Chapter 35 - Unnamed

Chapter: 35

(The First Morning in a New City)

A constant drift between sleep and wakefulness reflected on the train's windowpane through the night. Aishi lay with her head on Ayush's shoulder. Outside, the darkness was slowly beginning to fade into a pale blue. The dawn light touched the frame of the train window, like the fresh touch of a new life. The train was slowly pulling into a small station—not familiar, not dear, but from now on, this city would be their home.

Stepping onto the platform, the two held each other's hands tightly. On this first day of a homeless life, their shoulders carried only unfamiliar paths, unknown faces, and a mountain of fear. Sunlight fell upon the gray cement of the platform. Amidst the crowd, the cries of hawkers, and sips of tea, they walked until they found a cheap hotel.

The hotel was small, the room cramped, but it offered the security of at least one night away from the fear of who might be lurking outside the door. Inside, there was a bed, a fan, a mirror, and a faded, hollow clock on the wall. Aishi set her bag aside and sat on the bed. Ayush stood by the window, a light sweat on his neck, his eyes a mixture of fear and consolation.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly.

Aishi pulled the bedsheet over her shoulders and said, "I don't know anyone or anything in this city except you, Ayush. But I know as long as you are here, we will build everything else. I made this decision trusting you."

Ayush remained silent for a moment. Then he came closer and took Aishi's hand. "You know, I'm scared too. But I find courage because you're by my side. Now, we have to start everything from zero."

The morning light gradually spilled through the gaps in the window onto the floor. They sat in silence. Aishi looked at herself in the mirror; she could hardly recognize the person looking back. Her mother used to say this girl would one day be the crown on her head. But today, that girl had run away, shattering her mother's dreams. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she suppressed them.

Leaving the room, they began walking through the city. Everywhere were unfamiliar faces and unknown streets. Shop signs, the hustle and bustle, motorcycle horns—everything was new. But they knew their future lay hidden within this very novelty.

Near an old market, Ayush spotted a clothing store. Inside, a middle-aged man was tidying up fabrics. Ayush gathered his courage and asked, "Uncle, do you need any help? I've worked in a shop before."

The man looked at him for a while, meeting Ayush's eyes. Then he asked, "Can you stay from eight in the morning until eight at night?"

"Yes, Uncle, I can," Ayush replied.

"Then come from tomorrow. The pay isn't much, but I give newcomers a chance."

Aishi was standing a little distance away, listening. Ayush came and gave her the news. Aishi let out a small sigh of relief and said, "Just like that, a job? This is a huge deal, Ayush!"

Nearby, Aishi noticed a tuition board. She mustered the courage to knock on the door. A gentleman opened it and asked, "What do you want?"

Aishi introduced herself and said, "I used to study in college. If I could teach your daughter English and Bengali..."

The gentleman invited her inside. A girl came and stood there, books in hand and curiosity on her face. The gentleman smiled and said, "Come from tomorrow. I believe good people always find a way to prove themselves."

Aishi returned and hugged Ayush. "We can do it, Ayush. We can survive in this city. We will build a new life."

In the evening, they returned to the hotel. A tiny room, but in their eyes, it felt like a fortress. Ayush pulled out two cheap packets from his bag—a packet of biscuits and a bottle of water.

"This is dinner," he said with a smile.

Aishi broke a biscuit and fed him. "There is peace in this dinner. There is love in this dinner."

At night, Ayush stood by the window. Outside, there were headlights on the street, the barking of dogs, and the distant sound of a station—all creating a strange, ethereal atmosphere. Aishi came and rested her head on his shoulder.

"Ayush," she said softly, "do you know how much I love you?"

Ayush replied, "I know. Because you left everything to come with me. This city, this darkness, the uncertainty of the future—you wanted to share it all with me. I am indebted to you."

Aishi looked up at him and said, "It's not a debt, Ayush. You are my only destination. You are my everything."

They stood there in silence. A dark room, the wind at the window, and the beckoning of an unknown future in their hearts. But tonight, they were together. And that was their greatest strength.
