Chapter 141 - Episode 136 - A King's Treasury

The air changed before anyone spoke.

Not the ordinary shift of pressure after a cleared gate. Not the relief of a battlefield ending. This was sharper. System-made. Absolute.

The movement around Aurora slowed and then stopped altogether as the gathered light deepened over the return line. Even the medics paused for one beat. Even the KAMB staff who had already seen reward windows before looked up with the same involuntary tension as everyone else.

Because this was not a normal clear. Because this was a Sovereign Gate. Because whatever came after a king's death was unlikely to be small.

The system descended in full.

  [Reward Distribution Initialized]

 [Sovereign Gate Clear Confirmed]

  [Contribution Assessment Complete]

The first windows struck over Aurora's core one by one, bright enough that even the dawn glare seemed to step back for them.

Lucien's came first.

 [Lucien Ardent

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S

 Rewards:

 * Mana Crystal x 49

 * Elixir of Iron Will × 1

  * Artifact: Crownshard of Ascendant Dominion × 1]

Lucien did not react immediately. He read the artifact name once, then the elixir, then closed the window with the kind of stillness he reserved for things that mattered more than he would ever admit in public. Mira saw that and muttered, "That is such a Lucien reward it's actually offensive."

Kaida's came next.

 [Kaida Myrr

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S

  Rewards:

 * Mana Crystals x 30

 * Elixir of Lucid Mind × 1

 * Artifact: Throneveil Eclipse × 1]

Kaida's eyes narrowed on the window with the exact expression she wore when something was either profoundly useful or personally insulting.

"Which is it," Orion asked quietly.

"Yes," Kaida said.

Seris's followed.

  [Seris Elowen

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S

 Rewards:

 * Mana Crystal x 28

  * Grand Panacea Elixir × 1

  * Artifact: Chalice of Sainted Mercy × 1]

For one second, Seris actually forgot Lucien was bleeding. Only one second. Then she closed the window and immediately resumed being a healer first and everything else second.

Garrick's struck next.

  [Garrick Stonevale

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S

  Rewards:

  * Mana Crystal x 30

  * Elixir of Adamant Flesh × 1

  * Artifact: Pillar of the Last Bastion × 1]

Garrick looked at the artifact name. Then at his already cracked shield. Then back at the system window. Mira looked over. "That is the most Garrick sentence I have ever seen."

He closed it without comment.

Orion's reward appeared.

 [Orion Vale

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S

  Rewards:

 * Mana Crystal x 27

  * Elixir of Far Sight × 1

 * Artifact: Noctis Threadbow Crest × 1]

Orion stared at the artifact line for a second longer than usual. Kaida noticed immediately. "You like it."

"I respect it," Orion said.

"That means yes," Mira replied.

Her own window came next.

 [Mira Solenne

  Reward Distribution Complete

  Contribution Rating: S

  Rewards:

  * Mana Crystal x 26

 * Elixir of Bound Gates × 1

 * Artifact: Sigil of the Sovereign Threshold × 1]

Mira looked delighted in the exhausted, bloodstained way only she could. "Oh, that's gorgeous."

"Naturally," Orion said.

"It understands me."

"That is not comforting."

Then Kairos.

  [Kairos Arvane

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: A

  Rewards:

 * Mana Crystal x 22

 * Elixir of Unbroken Flow × 1

  * Artifact: Crowncurrent Loop × 1

For him, the whole line around Aurora shifted a little more sharply. Because this was his first reward of this kind. His first true top-tier gate reward. And everyone there knew it that the system answered him accordingly.

Kairos stared. Then stared harder. Then looked like he had forgotten what faces were for. Mira saw it first and pointed with immediate approval. "There it is. The expression of someone being promoted by the universe against his will."

Kairos looked at her, still dazed. "I didn't—"

"That's what makes it better."

And then Nox.

The light over his window was not brighter. It only felt that way. As if the system itself had paused before deciding how to name what had happened inside the gate. The reward descended.

  [Nox Caelis

 Reward Distribution Complete

 Contribution Rating: S+

 Rewards:

 * Mana Crystal x 56

  * Elixir of Deferred Death × 1

 * Artifact: Shard of the Unanswered End × 1

No one spoke. Not immediately. Because the names alone were enough to still the perimeter line again. Even Cassian went quiet for one beat too long. Even Cross's expression sharpened a fraction.

And because the people closest to Nox—Lucien, Seris, Kairos, Kaida, Orion, Garrick, Mira—had all seen what he had become inside that gate, the rewards did not feel random. They felt like the system had looked directly at something it did not fully understand and decided to be careful around it.

