Chapter 26 - Chapter 2 — Fallen Signs

Rain continued to fall as the Impala cut through the empty highway.

The windshield wipers moved in their steady rhythm, the only sound breaking the silence inside the car.

Dean kept one hand on the wheel.

The other rested on Sam's letter.

He had already read it six times.

It still made no sense.

Ben finally spoke.

"You're overthinking it."

Dean glanced at him.

"Probably."

Ben shrugged.

"Sam wasn't exactly known for writing simple notes."

A faint smile crossed Dean's face.

"Guess I got that from him."

Ben chuckled.

"Yeah... except he usually left more than one sentence."

Dean carefully folded the letter and slipped it back into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Outside, the rain suddenly stopped.

Almost instantly.

Dean noticed.

So did Ben.

"That's... weird."

The sky ahead had become perfectly clear.

Yet behind them, the storm still raged.

It was as if they had crossed an invisible line.

Dean slowed the Impala.

"I've seen this before."

Ben looked around.

"Where?"

Dean frowned.

"Dad used to tell me stories about places where reality felt..."

He searched for the right word.

"...thin."

The road curved sharply.

Just beyond the bend stood an old stone church.

Unlike the burned church they had visited months before, this one was intact.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

But something felt terribly wrong.

Dean parked the Impala across the street.

Neither of them got out immediately.

Ben stared at the church.

"Do you feel that?"

Dean nodded.

"Yeah."

Silence.

No birds.

No wind.

Nothing.

The entire area felt...

Empty.

They crossed the street cautiously.

The church doors stood wide open.

Inside, dozens of candles burned quietly.

Yet there wasn't a single person.

Ben whispered.

"Hello?"

No answer.

Dean stepped farther inside.

His boots echoed across the stone floor.

Then—

He stopped.

At the altar.

Something white lay on the ground.

Ben walked beside him.

His eyes widened.

"Is that...?"

Dean knelt.

It was a feather.

Nearly two feet long.

Pure white.

But its tip had turned black, as if it had been burned.

Dean picked it up carefully.

The moment his fingers touched it—

A blinding flash exploded in his mind.

Darkness.

Screams.

Hundreds of voices crying out at once.

Wings.

Thousands of wings.

Then—

One enormous pair of white wings shattered into ash.

A familiar voice echoed through the vision.

"The gates cannot remain closed forever..."

Another voice answered.

Deep.

Ancient.

Cold.

"Then let Heaven fall."

Dean gasped.

The vision ended.

He stumbled backward.

Ben caught him before he hit the floor.

"Dean!"

Dean breathed heavily.

His heart pounded.

Ben held his shoulders.

"What happened?"

Dean stared at the feather still lying in his hand.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"...That wasn't a vision."

Ben frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Dean slowly looked toward the altar.

"It was a memory."

Before Ben could answer—

The church bell rang.

Once.

A deep, haunting sound echoed through the empty building.

Then again.

Twice.

Dean looked toward the bell tower.

"Nobody's up there."

The third bell never rang.

Instead—

Every candle inside the church went out simultaneously.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A calm voice echoed from somewhere behind them.

"You shouldn't have touched that feather."

Dean and Ben spun around.

Standing near the entrance was a man dressed in a long black coat.

His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of an old hat.

Only his eyes were visible.

Silver.

Glowing softly in the darkness.

Dean instinctively reached for the Colt.

The stranger didn't move.

Instead, he smiled.

Not cruelly.

Sadly.

"Relax, Winchester."

He looked directly at Dean.

"If I wanted you dead..."

He glanced at the Colt resting in Dean's hand.

"...you would never have heard me speak."

Silence filled the church.

Then the stranger removed his hat.

His face looked human.

But there was something timeless in his expression.

Something impossibly old.

He took one slow step forward.

"My name is Malach."

He paused.

His silver eyes locked onto Dean's.

"And Heaven has been looking for you."
