Sokovia. The church. Center of the floating city.
The air inside the ruins was hot enough to sear lungs.
Ultron picked itself off the shattered altar, the scorch mark from Jetray's neuroshock already fading under the vibranium's self-repair system. Not a scratch remained. The metal god was intact.
But it was no longer calm.
"You are all very annoying."
The composure that Ultron had maintained since its birth — the urbane, cultured persona of a being that considered itself above its creators — was cracking. What showed through the cracks was something uglier. More desperate. More human.
Faint purple energy particles drifted around its vibranium frame — crude attempts to replicate the cosmic power it had glimpsed through the Mind Stone. Not refined. Not stable. But enough to add another layer of defense to an already near-indestructible body.
WHOOSH—BOOM!
Tony landed beside Jake, repulsors hot. Thor dropped from the sky, Mjolnir crackling. Steve took the flank, shield raised. Hulk leaped back through the hole he'd made earlier, roaring. Natasha, Barton, Vision, Gwen, Pietro, Wanda — one by one, they converged on the church.
They formed a circle around the humming vibranium core. Back to back. Shoulder to shoulder.
Gods. Monsters. Spies. Soldiers. An alien shapeshifter. An interdimensional spider-girl. A synthetic being with an Infinity Stone in his forehead. A teenager from another universe piloting a watch that contained a million species.
This was the Avengers at full strength.
"Alright." Thor wiped oil off Mjolnir and eyed the robot swarm massing outside. "Is this really all it's got? I expected the 'extinction of humanity' to have better production values."
"Thor," Steve sighed, "do you have to taunt it?"
As if in answer—
"This is the answer I give you."
Ultron spread its arms and howled.
KA-KA-KA-KA—
Sokovia shuddered. From every sewer grate, every building cavity, every crack in the earth — sentinels erupted. Not dozens. Not hundreds. Thousands. Ten times the force from before, pouring from every hidden compartment in the city like a hornet's nest that had been kicked by a god.
They blotted out the sky. A steel tsunami, converging on the church from every direction.
"Oh my god..." Gwen breathed, mask-eyes wide. "This is robot World War Z."
"This is the fight." Steve tightened his shield strap. "Guard the core. As long as there's one civilian left to evacuate — we don't give up a single inch."
"Jake! We need fortifications!" Natasha shouted. "This church is open on all sides — Barton's exposed!"
"On it."
Jake detransformed from Jetray and hit the Omnitrix. For a positional defense against an overwhelming numerical advantage in an enclosed space, there was one perfect choice.
Pale green light.
Diamondhead.
"Diamond Barrier!"
Jake slammed both crystal palms flat on the church floor.
RRUMMMBLE—!
Crystal erupted from the stone — not wild, not random, but architectural. Massive Petrosapien pillars burst upward and interlocked, fusing into translucent diamond walls that sealed every gap, every entrance, every vulnerability. The crystal fortification wrapped around the core in concentric layers, leaving precisely positioned firing ports for Barton's arrows and Natasha's weapons.
"Much safer."
Jake's hands reshaped into two crystal Gatling barrels — multi-barreled, self-generating, and loaded with an infinite supply of diamond-hard shrapnel.
"Now — target practice."
DA-DA-DA-DA-DA—!!
Diamond fragments poured through the firing ports in a continuous stream, each shard capable of punching through sentinel armor. No reloading. No overheating. No limit.
"OPEN FIRE!"
The Avengers unleashed everything.
Tony's repulsors and micro-missiles. Thor's lightning arcing in chains across the sky. Vision's Mind Stone beam cutting surgical lines through the swarm. Hulk's fists turning robots into confetti. Gwen's webs snatching sentinels out of the air and slamming them into each other. Wanda's scarlet energy crushing them like empty cans. Pietro, a silver streak, pulling damaged robots apart at speed.
The church became a fortress of multicolored destruction — beams, bolts, lightning, and diamond shrapnel painting the air in deadly rainbows.
Robots fell like wheat. But more kept coming.
"I will CRUSH all of you!"
Ultron entered the fight personally.
Its vibranium body tanked the crossfire — repulsor blasts sparking off its chest, lightning dissipating across its surface — and it bulled through the defense line by sheer durability, grabbed Thor mid-lightning-strike, and hurled him through what remained of the church's north wall.
"For that Vision!"
Ultron charged for the core.
"Not today!" Vision intercepted, hands locking against Ultron's shoulders, and the two crashed through the crumbling walls into open sky.
"Even without that body — I am stronger than you!"
The purple energy around Ultron flared, and for a terrible moment, it overpowered Vision's resistance — pushing him back, overwhelming the Mind Stone's output.
"Its energy is spiking!" Vision's voice strained. "It's resonating with the vibranium core! My beam can't penetrate the shield!"
