Chapter 122 - Success?

Magnemite is an Electric and Steel-type Pokémon, a Magnet species. Consequently, its moves are largely limited to those two types.

Owen's Magnemite was currently no different from any other rookie's starter. Tackle, Thundershock, Thunder Wave, and Hidden Power—that was the extent of its arsenal.

It had its basic Electric offense, but it had yet to grasp any formal Steel-type moves. Owen wasn't in a rush, though; the little guy had only just learned to fly.

What was the most urgent priority? Naturally, making it fly faster and more flexibly.

This wasn't just about practicing Hidden Power anymore; it required mastering Thunder Wave as well.

After all, Magnemite stays airborne primarily by emitting electromagnetic waves from its side units to nullify gravity.

Its mastery over these waves directly correlates to its flight speed and maneuverability.

"Practice Thunder Wave and Hidden Power together. Once you can use them instinctively, you should be able to control your ability to disrupt electronics," Owen told Magnemite.

In the Pokémon Generations series, a Magnemite once demonstrated the specialized ability to bypass electronic locks. Owen didn't just want his Magnemite to develop in that direction; he wanted it to be even stronger—maximizing its inherent advantages to easily dismantle or hack various electronic devices.

And all of that relied on the precise manipulation of electromagnetism.

Aside from combat training, Owen finally brought back the "Great Project" he had been shelving for a long time. Now that Magnemite's mastery of Hidden Power had seen a breakthrough, the production of Pokéblocks could finally resume.

Striking while the iron was hot, Owen commanded Magnemite to try again that very night. Eevee had planned to retreat to her room for some solo screen time, but with Owen there, she didn't get her wish.

"What we're about to make is an incredibly delicious food. If you don't help, there won't be any for you later..."

Owen offered another empty promise, and Eevee sat on the floor, puffing out her cheeks in annoyance. The problem was, she knew Owen's capabilities; she was genuinely worried that he and Magnemite might actually cook up something gourmet and leave her out.

After a quick mental analysis, Eevee sighed. Am I destined to be a 'Tool-vee' forever?

Eevee stood on the table, responsible for hitting the blender's power switch. Magnemite handled the middle stages, and Owen acted as the director, controlling the timing. The three of them had a clear division of labor as they attempted to craft Pokéblocks once more.

Owen recalled the necessary steps. To make a Pokéblock, one must:

Slice the Berries into manageable chunks and put them in the blender. Blend at high speeds without adding water. During rotation, the centrifugal force concentrates the nutrients in the center.

The Extraction: This was the hard part. At the precise moment, one must use psychic power to perfectly separate the core nutrients from the fruit pulp.

The Compression: Immediately after separation, the nutrients must be compressed. If the separation is too slow, nutrients leak. If the compression isn't timely, the quality and appearance suffer.

Through his experiments, Owen found that there was a reason they were called Poké-blocks. Only a standard cube shape could effectively lock in the energy. Circles, triangles—none of them worked.

Previously, they had been stuck on step two. Magnemite's psychic power couldn't extract and compress the nutrients fast enough. How did the Berry Blenders in the games do it? Was it more Pokémon-world 'black technology'?

"Now!!"

The moment Owen issued the command, Eevee and Magnemite moved in unison. Eevee flipped the lid, and Magnemite used its power to pull a mass of pulp out and compress it. The process took about half the time of their previous attempt. This time, the block Magnemite produced actually looked like something—though it still contained impurities and refused to solidify. This was the third hurdle they hadn't cleared yet.

"Next... we heat it!"

Since cooling to solidify had failed last time, Owen decided to try heat. Magnemite used its psychic power to place the pulp cube into the oven.

The oven sizzled. As time passed, the pulp actually began to solidify! However, the impurities didn't decrease; in fact, they seemed to multiply.

"Holy crap," Owen muttered. It actually solidified?

This certainly wasn't a simple physical change; it might not even be a standard chemical one. There was a subject in university called Pokémon Energetics—perhaps this fell under that domain.

"Wait... Magnemite... your mental power..." Owen blinked. As Magnemite used its psychic power to hold the block during heating, its control became wobbly. Clearly, the layer of mental energy surrounding the block was changing as the temperature rose.

Sizzle...

Suddenly, Magnemite lost its grip. The Pokéblock dropped onto a plate with a distinct clack. The sound proved it had completely solidified. But looking at the blackened, charred-looking block, Owen doubted if it was even edible.

It seemed they had failed again.

"In the games, there are Black Pokéblocks... the lowest quality ones. The taste is a mess, the flavors haven't blended, and there's almost no nutrition. Is it because they were burnt?" Owen's eyelid twitched as he looked at the black cube. He picked it up, gave it a lick, and then shook his head.

It tasted like charcoal. Even the fruity flavor was buried. Logically, at this temperature, it shouldn't have charred so quickly.

"We're halfway there."

Heating was the right track—at least more reliable than cooling—because the block had solidified naturally. But it was still different from what Owen had imagined.

He racked his brain for everything he had ever learned, eventually circling back to electricity. He looked at Magnemite with a gaze that made the little guy feel a bit nervous. Eevee, seeing this, gave a sly grin, knowing Magnemite was about to work overtime.

Thirty minutes later, Owen, Magnemite, and Eevee stared at a brand-new black Pokéblock on the table with solemn expressions.

Did they succeed?

After wasting an untold amount of Berries, they finally had something that looked legitimate. This Pokéblock's appearance was much better; the color was transparent and deep, it wasn't charred, and the shape was natural.

The heat generated by passing a current through the pulp had stimulated the solidification. Furthermore, the electricity had "tempered" the block, purging the final impurities and significantly raising its visual quality.

It turned out that a key step in the Berry Blender involved electricity for purification and solidification. Owen held the black Pokéblock high, as if he had found a rare treasure, his excitement overflowing.

"This time for sure... Great job, Magnemite! Eevee, you worked hard too. Come and have a taste."

"Vee!" Eevee nodded expectantly. She took the Pokéblock from Owen's palm and chewed.

Eevee: (~ ̄▽ ̄)~

One second later...

Eevee: ╰(〒皿〒)╯ Mental Breakdown

She had never eaten anything so disgusting in her life.
