Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Man in the reflection

The hallway still smelled like antiseptic and fear.

It clung to the walls, to the floor, to the people who walked through it like ghosts pretending to be alive.

He stood alone at the end of it.

Still.

Watching.

The nurses hadn't returned.

Not after what happened in the room.

Not after the monitors screamed and then… stopped.

He looked down at his hands again.

Steady.

Too steady.

That feeling returned.

That same quiet ripple.

That same… echo.

But now it was clearer.

Not just inside him.

Around him.

The lights above flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

they all went out.

Darkness swallowed the hallway.

Silence.

Then a sound.

Not footsteps.

Not movement.

Breathing.

Behind him.

He didn't turn.

"…you're not supposed to be awake."

The voice was low.

Calm.

Too calm.

He slowly tilted his head.

Not fully looking.

Just enough.

A man stood at the far end of the corridor.

Black coat.

No badge.

No reflection in the glass beside him.

That was wrong.

"You died," the man said.

A pause.

"So why are you still here?"

The main character finally turned.

Fully now.

Eyes locking.

"I was going to ask the same thing."

The man smiled.

Not friendly.

Not hostile.

Interested.

"…good," he said.

"Then you're already thinking."

The air shifted.

Subtle.

But real.

That ripple again.

Stronger this time.

The man stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Each step felt…

heavy.

Like the world noticed him moving.

"You felt it, didn't you?" the man said.

"That moment."

The main character didn't answer.

The man continued anyway.

"When everything stopped."

"Not your heart."

"Not your body."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Something else."

Silence.

Then—

finally—

the main character spoke.

"…the echo."

The word slipped out before he could stop it.

The man's smile widened.

"There it is."

Another step closer.

"You shouldn't know that word."

The lights flickered again—

but this time, they didn't come back.

Darkness pressed in.

The man stopped just a few feet away.

Close enough now.

Too close.

"You came back wrong."

A beat.

"Do you know what that makes you?"

The main character didn't move.

Didn't blink.

"…alive."

The man chuckled.

Soft.

"No."

A pause.

"Alive is what you were."

The air tightened.

"Now?"

The man leaned in slightly.

"You're something that shouldn't exist."

The echo surged.

Violent this time.

The main character staggered—

just slightly—

but enough.

The man noticed.

"Ah," he whispered.

"Still unstable."

His hand lifted.

Slow.

Not threatening.

Not yet.

"But that's fine."

Another step.

Now face to face.

"We have time."

A long silence stretched between them.

Then—

the man spoke again.

"…do you want to know why you came back?"

No hesitation this time.

"Yes."

The answer came instantly.

The man studied him.

Then smiled.

"Good."

He straightened.

Turned slightly.

"Then don't die again."

And just like that—

he was gone.

No footsteps.

No sound.

No trace.

The lights came back.

The hallway returned.

Empty.

Like nothing had happened.

But the echo remained.

Louder now.

He stood there.

Breathing.

Thinking.

One question looping in his mind.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Something else.

If I wasn't supposed to come back…

His fingers curled slightly.

…then what brought me back?

The echo answered.

Not in words.

But in presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Awake.
