Chapter 96 - enough space to hide

Kai:

Kai didn't waste a second after Ethan's final order.

The moment the room cleared even slightly, he stepped aside, phone already in hand, his expression completely different from the calm presence he usually carried. There was no hesitation in him now—only sharp focus, precision, and control. If Ethan was the force that destroyed enemies, Kai was the one who made sure nothing slipped through the cracks.

And right now—

Nothing could be allowed to slip.

---

"Activate all external surveillance," he said into the line, his voice low but firm. "I want eyes on every known route they could have taken after leaving the factory."

A pause.

Then he continued.

"No delays. No assumptions. I want confirmation."

---

He ended the call and immediately switched to another, walking toward the large digital screen mounted on the wall. Within seconds, multiple feeds started appearing—road cameras, private surveillance, intercepted traffic systems.

Every movement.

Every shadow.

Every possibility.

---

Kai's eyes scanned everything rapidly, his mind processing faster than most people could follow.

"They didn't go far," he muttered under his breath.

---

Luca, who had been standing nearby, glanced at the screen.

"You're sure?"

---

Kai nodded once.

"Injured targets don't run long distances unless they have a secure backup point nearby."

---

He zoomed into a specific route.

"This road," he pointed. "Minimal traffic. Leads to three possible locations—an abandoned dockyard, a private warehouse, or a medical safe house."

---

Ethan stepped closer, his presence immediately shifting the air again.

"Which one?" he asked.

---

Kai didn't answer immediately.

---

Instead, he tapped rapidly, pulling more data.

"Tracking vehicle heat signatures…" he muttered. "Cross-checking timestamps…"

---

A moment passed.

Then—

His eyes sharpened.

---

"…Got it."

---

He tapped the screen.

---

"Warehouse."

---

The image zoomed in—a large industrial structure, isolated, surrounded by minimal activity.

---

"Why there?" Luca asked.

---

Kai answered without looking away.

"Enough space to hide. Enough infrastructure to secure the perimeter. And most importantly—easy access for emergency medical support without drawing attention."

---

Ethan's gaze darkened slightly.

---

"They're regrouping," Kai added. "Stabilizing Viktor."

---

"And preparing," Luca muttered.

---

Kai nodded.

---

"Exactly."

---

He turned then, facing both of them.

---

"We don't have much time."

---

Silence followed.

---

Because they all knew what that meant.

---

Kai didn't stop.

---

He picked up another device, issuing rapid commands.

---

"Team A—shift to perimeter lockdown."

"Team B—double interior guard rotations."

"No one moves without clearance."

---

His voice was sharper now.

More commanding.

---

"And listen carefully," he added. "No mistakes."

---

A pause.

---

"I repeat—no mistakes."

---

He lowered the device slowly.

---

Then looked back at Ethan.

---

"They will strike back," Kai said plainly.

---

No fear.

No exaggeration.

---

Just fact.

---

"And this time," he continued, "they won't underestimate us."

---

Luca exhaled sharply.

"Great."

---

Kai ignored the sarcasm.

---

"They've seen her," he said instead, his gaze flicking briefly toward the hallway where Yuna was locked away.

---

Ethan's expression tightened.

---

Kai noticed.

But didn't comment.

---

"Which means," he continued, "she's a variable now."

---

Luca frowned slightly.

"A target."

---

Kai nodded.

---

"Yes."

---

The word landed heavily.

---

He turned back to the screen, pulling up internal security feeds now.

---

"Guards outside her room?" he asked.

---

"Already doubled," one of the men responded.

---

Kai shook his head slightly.

---

"Triple it."

---

The man hesitated.

---

Kai's eyes snapped toward him.

---

"Did I stutter?"

---

"No, sir."

---

"Then do it."

---

The man moved immediately.

---

Kai turned back again, his mind still running calculations.

---

"Install additional cameras on that floor," he added. "Blind spots eliminated. I want constant visual."

---

Another nod.

---

"Communication lines?" he asked.

---

"Secured."

---

Kai exhaled slowly.

---

But he wasn't satisfied.

---

Not yet.

---

Because something about this—

Didn't sit right.

---

"They retreated too cleanly," he muttered.

---

Luca looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

---

Kai crossed his arms slightly, eyes still on the screen.

---

"They didn't panic," he said. "They didn't scatter."

---

A pause.

---

"They left… strategically."

---

Ethan's gaze sharpened.

---

"They planned an exit," Kai added. "Which means they expected resistance."

---

"And still came," Luca said.

---

Kai nodded.

