Chapter 1 - Boots on the ground

The smell of wax and air freshener filled the room as a large cardboard box was sat down. Stacks of cardboard, wrapped furniture and several objects that could pass for art if you squinted hard enough were scattered around the house.

It was a vintage old fashioned home with two floors. A woman wipes off her hands before a bang sounds out. Root, a boy around the age of eight with brown skin and black hair in neat cornrows stood next to a freshly made dent in the wall. A dent he made, something that would've been a slight inconvenience if it wasn't for the fact that it was a solid brick wall.

This was almost a tradition at this point, one of her boys moving furniture and something breaks, from a lamp to the moving truck they'd JUST rented. "Root! Stop tearing up the house we just paid the deposit. I don't need you breaking the furniture either." The woman says with a scowl making Root stop his foot mid kick and nod with his hands behind his back. Smiling innocently like he wasn't about to kick the couch into a filing cabinet. "And go find your brothers already. And take your sister!" The woman says then Root groans "Do I gotta? I don't want some lamo wimpy girl following me all day. Just look at her she's so small and looks like she's never had anything that wasn't some fancy brand mush." Root says upset at being told to bring Elara along. He hated getting stuck playing babysitter, but it was more like carrying a piece of glass that cried every time he walked too fast or hit her too hard. Always getting scolded for not being "gentle" with her. It wasn't his fault that girls were so wimpy! Why is he always being punished, Root thought as he growled. Elara was a six year old girl skin as white as milk, freckles on her face and Everything about her screamed out expensive. From her frilly blue dress that was way to expensive for them to afford to even her hair in a ponytail with a ribbon too expensive to be within ten miles of their tax bracket. And that's because she was expensive,or at least used to be before she was adopted into their loud messy family two months ago. Two months of Root ride alongs and having to play nice. Be a glorified babysitter everyday was beyond annoying for the boy.

As Root was about to argue when his mother glared at him. Immediately shutting him up and he started walking out the door. He was many things but not stupid enough to continue after that look.

Passing Elara who held a teddy bear to her chest and struggled to keep up behind him as he rushed out the door. Walking down the sidewalk with a brisk walk taking in the sights, rembering paths that looked interesting and how the kids he passed looked.'They look so weak, this place is full of nothing but runts.', Root thinks to himself before getting a grin, it was going to be really easy to "take over" the neighborhood. Imagining himself and his brothers bullying the other kids. Taking their things, pushing them into gross trash, or just making fun of them. It made Root feel at peace at the chance to do so, before a quiet shout and small patting feet behind him. "Wait! Wait! I can't keep up!" Elara says nearly sprinti to keep up with roots pace. Immediately make the boy's mood sour. He wasn't even walking fast and she was struggling. This was one of many reasons why he hated girls. Ignoring her he stops as he sees what he's looking for. Two boys on the ground wrestling each other. Wrestling being a nice term for beating each other senseless. Root watched with a grin as a tall boy with pale skin, black hair, a blue jacket and the same kind of black cargo pants that he was wearing picked up a smaller boy with tan skin, blonde hair and a yellow shirt then slammed him into the ground. The small one then kicks the tall one into the stomach making The tall one grunt and take a step back. Before the small one gets up and slams his shoulder into The tall one knocking them both to the ground before they start grappling each other. Both of them grinning as they do. The tall one was Trunk and the small one was Branch. One of them nine and the other one seven.

They were his brothers, and the two of them were playing too rough for normal children. Elara's lip quivers and she hugs her teddy bear tighter to her chest, almost trying to hide behind it as she watches her brothers play. This wouldn't be too odd of a scene for boy's their age if they weren't making craters in the ground each time they slammed each other or slide several feet into the ground when they get thrown into the air. "BOOOOYS!" Root screams before rushing at his brothers who pause their fight to look at Root as he thrusts out his hand. Taking turns to slap his brothers hands and punching them in the shoulders.

"Your finally done with the boxes. Told you doing the furniture was smart. There's way less of that then anything else. Should have just listened to us. Could have been playing all day if you did. All that space in that giant head of yours and you couldn't think of that." Branch says smugly as he looks down at his brother.
