Ethan Grant deduced that if Meredith Rowan was truly a high-ranking member of the group behind the scenes, Uncle Grant would definitely order Yvette Grant to throw a tantrum and force her way in. If he didn't, it meant Meredith Rowan was just an insignificant nobody.
On the surface, Shirley Thorne was making small talk with Meredith Rowan to pass the time. Inwardly, however, she was focusing on the micro-earpiece in her ear, listening intently to Ethan Grant's analysis.