---

"That's what worries me."

---

Silence.

---

Because that meant one thing.

---

This wasn't over.

---

Not even close.

---

Kai straightened slightly.

---

"We need to assume they're already planning their next move," he said.

---

Ethan didn't respond.

---

But his silence—

Meant agreement.

---

Kai continued issuing orders.

---

"Rotate guards every fifteen minutes."

"No predictable patterns."

"Anyone suspicious—detain immediately."

---

His tone left no room for error.

---

Because error—

Would cost lives.

---

And Kai didn't allow that.

---

Not under his watch.

---

He finally stepped back slightly, scanning everything one last time.

---

Systems active.

Security tightened.

Surveillance locked.

---

Everything was in place.

---

For now.

---

But even as he stood there—

Calm.

Controlled.

---

His instincts told him something.

---

This wasn't the end of the attack.

---

It was the beginning of something bigger.

---

And next time—

They wouldn't just come for power.

---

They would come for revenge.

---

And for her.

Kai didn't step away from the screens even after everything was set.

For most people, this level of security would've been enough.

For Kai—

It wasn't.

---

He stood there, arms crossed, eyes moving from one feed to another, watching patterns most people wouldn't even notice. A guard shifting his weight too often. A camera flicker that lasted half a second longer than it should. A vehicle passing the same road twice.

Nothing escaped him.

---

"Replay that," he said suddenly.

---

One of the men beside him quickly rewound the footage.

---

Kai leaned slightly closer to the screen.

---

"There," he pointed.

---

A black vehicle—barely visible—moving past a distant checkpoint.

---

"It slowed down," Kai murmured.

---

Luca glanced at it.

"Could be nothing."

---

Kai didn't agree.

---

"Nothing doesn't slow down in high-risk zones," he replied.

---

He turned to the operator.

"Trace it."

---

"Yes, sir."

---

The system began tracking, pulling up possible routes, license fragments, movement patterns.

---

Kai exhaled slowly.

---

"Even if it's nothing," he added, "we treat it like something."

---

That was his rule.

---

Assume the worst.

Prepare for it.

---

Because underestimating—

Was how people died.

---

His gaze shifted again, this time toward the internal camera feed showing the hallway outside Yuna's room.

---

Three guards.

Positioned exactly as ordered.

---

Still—

Kai wasn't satisfied.

---

"Add one more," he said.

---

The guard beside him blinked.

"Sir, that makes four—"

---

"I know how to count," Kai cut him off coldly.

---

A brief silence.

---

"Do it."

---

"Yes, sir."

---

Kai watched as another man took position outside the door.

---

Only then did he nod slightly.

---

"Keep rotating them," he added. "No one stays in the same position for more than fifteen minutes."

---

"Understood."

---

He turned away from the screen for a moment, walking slowly across the room, his mind still working through scenarios.

---

If Viktor survived—

He would retaliate.

---

If Alejandro led—

He would plan.

---

Either way—

They would come back.

---

And when they did—

They wouldn't make the same mistakes.

---

Kai stopped near the table, resting one hand against it as he looked down at the maps again.

---

"They'll test us first," he said quietly.

---

Luca looked up.

"Test?"

---

Kai nodded.

---

"Small moves. Probing defenses. Looking for weak points."

---

A pause.

---

"And if they find one…"

---

He didn't finish the sentence.

---

He didn't need to.

---

Ethan's voice came low from behind.

"They won't."

---

Kai glanced at him.

---

There was no doubt in Ethan's tone.

---

But Kai wasn't someone who relied on certainty.

---

He relied on preparation.

---

"I'll make sure they don't," Kai replied.

---

He picked up his device again, issuing more quiet commands.

---

"Deploy two external scouts."

"Keep them off visible routes."

"I want eyes beyond our perimeter."

---

Another pause.

---

"And one more thing," he added.

---

The room stilled slightly.

---

"If anything feels wrong…"

---

His voice lowered.

---

"You don't wait for confirmation."

---

A beat.

---

"You act."

---

The message was clear.

---

No hesitation.

No second-guessing.

---

Because hesitation—

Was what enemies waited for.

---

Kai finally lowered the device again, his gaze lifting one last time to the screens.

---

Everything was in place.

Every angle covered.

Every risk considered.

---

But still—

A quiet tension remained inside him.

---

Because experience had taught him something important.

---

The most dangerous moment—

Was when everything seemed under control.

---

And right now—

Everything looked exactly like that.

---

Which meant—

Something was coming.

---

And when it did—

Kai would be ready.
