Chapter 9 - The sea of deception: A strategic retreat

As evening fell, they gathered around a crackling bonfire on the beach, grilling fresh seafood while the salty breeze hummed through the palm trees. Julian, playing the role of the patient "big brother," found himself being teased and bossed around the girls. They insisted he play the guitar and sing for them.

Under the brilliant glow of the full moon, which cast a sliver path across the shimmering ocean, Julian began to strum. His voice was deep and soulful, but his eyes hardly ever left Rosalie. Every lyric seemed like a secret message meant only for her.

Eventually, as the other three girls wandered off to dance by the waves, Julian and Rosalie found themselves sitting close together on a driftwood log. The orange glow of the fire danced on their faces.

Julian set the guitar aside and reached her hand, pulling her closer until her head rested on his chest. They sat there in their own private world, whispering sweet nothings and sharing soft laughs-truly a pair of lovebirds lost in the magic of the moonlit night.

The early morning sun began to bleed gold across the horizon, casting long shadows on the quite beach. Rosalie, who had been awake before dawn, walked along the shoreline, her feet sinking into the cool, damp sand.

Julian, spotting her from his porch, followed quietly until he reached her side.

"Did you sleep well, my love? Is your head clear? "

He asked softly, his eyes filled with a protective warmth.

Rosalie stopped and turned to face him, reaching out to grasp both of his hands. She looked up at him with a gaze that was both vulnerable and determined.

"I slept well, Julian. But …. I need to know. Will you really stand by me and follow my lead, no matter what I ask for? "

Julian didn't hesitate. He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs stroking her cheeks with immense tenderness.

"Of course, my little one. Anything you say is a command I will gladly follow. As long as you are happy and safe. I will do whatever it takes. I will listen to you whatever you say. You are my world. "

Slowly, he learned down, his face drawing closer until their lips met in a deep, lingering kiss. As the first rays of morning sunlight hit the ocean, reflecting a brilliant path of light, the two lovers stood locked in and embrace-a breathtaking scene that looked like a masterpiece painted by the morning itself.

In the afternoon, the joyful atmosphere shattered as a luxury car reached straight to them. Out stepped Julian's stepmother, Isabella, and her son, Ethan. Isabella, looking elegant but sharp, walked in with a practiced smile.

"I had some business earlier, but I couldn't miss this opportunity to relax with you all, "

She announced.

"Why don't we stay one more day? My treat. "

Isabella immediately cornered Rosalie, acting overly concerned about her health.

"Rosalie, dear, are you feeling better? You look so pale, "

She said, her eyes scanning Rosalie like a predator. Then, she pulled Ethan forward.

"You know my son, Ethan, right? You met once at your birthday last two days ago. He's actually attending the same university you're heading to. He's a senior there. Ethan, make sure you take good care of Rosalie. If she needs anything, don't hesitate to help. "

Rosalie responded with a clam, stoic grace. She parried every hidden jab in Isabella's conversation with cold politeness, rejecting their "kindness" through subtle wordplay.

Beside them, Julian was a volcano on the verge of erupting. His fists were clenched at his sides, his heart burning with protective rage as he watched Ethan's lingering gaze on Rosalie.

Yet, remembering his promise to her, he remained silent, force to hide their relationship from the people who sought to ruin it. Waves of anxiety crashed against his soul as he watched the web being spun around his beloved.

As Julian led Isabella and Ethan to their quarters, the four girls remained on the beach, the joyful mood completely vanished. Lily bit her lip, her eyes brimming with guilt.

" It's my fault, "

She whispered.

" They must have followed my social media posts. I shouldn't have posted anything. "

Her friends quickly surrounded her, offering comfort and explaining that with Isabella's connections, she would have found them eventually anyway.

Inside the bungalow, as Ethan began unpacking with a smug expression, Isabella called Julian out to the porch. Her voice was sharp and laced with authority.

" Julian, stay away from Rosalie. Don't get too close to her, "

She warned.

" She is meant for Ethan. Only my son is a fit match for her. I've already made arrangements for your education through my connections. "

Julian felt a surge of white-hot-rage, but he remembered Rosalie's plea. He kept his expression unreadable.

" If Rosalie herself accepts it willingly, then so be it, "

He replied shortly, his voice devoid of emotion. Hethen coolly rejected her offer regarding his own studies, stating he had his own plans.

Isabella stared at him, surprised by his sudden defiance. Little did she know, Julian was suppressing a desperate urge to grab Rosalie and run far away to a world where only the two of them existed. He swallowed the bitter heat in his chest, choosing to trust his beloved's plan over his own impulse.

When lunchtime arrived, Isabella took charge with a practiced air of elegance.

" Come along, children! I've arranged everything for us, "

She announced. As everyone began to find their seats, she quickly gestured to her son.

" Ethan, dear, why don't you pull out a chair for Rosalie? Don't make the beautiful lady to await. "

Ethan moved with a smug smile, ready to claim the spot next to her. But Rosalie was one step ahead.

" Oh, I'm so sorry, but that's alright! "

She said with a polite but firm smile.

" I actually have something I need to discuss with Julian. "

Without waiting for a response, she glided over and took the empty seat right next to Julian.

Isabella's smile twitched with annoyance, but she quickly masked it.

" Oh … of course, that's perfectly fine, "

She forced out.

Before Ethan could react, Lily slipped into the chair he had just pulled out.

" Thanks, big brother! You're so sweet, "

She chirped, patting the seat next to her for him to sit down. Ethan was forced to site beside his sister, looking utterly miserable. Across the table, Mia and Elara exchanged hidden thumbs-ups, biting their lips to keep from bursting into laughter at Ethan's sour face.

As the golden evening sun dipped toward the horizon, everyone headed down to the shore. Isabella gave Ethan a sharp look, gesturing for him to follow Rosalie, while she stepped in front of Julian to block his path. Ethan caught up with Rosalie quickly, a confident smirk on his face.

" Rosie, the water looks perfect. Would you like to go on a boat ride with me? "

He asked, attempting to sound charming.

Rosalie paused, offering him a polite but distant smile,

" Oh, Ethan …. Thank you so much for the invitation, "

She began, her voice soft but firm.

" But actually, I'm not feeling very well right now. I think you should go ahead without me. Don't let me spoil the fun for everyone else! I'm really sorry I can't join you all. "

Just then, she spotted Julian approaching from a distance.

" Oh, look! There's Big Brother Julian, "

She added quickly, her eyes twinkling a hidden plan.

" I should ask him to check on me and see if I need some medicine. You guys go on and enjoy the boat ride, okay? "

Before Ethan could protest, the trio of friends-Mia, Lily and Elara-swarmed around him like a whirlwind.

" Oh, Ethan! Are you taking us on a boat? How generous of you! "

Lily cried out, grabbing his arm.

" Come one, everyone! Ethan's treat! Let's go! "

Ther practically dragged a stunned and speechless Ethan away from Rosalie, their cheers drowning out his attempts to speak.
