"Matthew has never liked me," Jayden said with a cynical chuckle, leaning back in his chair as he fixed Bob with a skeptical stare. "But killing me? Come on. Do you really think he'd have the nerve to do something like that?"
Bob had already settled back into his seat across the conference table, his weathered face remaining solemn despite Jayden's dismissive attitude. He didn't smile. He didn't laugh. Instead, he regarded Jayden with the steady expression of someone who wished the other man would stop underestimating the danger.
Jayden, however, found the entire idea difficult to accept.
His mind instinctively searched for a logical connection that wasn't there.
Matthew was no longer Veronica's husband. Veronica—Jayden's late wife—had been gone for years. Whatever complicated history existed between them should have ended with the divorce and her death. Why would Matthew suddenly decide to eliminate him now?
What possible benefit could Matthew gain from having him killed?
