Chapter 197 - Hidden Power Fire!

Inside the room.

After Mr. Lee departed, Owen looked at Eevee, who was still sprawled out on the pillow, deep in thought. He called out to it.

"Vee..." Eevee walked over with a face full of conflict.

"What's wrong?" Seeing its troubled expression, Owen asked instinctively.

Eevee closed its eyes and focused on its body. Earlier, it had asked Owen if it could still evolve back into that form; now, Eevee was certain it could.

It felt the Berserk Gene waking up in its mind, forming a close connection with its consciousness. Eevee could clearly perceive a mysterious energy contained within this gene—one of the powers that had triggered the evolution during the day: Solar Energy.

As long as it used the Return move to channel its emotional energy and wake the gene, it could, barring any accidents, transform back into the Sun Pokémon.

However, during the attempt, the moment Eevee's emotional energy touched the Berserk Gene, it felt its entire body flush with heat... a sensation like being scorched under a relentless desert sun. If it had to describe its greatest desire at that moment... it would be a powerful air conditioner and a cold glass of cola.

"Heat?" Owen said, surprised.

Espeon was a Psychic-type. According to lore, it possessed precognitive abilities, using its fine, short fur to predict weather and an opponent's movements from shifts in the air.

Furthermore, it could fire psychic power from the gem on its forehead. The gem would glow when using power and fade when exhausted.

By bathing in sunlight, the gem could convert solar energy into psychic power for recovery. One could say the reason it could master such powers and be called the "Sun Pokémon" was entirely due to that red gemstone.

Based on Eevee's description, it seemed the Berserk Gene had become a storage vessel for solar energy.

"Vee-vee!!" Eevee suddenly remembered something else and told Owen.

After the evolution, the Berserk Gene had physically migrated from its brain to the position of the red gem on its forehead. While that made sense, what really annoyed Eevee was the catastrophic energy consumption during battle.

Just two Psychic attacks had completely drained the mental energy stored in the gem. Beyond that, its physical stamina had plummeted.

If it hadn't been able to "de-evolve" back into Eevee, it likely would have blacked out from sheer exhaustion on the spot.

"That's understandable... you've only been training for a year. No matter how strong your mental energy is, it's not enough to easily suppress a Professional Trainer's ace. High consumption is inevitable," Owen began to piece it together.

The incredible strength Eevee displayed upon evolving was likely tied directly to the Berserk Gene—trading massive energy consumption for a short-term burst of overwhelming power. To Owen, this was a classic high-risk, high-reward scenario.

"If you can learn to control the Berserk Gene, you might be able to reduce the drain and maintain the Espeon form for longer—though your peak power might not be as explosive as it was today," Owen noted.

Currently, Eevee's state was remarkably similar to Mega Evolution: using an external force to gain massive power for a short time, but struggling to sustain it. The difference was that, theoretically, Eevee could stay as an Espeon permanently if it mastered the emotional control of that gene.

"Vee..." Eevee gave a shrug of indifference. It actually preferred its original form. The sheer power of the Espeon state felt alien and frightening... it was terrified that if it didn't control its strength, it might accidentally crush its phone. That would be the true tragedy.

Owen watched Eevee roll back onto the bed, his expression complex. He suddenly thought of Dr. Chen, the man who had researched the R-drug. Was this your ultimate goal?

No... Chen likely never expected his experimental results to turn out like this. To an outsider, the ability to evolve and then revert back would seem useless—it offered no permanent tactical advantage.

But the underlying significance was immeasurable. Owen realized—perhaps he was the only person on Earth who could realize—just how revolutionary Eevee's change was.

In the lore of The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie, Xerneas, the Life Pokémon, hinted that Life Energy is the key to Mega Evolution.

In the story, Diancie achieved autonomous Mega Evolution by understanding the application of life energy and the true meaning of life.

In the games, Professor Sycamore of the Kalos region pointed out that Mega Stones were actually stones influenced by the radiation of Xerneas and Yveltal's battle, infused with massive amounts of life energy.

A trainer needs two things for Mega Evolution: Life Energy and a Bond. The Mega Stone provides the life energy, while the Key Stone acts as the bridge for emotional energy. That is how the transformation is completed.

Evolution is the elevation of a Pokémon's life stage. If Eevee can freely evolve and de-evolve, what does that mean? Owen knew exactly what it meant!

It meant that in this repeated process, Eevee could constantly perceive and feel the fluctuations of life energy as its life stage shifted!

In one year... five years... ten years... as Eevee's understanding of life energy grew clearer, it might eventually be able to control that energy to strengthen itself! Life energy was a higher-order power than emotional, mental, or ghost energy.

While some Ghost-types could drain it from others, they had no clue how to control their own.

Legendary Pokémon can Mega Evolve without stones because they can autonomously control their own life energy to temporarily elevate their life stage.

Eevee, already capable of controlling emotional energy, now had the perfect conditions to perceive life energy.

"Goddess Eevee..." Owen rubbed his temples. He used to say it as a joke, but thanks to the Berserk Gene, Eevee truly had the potential to live up to the name.

Even if its raw power didn't reach Legendary heights, its ceiling would be no lower than any Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution.

Owen didn't ask Eevee to try evolving again, as there were too many unknowns. But Eevee, being Eevee, couldn't suppress its curiosity.

That night, while Owen wasn't looking, Eevee accidentally triggered the gene again.

Wrapped in white light, the elegant, pale-purple Espeon appeared before Owen's eyes once more.

Owen looked at the moonlight outside the window and noticed something: it was still an Espeon, not an Umbreon. It seemed the Berserk Gene had fused permanently with Solar Energy.

At that moment, Eevee finally let out a sigh of relief as it figured out what that "scorching" feeling was. Red flames began to flicker and manifest around Espeon's body.

Owen's jaw dropped. "Wait, is that...?"

"Hidden Power Fire???"

Espeon... with Hidden Power Fire... actually, that made a terrifying amount of sense.
