Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The Siege of the Southern Root

The forest didn't shake that midnight. It suffocated, pressure building from every direction at once until the air itself felt thinner than it should have.

The Southern perimeter formation didn't collapse from a single overwhelming strike. It came apart from synchronized impact instead — perfect timing, perfect calculation, the kind of coordination that told him immediately this had been planned for considerably longer than the two weeks he'd spent surviving in this valley.

Shadows emerged from the treeline first, then forms, then an entire army settling into view all at once — corrupted wolves, demon-armored infantry, winged night fiends circling overhead like carrion waiting for something to finish dying. Eight hundred demon-aligned units in total, five hundred corrupted beasts ranging from Bronze to Silver, two hundred and fifty demon disciples at Mid to Late Silver, forty-nine elite captains at Peak Silver, and at their center, the Void Fang Commander himself, sitting at Half-step Gold.

This wasn't a raid. It was containment warfare, professional and cold in exactly the way everything else this Demon Sect had done over the last two weeks had been.

The Southern Root chamber sat underground, dense forest terrain and high roots and uneven, concealed ridges spread above it. The Demon Sect's forces spread into a crescent formation across that terrain, cutting off escape vectors, forcing any resistance upward into open ground rather than letting it hide underground where the sect's own formations gave it an advantage.

Their objective was simple enough to read from the formation alone: overwhelm the surface defense, force Lin Tianren into open combat, capture him during the chaos before anyone could stop them.

Inside the root chamber, he opened his eyes, steady despite the pressure building above him.

"Activate Phase One," he said quietly.

Beneath the soil, emerald sigils ignited in careful sequence, and the ground ruptured as spirit roots shot upward like living spears, impaling dozens of corrupted beasts before they'd even registered the ground beneath them had turned hostile. The forest wasn't simply terrain tonight. It was a weapon, exactly the way the Beast Queen had designed it to be during the council session days ago.

He stepped onto the surface with his silver aura steady and contained, the fox landing lightly beside him, nine tails igniting in pale spiritual flame. Above them, the Void Fang Commander descended slowly, Half-step Gold pressure rolling outward like invisible gravity pressing against everything in range.

"You chose to stand," the commander said.

"I chose to guard," Lin Tianren replied evenly.

Three hundred corrupted wolves charged simultaneously across the clearing. Any ordinary cultivator would have retreated at the sight of it. He didn't. Instead, he expanded his sovereign field slightly — not full domain, just a single controlled pulse — and the wolves faltered mid-charge, half a breath of hesitation rippling through their entire formation.

Half a breath was enough. The fox unleashed a partial illusion domain, fracturing the battlefield visually into duplicates, phantom terrain, false angles that sent half the charging wolves colliding directly into each other. Chaos detonated through their ranks before a single one reached him.

He moved through what remained, not like a berserker cutting through anything in reach, but like a controlled flame — strike, withdraw, redirect, never static long enough for anything to properly target him. Precision over dominance, the same lesson he'd spent two weeks learning under threat of death from three different women who'd each, in their own way, insisted it mattered more than raw strength.

Ten Peak Silver captains surrounded him next, coordinated with a precision that told him this wasn't their first time fighting as a unit. He blocked two blades, evaded three attacks, and felt one slip through anyway, steel tearing across his ribs in a line of sudden, sharp pain. Blood spilled, warm and immediate.

His core remained stable regardless.

[Combat Mode: Adaptive Surge]

Flame and frost merged cleanly beneath the wound, no backlash, no instability slowing the response. A balanced arc of compressed energy erupted outward, throwing two captains back hard enough to end their part of the fight. The fox's illusions distorted enemy spacing again, buying him another window.

But the numbers kept pressing harder regardless of how cleanly he fought. This was attrition warfare, and attrition didn't care how precisely he moved if there were simply enough bodies left to keep coming.

The Void Fang Commander moved then, trees flattening beneath his aura alone before he'd even struck, and one casual blow sent Lin Tianren skidding ten meters back across the clearing, blood filling his throat from the impact.

Mid Silver against Half-Gold. The gap was exactly as overwhelming as he'd calculated it would be, back in the chamber, before any of this had started.

The commander smiled faintly, unbothered by the resistance. "You're more valuable alive," he said, as if that settled the matter entirely.

Two forest ridges exploded outward without warning. Beast cavalry surged from concealment, armored spirit beasts charging directly into the demon infantry's flank, and from above, elder strike teams descended into the chaos exactly where the Queen's counter-design had positioned them days earlier.

The battlefield flipped in an instant. The demon forces now fought on two fronts instead of one, their crescent formation forced to bend rather than press forward.

From the eastern flank, Ravikron's aura erupted outward, Peak Silver dominance crushing three elite captains almost simultaneously. He didn't look toward Lin Tianren once. He didn't need to.

He had arrived exactly when he'd said he would.

The forest became a full maelstrom after that — emerald root spears meeting demonic blades, illusion foxfire tangling with corrupted howl storms, beast cavalry trampling infantry lines while demonic ritual marks ignited beneath every fallen body scattered across the clearing.

Two hundred demon units fell. Then three hundred. Still the crescent formation held its shape, refusing to break entirely — not panicking, enduring, the way something built for exactly this kind of prolonged fight was designed to endure.

The Void Fang Commander stepped forward again, and this time there was no restraint left in the gesture. Gold-level pressure condensed into a single descending strike, death-level force aimed directly at the center of the clearing where Lin Tianren stood.

He didn't retreat. He inhaled instead, flame and frost and sovereign silver merging fully for the first time since he'd woken up in this body — a complete expansion of his sovereign field, held for three full breaths.

The forest itself seemed to bend toward him. Beasts across the clearing howled in resonance, matching a rhythm he hadn't consciously called for. The commander's descending strike slowed under the pressure. Not stopped. Slowed, just enough.

Ravikron intercepted mid-air a heartbeat later, steel colliding directly with demonic aura in an explosion that shattered half the clearing outright, shockwaves uprooting ancient trees that had stood since long before this sect had ever claimed this valley.

Smoke filled the battlefield afterward, over three hundred demon units confirmed down, momentum finally building in the sect's favor.

Then crimson ritual symbols ignited beneath every fallen corpse across the clearing — human, beast, demon, all of it fuel, all of it redirected somewhere he couldn't see directly but could feel with total clarity through the sovereign resonance still running through him.

Far away, the Demon Lord's ritual surged. Thirty-seven percent. Forty-three. Fifty-one, climbing steadily with every death this battlefield produced.

His expression hardened as the full shape of the trap finally settled into place. "They want casualties," he said, quiet enough that only the fox beside him heard it clearly. "This was never about winning here. It's about feeding something else, somewhere beyond this forest entirely."

Above them, the sky fractured faintly — not thunder, not storm, something closer to a seam splitting open in the fabric of the night itself. This war had stopped being local the moment the ritual symbols ignited beneath the dead.

It was anchoring now.

The siege had only just begun. And somewhere far beyond the mist and the burning canopy, something considerably larger than eight hundred units was finally beginning to move.