Nox read the window once. The elixir line stopped him more than the artifact. Lucien noticed that.

"What is it?" Lucien asked quietly.

Nox closed the window. "Nothing good," he said.

Mira, who had recovered first because she was built incorrectly, looked between the reward names and exhaled. "Well. That is the single most ominous thing I have ever heard after a victory."

Cassian stepped closer then, not enough to invade, but enough to see the final system traces still dispersing around the core. "Those are not ordinary S-rank rewards," he said.

Cross did not disagree. "No," Cross said. "They aren't."

Beyond the core, the outside line had gone very still. Strike Team 2 had stopped at the edge of stand-down and was openly watching now. Aurel looked impressed enough to forget exhaustion for one second. Lyra's attention had sharpened into that exact, quiet intensity she got when filing away facts that would matter later. Rurik's gaze settled on Lucien first, then Nox, then the fading window-traces, and stayed there with the unreadable weight of a man recalculating exactly what kind of guild he had joined.

Leander had paused in triage long enough to see Seris's reward and then, despite himself, Nox's. Talia glanced once at him and then back to her work because some things did not need to be commented on in the middle of an emergency perimeter. Cassiel, from his argument with the KAMB supply tech, managed to fall silent only when the artifact names reached the point where even an alchemist had to respect the category of later problem.

The non-awakened staff did not understand every detail. They understood enough. Enough to know this was not normal. Enough to know Aurora's core had come out of the first Sovereign Gate carrying things the system itself had marked as exceptional.

Useful. Necessary. Real. And now, undeniably, terrifying.

Cassian looked over the spread of resolved reward windows and shook his head once. "A king's treasury, apparently."

Mira, still half-held together by spite, pointed at him. "That is exactly the kind of sentence you should not make sound attractive."

"It's not my fault if language likes me better."

"No," Orion said. "It definitely is."

Cross let that pass and turned to Lucien instead. "Your people are dismissed," he said.

Lucien looked at him once. "We were already leaving."

"Good."

Cross's gaze shifted over the core, over the blood, the fractures, the exhaustion, and—just briefly—over Nox again, where the afterimage of the gate still seemed too close to the skin. "Then do it now."

Cassian folded his hands behind his back and looked toward the increasingly nervous KAMB officials gathering farther behind the line. "Before someone with a title and no sense arrives."

Mira groaned. "Why are your warnings always so beautifully timed?"

"Practice."

Aurora began to move after that. Not quickly. Not because they were weak. Because they had finally passed the point where speed was anything but vanity.

Seris finished stabilizing Lucien enough for transport. Garrick reclaimed the broken dignity of his shield by carrying it anyway. Kaida and Orion started mentally sorting which of the rewards required immediate secure handling and which required later study. Mira kept glancing at her own reward line's memory like she wanted to be annoyed and was failing. Kairos still looked quietly stunned in the way people did when they received proof they had crossed into a category they had not yet emotionally updated for.

And Nox—

Nox stayed too still for half a second after everyone else began moving. Lucien saw it and stepped close enough that no one else could plausibly interpret it as anything but practical concern.

"You walking," Lucien asked quietly, "or falling with intent."

That almost got Nox.

"Walking," he said.

Lucien nodded once. "Good."

Then, lower: "You're not carrying that elixir alone."

Nox looked at him. Not because he disagreed. Because the sentence hit too close to too many other things Lucien had been saying lately. He said the first answer that would hold.

"We'll see."

Lucien's mouth shifted at the corner. Not a smile. Not not one. "We will," he said.

Behind them, KAMB was already breaking into the next wave of consequence—reports, security handling, command review, media suppression attempts, government panic shaped into procedure. Ahead of them waited convoy doors, treatment rooms, new team reactions, and the fragile first hours of a guild that had just survived becoming larger than it used to be.

Cross watched Aurora pull away from the perimeter without interference. Let them go home with a king's death still cooling behind their backs. Let the higher-ups choke on the delay.

Cassian, beside him, glanced once at the cleared gate ruin, then at the fading traces of the reward windows still hanging like afterimages in the air. "That one," he said quietly, "will not stay a local story."

Cross did not answer right away. He looked instead toward the departing convoy and the guild structure moving with it—core team, outside teams, medics, support, staff. A complete machine now. Not finished but functioning.

"No," he said at last. "It won't."

And somewhere in the back vehicle, with blood still dried at his collar and the memory of pale fracture-light still too near to his own skin, Nox sat beside Lucien in exhausted silence while the rewards of a dead king settled into the future like promises no one had yet decided how to fear.
