Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – Echoes of Awakening

_____________

The ruins of Nerathis felt different now.

Not just unstable—

Aware.

The faint glow of ancient structures flickered irregularly, like a heartbeat that had lost its rhythm.

Something had changed.

And everyone felt it.

They had retreated far from the lower depths.

Far enough that the crushing pressure had eased.

But not far enough to feel safe.

No one spoke at first.

The silence wasn't empty—

It was heavy.

Lior lay resting against a broken pillar, breathing slowly, the fragment hovering faintly above his chest.

For the first time since everything began—

It wasn't reacting.

It wasn't pulling.

It was quiet.

Izumi sat nearby, watching it.

"…It stopped."

Dianara nodded.

"For now."

She knelt beside Lior, checking the fragment's stability.

"But that doesn't mean it's over."

Izumi exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

Because he could still feel it.

That presence.

Deep below.

Watching.

Waiting.

Mira leaned against a wall, unusually quiet.

Her usual smirk gone.

"…That thing…"

She muttered.

"…I've never felt something like that."

Seraphina stood a short distance away.

Her posture straight.

Unshaken.

But her silence spoke more than words.

Izumi looked at her.

"…You knew something like that existed, didn't you?"

Seraphina didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…Yes."

Everyone turned.

Dianara's expression sharpened.

"You knew?"

Seraphina's gaze didn't waver.

"I knew something was sealed here."

"But not its current state."

Mira crossed her arms.

"…That's a pretty big detail to leave out."

Seraphina met her gaze.

"And if I told you earlier?"

"Would it have changed anything?"

Silence.

Because the answer was obvious.

No.

Dianara stood up slowly.

"…We need to reassess everything."

She projected the map again.

But this time—

It looked different.

The previously stable zones now flickered.

Multiple areas showed signs of instability.

"The seal isn't just weakening in one place."

Her voice grew more serious.

"It's spreading."

Izumi frowned.

"…Because of what happened down there?"

"Yes."

Dianara nodded.

"And because of the fragments."

Lior stirred slightly.

"…They're connected."

Everyone looked at him.

He sat up slowly, still weak—but conscious.

"I can feel it now."

His voice was quieter than before.

Clearer.

"The fragments…"

"…They're reacting to the same thing."

Izumi's expression hardened.

"…The thing behind the gate."

Lior nodded.

"…It's calling them."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"Then the objective is clear."

"Stabilize all fragments."

Dianara shook her head immediately.

"That won't be enough."

Everyone turned.

Her expression was serious.

"For the first time, it directly interacted with us."

"That means the seal has entered a critical phase."

Mira frowned.

"…Meaning?"

Dianara's voice lowered.

"…Even if we stabilize the fragments…"

"…it may not fully stop it anymore."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Izumi clenched his fists.

"…Then what do we do?"

No one answered immediately.

Because this time—

There wasn't an easy answer.

A New Direction

Seraphina finally spoke.

"…We change our approach."

Dianara looked at her.

"…How?"

Seraphina's gaze shifted toward the deeper ruins.

"…We find the source."

Izumi frowned.

"…We just came from there."

"No," Seraphina said calmly.

"That was a seal point."

"Not the origin."

Dianara's eyes widened slightly.

"…You're saying there's something deeper than that?"

Seraphina nodded.

"Yes."

"The core of the seal system."

Mira let out a low whistle.

"…So we go even deeper."

Izumi sighed.

"…Of course we do."

Lior looked uneasy.

"…Will we even survive that?"

No one answered.

Dianara slowly nodded.

"…It makes sense."

"If the system is failing…"

"…then the core is either damaged…"

"…or being influenced."

Izumi looked at her.

"…By the Architect?"

Dianara didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Mira smirked slightly.

"…So this is their real plan."

"Not just collecting fragments…"

"…but breaking the whole system."

Seraphina's voice hardened.

"And releasing what's inside."

Izumi's Decision

Izumi stood up slowly.

His expression more serious than before.

"…Then we stop them."

Simple.

Direct.

But this time—

He understood what that meant.

Dianara looked at him.

"…You saw it."

"…You felt it."

"…This isn't something you can just fight head-on."

Izumi nodded.

"…I know."

He looked at his hand.

A faint layer of frost appeared—

Then faded.

"…That's why I need to get stronger."

Mira grinned slightly.

"There he goes again."

Seraphina watched him closely.

"…Strength alone won't be enough."

Izumi met her gaze.

"Then I'll learn control too."

For the first time—

Seraphina didn't challenge him.

End Build-Up

The ruins trembled again.

Not violently—

But enough.

A reminder.

The time they had—

Was running out.

Dianara closed the map.

"…We move soon."

Seraphina nodded.

"No delays."

Mira stretched slightly.

