In the center of the long mahogany table lay neither financial files nor lithography plans. There was only one object.
A computer tower.
But it bore no resemblance to anything the computer industry of the 1990s had been churning out. The drab, angular, noisy beige cases that cluttered the offices of IBM, Apple, or Hewlett-Packard were suddenly a thing of the past.
The object that sat on the table was a monolith of matte black polycarbonate, with smooth, streamlined edges, split by aggressively elegant, asymmetrical ventilation grilles.
It was the Compaq AXIOM. The fruit of the pact sealed with the Texas giant, imbued with the soul, intelligence, and silicon of France. The world's first personal computer with a 100% majestic architecture, powered by the Volta X operating system.
Around the table, Volta SA's inner circle observed the machine with almost religious fascination.
Nadia Chérif, the communications director, broke the silence. Her severe suit contrasted sharply with the feverish intensity in her eyes. The monumental task of selling this machine to the world fell to her.
« The specialized press and the financial markets are expecting just a simple processor launch, » Nadia began, nervously typing away in her notebook. « Intel has just launched a major advertising campaign on American television for its upcoming Pentium.
They're selling megahertz. If we want to crush them, we have to change the rules of the game. We have to communicate the imminence of a complete revolution.
The Compaq AXIOM mustn't be seen as just a faster PC. It has to make the very concept of an 'IBM-compatible PC' seem outdated, obsolete, stillborn. »
Lazare Bonaparte, seated at the end of the table, his hands clasped in front of his face, never took his eyes off the black monolith. The twenty-seven-year-old engineer, whose reconstructed clavicle caused intermittent pain, radiated an arctic certainty.

The young CEO turned to Karim Belkacem. The technical director, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his eyes ringed with dark circles from nights of supervision between the Huabei chains in China and the brand new Alsatian MegaFab, approached the whiteboard.
« Initial production volumes are secured, » Karim announced. « Assembly plants in China are running at full capacity, and silicon wafers are coming off our foundries with yields improving daily.
We have enough to flood the market from day one. But to stifle Intel and AMD across all levels of the economy, from the Pentagon to the student's bedroom, the AXIOM lineup will be artificially split into five distinct versions. »
Karim drew five lines on the board.
« At the top of the pyramid, the AXIOM 2190. It features our perfect processor, the VESLA 2190 at 66 MHz, with its full 256 KB L2 cache and simultaneous multithreading enabled. It's the workstation for traders, researchers, military personnel, and 3D designers. »
He lowered his position one notch.
« Below that, the AXIOM 2180 and AXIOM 2170, with their frequency limited to 50 MHz or with part of their cache memory removed, are intended for corporate executives and advanced office applications. Then there's the AXIOM 2160 at 33 MHz for SMEs. »
Karim paused, putting down his pen, his expression suddenly serious. He reached the last line, the one that would revolutionize global digital demographics.

A smile devoid of any human warmth, of radical industrial cynicism, stretched across the pale lips of Lazare Bonaparte. »Then we will cut off the healthy flesh,« decreed the young billionaire.
The meeting room fell into a stunned silence. Karim Belkacem paled, the engineer's mind colliding head-on with the irrationality of the order. »You... you want to deliberately mutilate perfect processors?« Karim stammered, incredulous. »Lazare, these 2190 chips cost us a fortune in research and lithography!
The SMT works, the cache is flawless! You want us to use a laser to intentionally destroy millions of perfectly functioning transistors, just to cripple them and turn them into low-end 2150 SXs? That's... that's technological blasphemy!« « It's trench warfare, »
Lazare corrected him ruthlessly. « If we leave even the smallest patch of market empty, the floodgates will open. Intel survives by selling massive volumes of entry-level products to finance its R&D.
I want to cut off their lifeline. If it means destroying the equivalent of millions of francs worth of perfect silicon to maintain our monopoly on students' and schools' desks, we will do it. No customer, regardless of their budget, should have any choice but to buy a machine powered by Volta X. »
Édouard Renault-Tessier opened his financial ledger, his throat tight.
« Lazare, if we modify very high-quality chips to sell them as low-end products, we'll sell them at a loss. The production cost of the cut-down 2190 will never be recouped by the selling price of a 2150SX.

« Seven hundred and sixty-two euros for our most powerful workstation?! Lazare, a run-of-the-mill high-end Intel 486 sold by Compaq last year, cost twice as much! At that price, we're crushing the market, but we're sacrificing outrageous gross margins! »The goal isn't to make a quick buck, Édouard.

Three hundred and eighty-one euros for a complete computer, equipped with a RISC processor, a smooth graphics operating system, and a 3D coprocessor. It was an act of pure and simple commercial terrorism.
At that price, the profit margins of Intel and Microsoft, who sold their chips and licenses at exorbitant prices to system assemblers, were going to evaporate. The Wintel alliance could never compete without going bankrupt.
Volta had just invented the democratization of computing through brute force.

Karim Belkacem, who had himself coded the protocols of this integrated network port, sketched a smile heavy with state secrets.
« The current computing world runs on floppy disks, » Lazare explained to the communications director. « If Microsoft wants to update its system, if a security vulnerability is discovered, they have to press millions of pieces of plastic and send them by mail.
It's cumbersome, it's slow, it's archaic. The VESLA-III processor is the very first in the world to integrate an Ethernet controller directly into its architecture. This network port isn't meant to connect three computers in a dusty office.
It's meant to connect the machine to Ivry-sur-Seine. »
Nadia frowned, fascinated but perplexed.
« A remote update? But current telephone modems are capped at 28.8 or 56 kilobits per second, Lazarus! They block the voice line and would take days to download patches for an operating system the size of Volta X!
The general public will refuse to monopolize their telephone for that. »Exactly,« agreed Lazarus, his dark eyes blazing with a Machiavellian gleam. »That's why we won't be using 1994 modems.« He turned to Karim, leaving him to play the final card of their hegemony. »

The revelation hit Nadia and Edward like a ton of bricks. The scale of the Builder's plan defied human comprehension. The computer was merely a terminal; the real weapon was the network itself.
« Every night, while the user sleeps, » Lazarus continued in a low, almost ghostly voice, « the computer will silently communicate with our servers. Volta X will update itself.
Vulnerabilities will be patched, new features will appear in the early morning, without any human intervention. The machine will be alive. And if the CIA, or any foreign agency, tries to compromise one of our machines… I can destroy it remotely, in a millisecond. »
« The umbilical cord… » Édouard Renault-Tessier gasped, horrified by the sheer level of control this implied. « But Lazare, this ADSL infrastructure, these boxes… they don't exist in the United States or Japan.
Niel's network is strictly limited to French territory for the time being! The unbundling work has only just begun. »
« Precisely, » declared the young silicon mogul. « France will be our open-air laboratory. The only country in the world where the personal computer will unleash its full symbiotic power.
The Americans will have the AXIOM's chassis, but the French will possess its central nervous system. Xavier Niel will flood the country with his black boxes, and we will provide him with the perfect computer to connect to them. »
Lazare straightened up, readjusting the tail of his jacket over his injured shoulder. The meeting was drawing to a close. The battle plan was set in stone at Ivry. »Prepare the launch campaigns, Nadia.
Flood the television screens, the bus shelters, and the press. The currency will be the Euro, the price will be the execution of the competition, and the machine will be the Axiom. America ruled the isolated machines.
