Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – Stay Still

The room was dim.

Only one lantern burned.

Low.

Unsteady.

Hidden Inside the Palace

Li Xuan had brought him to a secluded chamber—unused, forgotten, far from prying eyes.

No servants.

No guards.

No witnesses.

Only them.

Control vs Reality

"Sit."

Shen Lian didn't move.

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

"I've had worse."

Li Xuan's gaze hardened.

"Sit."

This time—

it wasn't a suggestion.

He Listens (Barely)

Shen Lian lowered himself slowly.

Controlled.

Careful.

But the moment he did—

his breath hitched.

Just slightly.

Li Xuan noticed.

Of course he did.

Too Close Again

He stepped forward.

Knee brushing the edge of the floor beside him.

Close enough to see everything.

Too close to ignore anything.

"Let me see."

"No."

"That wasn't a question."

The Barrier Breaks

For a moment, Shen Lian didn't move.

Then—

slowly—

he lowered his guard.

Just enough.

Li Xuan reached forward—

fingers brushing against the blood-soaked fabric.

And for a split second—

Shen Lian tensed.

But didn't stop him.

The Injury

The wound was deep.

Not clean.

A blade—thin, precise.

Meant to kill.

Li Xuan's expression darkened.

"This wasn't random."

"I know."

"You were targeted."

A pause.

Then Shen Lian said quietly—

"Yes."

The First Real Answer

"By who?"

Silence.

Then—

"Someone inside the palace."

Li Xuan's eyes sharpened instantly.

"I thought so."

The Game Changes

"They're moving faster now," Shen Lian continued."Whoever is behind this… they're not just watching anymore."

"They're testing."

"Yes."

"And you're part of it."

Another pause.

"…Yes."

Li Xuan Understands

This isn't separate anymore.

Not the assassinations.

Not the court.

Not Shen Lian.

Not him.

It's all connected.

The Dangerous Realization

"They're using you," Li Xuan said.

"And they're framing you."

Shen Lian looked at him.

"You see it now."

"I always did."

A beat.

Then lower—

"I just didn't expect you to be in the center of it."

Closer Than Necessary

Li Xuan tore a strip of cloth, pressing it gently against the wound.

Shen Lian inhaled sharply—

but didn't pull away.

Didn't stop him.

The Shift in Power (Again)

"You should have stayed away," Shen Lian murmured.

"You should have told me the truth."

"That wouldn't have changed anything."

"It would have changed everything."

A Moment That Lingers

Their eyes met.

Too close.

Too quiet.

Too much unspoken.

Li Xuan's hand didn't move away.

Still pressing against him.

Still holding him there.

The Truth They Keep Avoiding

"You came back," Li Xuan said.

"You were injured."

"That's not why."

"Then why?"

Silence.

And Then—

"Because I needed to see you."

Again.

But this time—

he didn't look away when he said it.

Something Breaks (Softly)

Li Xuan's expression shifted.

Not softer.

Not weaker.

Just—

more certain.

The Almost Confession

"You're dangerous," Shen Lian said.

"I know."

"You make me lose control."

"Good."

That made him pause.

The Line Gets Blurred

"You shouldn't want that."

"I do."

"You don't understand what that means."

"Then explain it."

A beat.

Then—

quietly—

"If I lose control… I won't stop."

Silence

The lantern flickered.

The room felt smaller.

Closer.

Heavier.

Li Xuan's Answer

"Then don't."

Shen Lian's breath caught.

"You trust me that much?"

Li Xuan's gaze didn't waver.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"I just don't care."

End Scene

The words lingered between them.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Honest.

And for the first time—

Shen Lian didn't try to leave.