"…Guess we're diving into hell again."

Izumi looked toward the darkness ahead.

"…Yeah."

"But this time…"

His voice hardened.

"…we're ready."

Far below—

Something stirred again.

Stronger than before.

Closer than ever.

They didn't wait long.

Rest was a luxury they could no longer afford.

Within the hour, they began moving again.

This time—

Not toward another control point.

But toward something deeper.

Something older.

Dianara led the way.

Her eyes scanning every structure, every rune carved into the ancient walls.

"…There should be an access path," she muttered.

"The core system wouldn't be directly exposed."

Mira walked beside her.

"So we're looking for a hidden door in a cursed underwater ruin."

She smirked.

"Easy."

Izumi sighed.

"Try taking this seriously for once."

"I am."

She glanced at him.

"This is fun."

Izumi shook his head.

"…You're impossible."

Behind them, Lior followed quietly, the fragment now dim but steady.

Seraphina remained at the rear.

Watching.

Always watching.

They moved through a narrow corridor.

The walls here were different.

Darker.

Covered in symbols none of them had seen before.

Dianara stopped suddenly.

"…Wait."

Everyone paused.

"What is it?" Izumi asked.

She stepped closer to the wall.

Her hand hovering just above the carvings.

"…These aren't control runes."

"They're older."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"…Older than the seal?"

Dianara nodded slowly.

"…Yes."

Mira frowned.

"…That doesn't sound good."

The symbols faintly glowed as Dianara traced them.

"…This language…"

She hesitated.

"…It's not from any known kingdom."

Izumi raised an eyebrow.

"…So who made this place?"

Silence.

Then—

Lior spoke.

Quietly.

"…The ones before us."

They all turned to him.

"What do you mean?" Izumi asked.

Lior looked at the wall.

"…The fragment… it's showing me things."

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…Memories?"

He nodded.

"…Not mine."

"…Theirs."

A chill ran through the group.

The wall shifted.

A low rumble echoed through the corridor.

The symbols lit up—

Then moved.

Rearranging.

Forming a new pattern.

Mira stepped back slightly.

"…Okay, that's definitely not normal."

Dianara's voice was tense.

"…It's reacting to the fragment."

Seraphina's hand moved to her blade.

"Be ready."

A section of the wall slowly opened.

Revealing a hidden path.

Dark.

Descending even deeper.

Izumi stared at it.

"…Found it."

Mira grinned.

"Told you it'd be easy."

"No, you didn't."

"Same thing."

They stepped inside.

The moment they crossed the threshold—

The passage sealed behind them.

A deep echo followed.

Like a lock clicking into place.

Izumi glanced back.

"…That's not concerning at all."

Mira shrugged.

"No turning back now."

Seraphina didn't look back.

"Good."

The path downward was unlike anything before.

No light.

No glow.

Just darkness.

Even the water felt different.

Still.

Heavy.

Silent.

Their movements echoed unnaturally.

Like the space itself was too large.

Too empty.

Izumi felt it again.

That presence.

Stronger now.

Closer.

"…We're getting near."

Dianara nodded.

"Yes."

"But something else…"

Her voice lowered.

"…This place isn't just part of the seal."

Izumi frowned.

"…Then what is it?"

Dianara didn't answer immediately.

Because she didn't know.

After a long descent—

They reached another chamber.

Massive.

Far larger than the previous facility.

At its center—

A structure stood.

Ancient.

Circular.

Surrounded by broken pillars.

And at its core—

A floating sphere of dark energy.

Izumi stopped.

"…What is that?"

Dianara's voice was almost a whisper.

"…I don't know."

"But…"

Her eyes narrowed.

"…It's not part of the seal."

Mira tilted her head.

"…Then why is it here?"

No one answered.

Because at that moment—

The sphere pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

It reacted.

To them.

Lior stepped back suddenly.

"The fragment…"

It glowed again.

Stronger.

Resonating.

But not like before.

This time—

It wasn't responding to the seal.

It was responding to the sphere.

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…That's impossible."

Izumi looked at her.

"What is it?"

Her voice dropped.

"…The fragments aren't just keys."

"They're connected to something else."

Seraphina stepped forward slowly.

Her gaze locked onto the sphere.

"…Then this…"

"…is part of the truth."

Final Scene

The sphere pulsed again.

Stronger.

A crack formed across its surface.

Thin.

But real.

From within—

A faint glow emerged.

Not light.

Not darkness.

Something else.

Something unknown.

Izumi's voice was low.

"…We're not ready for this."

Mira smirked slightly.

"…Too late."

Seraphina raised her blade.

"Stay alert."

Dianara whispered—

"…What have we found…?"

Far below—

Beyond even this chamber—

The sealed entity stirred once more.

And this time—

It wasn't alone.
