Dymas left the village of River's Rest before the first light of dawn. He had slept only a few hours, enough to let his body recover. The small room above the inn had been quiet, the bed hard but clean. No one had come knocking. No guards. No sect disciples. But he felt the weight of eyes on him even in sleep. Qi Sense had picked up faint signatures moving through the streets at night, scouts, maybe. Or curious villagers who had heard the rumors.
He slipped out the back door while Garrick still snored behind the counter. The stallion waited where he had left it, saddled and rested. Dymas mounted without a word and rode east along the narrow road that skirted the edge of the Forgotten Forest. The cloak stayed pulled tight around his shoulders. The spear rested across the saddle in front of him. The axe hung at his belt. The storage pouch from Harlan Voss now held the remaining two meridian reinforcement pills, a few silver coins, and the manual on meridian cleansing.
The road climbed gently. Hills rolled on either side, dotted with wildflowers and low scrub. The qi here thinned compared to deep forest, but it still flowed steady into his core. The Auto-Cultivation Module never paused. His body felt stronger with every mile. Layer 4 had settled in completely. No aches. No fatigue.
He checked the screen.
Current realm progress: Qi Condensation Layer 4 – 99%
Current points: 39,657
One more solid push and Layer 5 would come. He could feel it waiting, like a door half-open.
The road curved around a rocky ridge. On the far side, the ground dropped into a shallow ravine. A narrow stream ran along the bottom, water clear and fast. Ferns grew thick on the banks. Moss covered the rocks. Qi gathered here, stronger than on the open road. It pooled in the ravine like mist rising from the water.
Dymas slowed the horse. Qi Sense flared. No beasts nearby. No human signatures. Just the natural pulse of the forest.
He dismounted. Led the stallion down the slope. The horse drank from the stream while Dymas walked along the bank. The ravine narrowed ahead. The walls rose steeper, granite veined with quartz that caught the morning light.
A crack in the rock caught his eye. A narrow opening, barely wide enough for a man. Vines hung over it like a curtain. No footprints leading in or out. No scent of smoke or animals.
He pushed the vines aside. Cool air flowed out. The cave mouth widened into a small chamber. The floor sloped gently upward. Sunlight reached only the first few meters. Beyond that, darkness.
Dymas stepped inside. The air smelled of stone and old water. Qi thickened immediately. It pressed against his skin, warm and heavy. The crystals in the walls glowed faint blue, pulsing slow.
He lit no torch. Qi Sense showed the chamber clear. No traps. No hidden signatures.
At the back wall, a small alcove. A stone shelf carved into the rock. On it sat a dusty wooden box, lid cracked open. Beside it, a rolled scroll tied with faded red cord. A single spirit herb lay next to them—dried, but still radiating qi.
Dymas approached slow. He opened the box first.
Inside: three low-grade qi stones, dull green. A small vial of dark liquid labeled "Meridian Wash Elixir." And a thin booklet bound in worn leather. Title in faded ink: Advanced Qi Circulation for Foundation Building.
He set the box down carefully. Unrolled the scroll next.
It was a map. Rough lines drawn in black ink. The Forgotten Forest marked in detail. A red circle around this ravine. An arrow pointing deeper east, toward what looked like a ruined sect outpost. Notes in the margin: "Safe haven. Hidden array. Beware shadow beasts."
Dymas folded the scroll and tucked it into his tunic with the other manual.
He picked up the herb. Crushed it between his fingers. Pressed the paste to his wrists and throat.
Qi gained: +800
Realm progress: Qi Condensation Layer 4 – 100%
Breakthrough imminent.
He sat on the stone floor. Cross-legged. Spear across his knees. Axe beside him. He swallowed one of the meridian reinforcement pills from Harlan's pouch.
The pill melted on his tongue. Warmth spread through his meridians. They loosened, ready.
He closed his eyes.
The qi from the cave rushed in. The crystals in the walls brightened. Currents swirled around him. He pulled it all toward his core.
Pressure built fast. His dantian swelled. Pain lanced through his channels. He gritted his teeth. Kept drawing.
The core reached its limit. It trembled. Then cracked open.
Energy exploded outward. Meridians stretched. Veins burned. His body shook. Sweat poured down his face. Black hair plastered to his neck. The silver scar on his cheek throbbed.
He pushed harder. Refused to stop.
A second crack. The core reformed. Larger. Brighter. Qi surged clean and powerful.
Breakthrough complete: Qi Condensation Layer 5
All stats +2
New passive unlocked: Qi Overflow – Excess qi can be stored externally for short bursts (up to 30 seconds).
Cursed Burst upgraded again: Cooldown reduced to 3 minutes.
Dymas exhaled. The pain faded into a deep, satisfying warmth. His body felt renewed. Taller. Stronger. The muscles under his pale skin stood out more clearly. His breathing came deeper, steadier.
He opened his eyes.
The cave glowed brighter. The crystals pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat. Qi Sense showed the forest outside in sharp detail: small beasts moving, birds in the branches, distant human signatures—too far to worry about yet.
He stood. Tested his balance. A quick Wind Glide step carried him across the chamber in a blur. No cooldown lag. He swung the spear. The qi-infused blade cut the air with a low hum.
Better.
He picked up the Advanced Qi Circulation booklet. Flipped through. Diagrams of hand seals. Breathing patterns for faster qi flow. Good for future breakthroughs.
He tucked it away.
The vial of Meridian Wash Elixir went into the pouch. Saved for later.
He stepped out of the cave. The stallion waited, ears pricked.
Dymas mounted. Rode back up the slope.
The ravine fell behind. The road stretched east again.
