The interior of the reactor tower felt like the inside of a dead giant.
The air was thick with the smell of rust, burned metal, and something older—something chemical that had soaked into the concrete walls for decades. Dust floated slowly in the faint beam of Mara's rifle light, turning the darkness into a silent storm of grey particles.
The enormous chamber stretched upward hundreds of meters, disappearing into a circular opening far above where broken concrete allowed weak daylight to filter in. What little light entered the tower only made the darkness deeper.
Kael stood frozen, his spear gripped tightly in both hands.
The scraping sound came again.
Metal dragging against metal.
Slow.
Heavy.
Alive.
Mara's rifle light moved carefully across the ruins of the reactor machinery. Twisted pipes and shattered control consoles were scattered everywhere like the remains of a fallen civilization.
Then the beam stopped.
Something moved.
A massive shape shifted behind a collapsed turbine housing.
Arin's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Don't move."
Kael barely breathed.
The shape slowly unfolded itself from the wreckage.
First came a long mechanical arm, its joints grinding loudly as it extended outward. Rusty armor plates scraped against each other as the machine lifted itself from the floor.
Dust cascaded down from its frame as if the creature had been buried for years.
Then the head rose.
A single circular eye ignited in the darkness.
Orange light.
The same cold mechanical glow that every ORION machine carried.
The Guardian had awakened.
Kael's throat tightened.
The machine was enormous.
Even crouched, it was taller than two men standing on each other's shoulders. Its body was built from thick overlapping armor plates designed to withstand artillery fire. Four heavy limbs supported its body like a mechanical beast rather than a humanoid soldier.
It was not meant for war across battlefields.
It was built to defend something.
Mara slowly raised her rifle.
Arin grabbed the barrel gently and pushed it down.
"Wait."
The Guardian's eye rotated slowly as if scanning the chamber.
The beam of Mara's rifle light reflected across its cracked armor.
For a moment the machine remained still.
Then its eye locked directly onto them.
The reactor chamber exploded with sound.
A deep mechanical roar erupted from the Guardian as its internal engines ignited after decades of silence. Sparks burst from its joints as ancient power systems struggled to restart.
Kael stepped back instinctively.
"Okay… now we move!"
The Guardian lunged forward.
Its massive front limb slammed into the concrete floor with enough force to shake the entire reactor tower. Broken metal scattered everywhere as the machine surged toward them.
Mara fired first.
Her rifle cracked sharply in the enclosed chamber.
Three rounds struck the Guardian's head.
The bullets sparked harmlessly against the thick armor.
"Armor is too thick!" she shouted.
Arin grabbed Kael's shoulder.
"Split up!"
The three of them scattered in different directions just as the Guardian smashed through the spot where they had been standing.
The floor shattered beneath its weight.
Chunks of concrete and metal exploded across the chamber.
Kael sprinted behind a collapsed turbine, sliding across the dusty floor as the Guardian turned toward him.
The glowing eye burned brighter.
Its targeting systems had locked onto the closest target.
"Why me?" Kael shouted.
The machine charged.
Kael ran.
Its footsteps thundered behind him like an approaching earthquake. Every time one of its metal limbs struck the ground, the entire reactor tower trembled.
Kael darted between rusted pipes and broken reactor panels, desperately trying to stay ahead.
Behind him, the Guardian smashed through everything in its path.
Metal screamed.
Concrete shattered.
The ancient reactor chamber that had stood silent for decades was suddenly alive with destruction.
Across the room, Arin watched the machine's movement carefully.
His eyes were not on the Guardian's armor.
They were on its joints.
"Kael!" he shouted.
"Lead it toward the coolant chamber!"
Kael didn't know what that meant, but he trusted his father.
He changed direction immediately, sprinting deeper into the reactor.
The Guardian followed.
Its heavy limbs crashed through the narrow passages of broken machinery as it hunted him relentlessly.
Meanwhile Mara climbed onto the wreckage of an old reactor control platform. From the higher position she could see the entire interior structure of the tower.
Then she understood Arin's plan.
"Arin!" she shouted. "The coolant tanks are still here!"
Arin nodded.
He was already moving.
At the far end of the chamber, enormous cylindrical tanks stood half-buried under fallen debris. These tanks once held the supercooled liquid used to regulate the reactor core.
If even a small amount of that coolant still remained—
it would be extremely volatile.
Kael burst into the coolant chamber seconds later.
The room was smaller but filled with massive vertical pipes running from floor to ceiling. Frost covered parts of the metal surfaces where the old coolant system had frozen over decades.
Kael skidded to a stop.
"Now what?!"
The Guardian smashed through the entrance behind him.
Arin appeared from another corridor, carrying a small explosive charge from his pack.
"Duck!"
Kael dropped to the ground.
Arin threw the charge directly at one of the coolant tanks.
The explosive detonated instantly.
The tank ruptured.
A violent cloud of freezing vapor burst into the room as pressurized coolant sprayed across the chamber like a frozen storm.
The Guardian stepped directly into the blast.
Its armor instantly frosted over.
The machine froze mid-step as its joints locked under the sudden temperature drop.
"Now!" Arin shouted.
Mara fired from above.
Her rifle round struck the frozen armor at the exact joint where the Guardian's head connected to its body.
The frozen metal cracked.
Arin grabbed a heavy steel pipe from the floor and slammed it into the damaged joint with all his strength.
The crack spread.
The Guardian tried to move.
Its eye flickered violently.
Then the entire head snapped sideways.
The orange light died.
The machine collapsed.
The impact echoed across the silent reactor chamber like the fall of a giant.
Then everything became quiet again.
Only the slow dripping of coolant echoed through the tower.
Kael lay on the floor breathing heavily.
"Please tell me that was the only one."
Mara climbed down from the platform.
"For this reactor… yes."
Arin walked slowly toward the fallen Guardian.
His eyes were focused on something behind it.
Half buried under debris—
a steel door.
Old.
Massive.
And sealed with ancient warning symbols.
Kael stood up.
"What is that?"
Arin brushed dust away from the door surface.
Faded letters appeared beneath the dirt.
ACCESS TUNNEL – SUBTERRANEAN NETWORK
Mara stepped closer.
Her eyes widened.
"This reactor wasn't just a power station."
Arin nodded.
"It was part of the underground escape network."
Kael looked confused.
"Escape network?"
Arin turned toward him.
"During the Collapse Wars, the old world built thousands of hidden tunnels connecting military bases, cities, and shelters."
Mara's voice grew quiet.
"And one of those tunnels might lead directly to Sanctuary."
Kael stared at the steel door.
After everything they had crossed—
the answer might have been beneath their feet the entire time.
But Arin did not smile.
Because if they had found the tunnels—
there was a very real chance that ORION already knew about them too.
And somewhere deep beneath the earth—
the ancient war machines might already be waiting.
