying again. "Please don't hurt him…" The captain yanked her closer aggressively. "Move." The villagers looked ready attacking anyway, but the captain pressed the gun harder against Vikram's forehead. "Try it."

Silence spread across the burning village.

Vikram looked toward Seraphina. Terrified. Helpless. The same expression she wore back on the pirate ship. Then he remembered his promise. I'll protect you. No matter what. Something inside him steadied. The fear remained, but underneath it came decision. Slowly he raised one hand toward the pistol. The captain narrowed his eye immediately. "Don't." Vikram ignored him completely. His fingers wrapped around the gun barrel. The captain's expression shifted instantly. Then the gun fired. Pain exploded through Vikram's shoulder like molten metal. Seraphina screamed. But even while getting shot, Vikram yanked the pistol sideways with everything he had. The captain stumbled unexpectedly. At that exact moment a rock smashed directly against the captain's forehead. Seraphina stood nearby breathing heavily while gripping another stone shakily in both hands. The captain stared at her in disbelief. "You…" Vikram immediately shoved him backward creating distance between them. The captain cursed furiously while wiping blood from his face. "You stupid little—"

A loud whistle suddenly echoed across the battlefield.

The village leader lowered two fingers from his mouth calmly. Then darkness moved.

Dogs exploded from every direction first. Dozens of them. Every village dog charged simultaneously toward the captain snarling viciously. One latched directly onto his arm while another bit deep into his leg. "GET OFF!" the captain screamed while trying kicking them away. Then came the oxen. Massive beasts thundered through the burning streets directly toward him. The captain fired wildly killing one dog instantly, but another leaped onto his back immediately afterward. An ox slammed horns-first into his side hard enough to launch him into the mud. For the first time real fear appeared on the captain's face. Villagers blocked nearby pirates from helping while the dogs continued tearing into him viciously. Another ox charged. Then another. The captain screamed as horns pierced flesh while dogs ripped into his arms and throat. "YOU BELONG TO ME!" he screamed desperately toward Seraphina through blood and mud. Seraphina stared at him silently for several seconds. Then slowly shook her head. "No." A final ox crushed directly onto his chest. The screaming stopped. Only growling remained.

Slowly the battle quieted afterward. The surviving pirates fled injured into the jungle while villagers focused extinguishing fires across the ruined settlement. Smoke drifted beneath moonlight while wounded people cried softly in the distance. Vikram sat weakly against broken wood clutching his bleeding shoulder. Then Seraphina suddenly hugged him tightly. This time she smiled through tears. "You saved me…" Vikram winced painfully before laughing weakly. He looked toward the captain's body disappearing beneath furious dogs. "Nah," he muttered softly. "You saved me."
