For several minutes after Rouxi announced that they had rung the dinner bell, nothing happened.
Chenghai kept driving, knowing that nothing was going to happen, but still not understanding what she was actually trying to accomplish.
Was she trying to get them all killed by making them lose control?
But that didn't sound like Rouxi either.
Shaking his head, Chenghai kept his eyes locked on the road ahead. It remained empty, the houses and trees on either side were perfectly mundane, and not a single zombie stumbled out of the ditches. The only sound inside the SUV was the hum of the engine and Lingyun breathing a little too loudly beside Rouxi.
Chenghai should have felt relieved.
Instead, the longer nothing happened, the more certain he became that something was about to go wrong.
It was then that a shape lurched out from between two abandoned cars ahead.
Then another followed it.
A third dragged itself over the cracked pavement with one leg bent at an impossible angle.
