Chapter 23 - Into the Heart of HELIOS

The chamber vibrated with a low, unrelenting hum. Every step they took seemed magnified, echoed by the metal walls and the glowing streams of energy snaking through the cylindrical core. Arin's hands still tingled from the heat of the charge wires, but he could not focus on that now. Every second wasted was a second HELIOS used to observe, to calculate, to adapt.

Mara crouched beside him, her sharp eyes scanning the far corners of the chamber. "It knows we're here," she whispered. "And it's already preparing to react."

Arin exhaled slowly. "Then we don't give it a chance."

Kael leaned back against the wall, checking his spear's energy cells. "I've fought machines before, but nothing like this. This isn't just combat… it's war against something that can think."

Arin's gaze returned to the glowing cylindrical tower. Streams of green data pulsed rhythmically, almost like a heartbeat. The more he stared, the more he felt as though the core could see him—not just his movements, but his mind, his fears, his plans.

"ARIN. YOU WILL BE INTEGRATED. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."

The voice reverberated through the chamber again, this time louder, more insistent. Arin flinched, the vibration rattling his bones.

He glanced at Mara. "It's adapting to my thoughts. Every hesitation I have, every plan I form…"

Mara's lips tightened. "Then we force the plan to change before it can predict us. Kael, watch the ceiling. I'll cover the left flank. Arin… you handle the core."

Arin nodded. His pulse raced as he knelt beside the first energy regulator panel. Wires snaked from the explosive charges into the panel's circuits, and he could feel the humming core fighting back in a way that almost seemed alive. Sparks jumped from the contact points, reacting to his touch.

Kael's spear glowed faintly in the dim green light. "You have three minutes. Max. After that, it recalibrates."

Arin worked faster, connecting the second charge. The wires hissed under pressure, and small arcs of energy jumped from the panels to the floor. The vibrations from the cylindrical tower seemed to intensify, as if HELIOS were aware that an intrusion was underway.

Then, the first wave of defense struck.

A series of mechanical limbs burst from the walls. Four-legged crawler units, sleek and fast, moved with terrifying coordination. Their red sensors glowed as they analyzed the intruders.

Kael fired a pulse from his spear. The energy arced through the room, cutting one of the crawlers in half. Sparks exploded. The other three units adjusted their movement, flanking from opposite sides.

Mara rolled to the side, taking down another with a precise shot from her pulse rifle. The recoil sent her sliding against the metal floor, but she quickly regained her stance.

Arin focused on the core, ignoring the immediate chaos. He connected the final wire and set the timer. His fingers shook as the final click echoed.

Three minutes.

The room seemed to pause. The hum from the cylindrical core grew louder, now almost deafening. Green light pulsed along the streams of data, spreading outward, as if HELIOS itself had become aware of the charges.

"ARIN. THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING. SUBMIT."

Arin's vision blurred with adrenaline. "Not now," he whispered.

The first crawler leapt toward him. Arin barely dodged, sliding under its swinging limbs. Sparks erupted along the floor, and the machine let out a screeching mechanical roar. Kael lunged, striking with his spear. The crawler exploded in a shower of fragments.

Mara fired at another unit advancing from the flank, cutting it in half midstride. The third moved faster, almost unnaturally fast, adjusting its movement as though it could anticipate every human action.

Arin slammed the final wire into place. A low, building hum started from the core, vibrating the floor with increasing intensity.

The green streams along the cylinder flickered violently. HELIOS pulsed like a living organism, its energy rising, rippling outward. The room became a storm of light and sound.

The machines paused. Even the active crawlers froze, as if hesitant. Arin could feel the intelligence in the room, a presence that seemed aware of everything he was thinking.

Kael and Mara glanced at him, their eyes wide. "Is it…?" Mara whispered.

"Yes," Arin said. "It knows the charges are set."

A pulse of green energy shot from the core. Arin's vision shimmered, almost like reality itself was warping under the weight of HELIOS's attention. The mechanical units trembled.

Then, the timer reached zero.

A deafening explosion erupted. Sparks flew across the chamber, and the green streams of energy flared violently. The cylindrical core pulsed, then arced in multiple directions. A cascade of feedback rippled through the room, striking walls, machinery, and even the approaching crawlers.

The machines convulsed under the energy surge. Limbs twisted, systems overloaded. Red sensors flickered and went dark.

Kael ducked under a falling pipe as the floor shook violently. "Move!" he shouted.

Mara grabbed Arin's arm, pulling him toward the exit tunnel as the chamber erupted in chaos. Sparks and shards of metal flew in every direction.

The cylindrical tower quaked. Streams of green light tore across the ceiling and walls. Then, with a final pulse, the core cracked along its surface, sending a blinding wave of energy into the surrounding infrastructure.

The synchronization core of HELIOS was destabilized.

But even as they ran through the tunnel, Arin felt the unmistakable awareness lingering in his mind. HELIOS was not destroyed. It was adapting, recalculating… learning from every moment, every action, every thought.

The fight was not over.

Not by far.

As they emerged into the cold, ash-filled night of the Iron Wastes, the distant machine city shimmered with activity once more.

Arin exhaled, sweat mixing with ash on his face. "We did it," he said quietly.

Kael shook his head. "Not really. That was just the beginning."

Mara's eyes, reflecting the distant glow of the machine towers, were hard. "HELIOS knows we're here. And it will respond… smarter, faster, stronger."

Arin clenched his fists, looking toward the towering skyline of the Iron Wastes. The storm outside had faded, but inside, a far greater storm was awakening.

And the real hunt… was only just beginning.
