Chapter 107 - Chapter Fifty-Six – A Future Worth Choosing

For the first time in years, Elena stopped counting days by survival.

There were no battles marking time.

No enemies.

No impossible deadlines hanging over her head.

Just life.

And that was still taking some getting used to.

A month had passed since the synchronization crisis ended.

The city had fully recovered.

People moved through their lives unaware of how close everything had come to changing forever.

Elena preferred it that way.

Heroes were overrated.

Legends were exhausting.

Normal sounded much better.

She stood on the balcony early that morning, coffee warming her hands as she watched the city wake beneath the sunrise.

Golden light spilled across rooftops and streets.

Peaceful.

Quiet.

Alive.

Footsteps approached behind her.

"You've been out here for twenty minutes."

She smiled without turning.

"Good morning to you too."

Alessandro stepped beside her.

"You're thinking."

"That accusation again."

"It's rarely inaccurate."

She took a slow sip from her cup.

"You ever wonder what would've happened if none of this started?"

That made him pause.

"The Crown?"

She nodded.

"The war. The fragments. Everything."

Alessandro looked out toward the skyline.

Silent for several moments.

Then—

"No."

She raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

Certain.

"Because then I wouldn't have met you."

Elena nearly choked on her coffee.

He looked completely serious.

Which somehow made it worse.

"You can't just say things like that casually."

"Why not?"

"Because normal people need preparation."

"I wasn't aware you were normal."

She stared at him.

For three seconds.

Then laughed despite herself.

"That's unfair."

"Accurate."

The morning continued quietly after that.

But something about the conversation lingered.

Not because of what he said.

Because of how naturally he said it.

No hesitation.

No fear.

No walls.

The old Alessandro would've buried those thoughts under ten layers of silence.

Now—

he simply spoke them.

And maybe that was growth too.

Later that afternoon, Adrian burst into the lounge dramatically.

"I have an announcement."

Nobody looked up.

That didn't stop him.

"We should travel."

Elena finally glanced over.

"Travel?"

"Yes."

Alessandro immediately looked suspicious.

"Why."

"Because we've spent years fighting monsters, secret organizations, digital nightmares, and each other."

A pause.

"We deserve a vacation."

Valentina responded instantly.

"Historical data suggests your vacations become disasters."

"That happened twice."

"Five times."

"Details."

Elena leaned back into the sofa.

"Honestly?"

Adrian looked hopeful.

"Yes?"

"A vacation sounds nice."

The room became unexpectedly quiet.

Because that answer wasn't something Elena would've given before.

She noticed Alessandro watching her.

"What?"

"You mean that."

She thought about it.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

She did.

Not because she wanted to run away from the past.

Because she finally felt free enough to look forward.

And that was different.

Very different.

That evening, Elena wandered through the mansion gardens again.

The same gardens where she had once stood carrying the weight of worlds.

Now—

she simply enjoyed the night air.

The roses along the pathways had started blooming.

Small lights illuminated the stone walkways.

Everything felt calm.

Real.

She heard footsteps behind her and smiled before turning.

"You know," she said, "one day you're going to surprise me by not following me everywhere."

Alessandro stopped beside her.

"No."

She laughed softly.

"At least you're honest."

"Always."

The two of them continued walking through the garden.

No destination.

No purpose.

Just together.

Eventually they stopped near the fountain at the center of the courtyard.

Water moved quietly beneath the moonlight.

Elena looked at the reflection dancing across its surface.

"When all of this started," she said softly, "I thought my life was something I had to survive."

Alessandro remained silent.

Listening.

She continued.

"I kept waiting for things to get better."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"And I never realized they already had."

His gaze settled on her.

Steady.

Unwavering.

"Because of you?"

She shook her head.

"Because of us."

Not just him.

Not just her.

All of them.

The people who stayed.

The people who fought.

The people who refused to let each other fall.

The family they built from chaos.

For a while neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

The night itself seemed peaceful enough to fill the silence.

And standing there beneath the stars, Elena finally understood something that had taken her years to learn.

The future wasn't something to fear.

It wasn't a burden to carry.

It wasn't a battle waiting to happen.

The future was simply a choice.

And for the first time in her life—

she was excited to see what came next.