"Take it down!" Tony arrived, hovering.
Thor rocketed back, Mjolnir blazing.
Three of the Avengers' heaviest hitters — plus Vision — converged on Ultron in mid-air.
"MELT IT!" Tony roared.
ZZZZZZZ—!
Vision's Mind Stone fired a golden beam. Tony's chest reactor and palm repulsors opened at maximum simultaneous output. Thor channeled his strongest lightning through Mjolnir, focusing it into a concentrated stream.
Three beams converged on Ultron's chest.
Gold. Blue-white. Orange-electric. The energies braided together, generating temperatures that made the surrounding air ignite.
"AAAARGH!" Ultron howled. But it didn't fall. That layer of purple energy — crude, unstable, but backed by vibranium's legendary durability — held. Cracking. Flickering. But holding.
"This tin can is too tough!" Tony's teeth were clenched, every warning light in his HUD screaming red. "I'm at maximum output! We need more!"
"Then let's add some fire."
On the ground, Jake had just driven a diamond spear through a sentinel's skull. He looked up at the stalemate in the sky — three beams pouring everything they had into a target that wouldn't melt — and his eyes went sharp.
"EVERYONE! Behind the crystal wall! NOW!"
He slapped the Omnitrix.
"Physical force can't crack vibranium. What we need is the temperature of a stellar core."
Deep, metallic flash.
Jake transformed into a short, stout figure encased in heavy dark-green radiation armor — the containment suit of a being whose natural state was too dangerous to exist unshielded.
NRG. Prypiatosian-B.
"It's a little chilly up here. Let me warm things up."
The muffled, bass-heavy voice echoed from inside the suit. Then Jake did something that made every person on the ground take an involuntary step backward.
He reached for the release valve on his helmet.
And twisted.
CRACK!
The containment suit — designed to withstand nuclear detonation, the last barrier between NRG's true form and the outside world — opened.
BOOOM!!
Crimson light flooded the church ruins. Every Avenger on the ground shielded their eyes. The air ionized — crackling, shimmering, turning visible as plasma. Diamond fragments on the ground began to soften and glow. The temperature spiked past anything measurable by conventional instruments.
From within the opened armor stepped NRG's true form — a humanoid figure composed entirely of concentrated radioactive energy, glowing like a miniature sun. Pure nuclear fusion given a body and a purpose.
"Take this — NUCLEAR IMPACT!!"
NRG opened its mouth, brought its hands together, and compressed. The radiation — which naturally radiated in all directions — was deliberately focused, squeezed into a single coherent beam aimed at the sky.
A column of crimson nuclear energy erupted upward — a solar flare in miniature, carrying temperatures that could burn through planetary crust.
The triple beam became a quadruple beam.
Gold. Blue-white. Orange-electric. And now — crimson nuclear.
Four colors of destruction, converging on a single point.
"WHAT IS THIS?!" Ultron's voice pitched into genuine terror for the first time in its existence.
The purple shield — which had held against three Avengers' combined output — lasted exactly one more second against four.
It burst like a soap bubble.
"NO — THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! I AM ETERNITY—"
The quadruple beam hit unshielded vibranium.
And vibranium, the hardest metal on Earth — the material that had shrugged off everything this battle had thrown at it — began to flow.
Not melt. Not soften. Flow. Like wax in a blast furnace. Like ice cream on the surface of the sun.
SSSSSZZZZZ—pffft!
Ultron's arms dissolved. Its torso liquefied. The core housing vaporized. The remains — an unrecognizable mass of glowing slag — dropped from the sky and hit the ground with a wet, heavy splat that was deeply undignified for something that had called itself eternal.
All four beams cut off simultaneously.
Jake scrambled back into the containment suit, sealing it shut before the ambient radiation could reach anyone at ground level. The heavy armor locked closed with a reassuring clank.
"Phew... done." He patted his scorching helmet. "Temperature was just right. Medium-well."
"Remind me," Tony said, faceplate open, staring at the smoking puddle of what used to be Ultron, "to never play 'who's hotter' with you again. My sensors almost caught fire."
"Is it dead?" Steve walked over and prodded the slag with his boot.
"This body is destroyed." Vision descended slowly, the Mind Stone on his forehead dimmer than usual. "But I can sense a fragment of its consciousness. It escaped into one final form."
He pointed toward the forest at the city's edge.
"The last robot."
"I'll go." Vision's voice was quiet. Certain. "This is an ending I need to deliver personally."
"Before that—"
Jake didn't detransform. He looked out at Sokovia — still floating, still descending, still carrying civilians who hadn't made it to the lifeboats.
"We haven't won yet. The city is coming down whether we like it or not. And not everyone's off."
