"Father, name it," Calca said, her voice dropping into a sweet, dutiful tone.
Caspond II recognized that particular lilt—the sound of his daughter wanting a favor—and smiled as he laid out his conditions. "First, while you may teach the technique to others, you must obtain my explicit consent for each individual. Second, you are to report your progress to me at regular intervals, including your expenditure of funds. No hiding anything."
Calca agreed without a moment's hesitation. "No problem, Father."
Seeing how cooperative his daughter was being, Caspond II let out a sigh, his voice becoming earnest and grave. "Child, having great talent is important, but becoming obsessed with it is not always a blessing. When Grandpa Rosta advised you before, it was for this very reason."
He gently lifted the flying necklace hanging from Calca's neck, his gaze turning deep and distant. "You likely saw it in the text—the First Holy King wanted to learn the [Fly] spell because he lost to Fluder. But he later became so obsessed with Mana Auras and that 'Mana Membrane' that he failed to truly master [Fly] even by the time he was in his forties."
Caspond II patted his daughter's head, his tone becoming exceptionally solemn. "Calca, we are the Royal Family, the leaders of this nation. We cannot afford to be sacrificed easily. If we fall, the Holy Kingdom falls into chaos. Do you know why the Royal Capital was built at the far western edge, so distant from the Great Wall in the east? It was to buy us a buffer of time should the wall ever be breached."
"The Royal Family requires successive kings to possess high-tier magical talent because spells like [Fly], [Dimensional Move], and [Teleportation] allow a leader to evacuate a battlefield rapidly. A warrior may be strong, but they possess nothing in the way of survival and extraction. If our ancestor had focused his energy on raising his magical Tier, perhaps he would have reached the Sixth Tier, and then, perhaps..."
Caspond II trailed off, offering a forced smile to mask his thoughts. "Your talent is an exception, and I agree to let you study these things, but you must constantly communicate your progress with me."
Calca nodded thoughtfully. She realized that the First Holy King's biography likely contained some tragic lesson that made his descendants so wary of the "Magic Warrior" path. Since she had already secured the right to "popularize auras" for free, she didn't need to waste the massive credit she'd earned from discovering the runes on this request.
With a sudden spark of inspiration, Calca smiled and pivoted the conversation. "By the way, Father, did you come here because of the magic runes? Can I trade that discovery for a different reward instead?"
She decided to use this "achievement" for something much more urgent.
