Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Night Before

The moon hung low over Maplewood City, casting long shadows across the market square.

Ren Kai's alley was quiet now; the last customers gone, the children sent home to sleep. Only the soft crackle of his stove and the distant hum of the city broke the silence.

He had been practicing for six hours.

Flame Lash came easily now—a whip of golden fire that obeyed his intent, stretching across the courtyard, curling around imaginary enemies, dissipating on command.

Wok Barrier was harder; the manual called for a specific rhythm of spinning that his arms still struggled to master. But he had made progress. The system confirmed it:

[Skill Progress: Culinary Combat]

· Flame Lash: Mastered (Basic)

· Wok Barrier: 67% — Requires synchronization of breath and movement

· Pepper Cloud: 42% — Spice dispersion pattern needs refinement

· Knife-Qi Slash: Not attempted (requires Chef Rank: Spiritual Chef Lv.3)

Not enough. But it would have to do.

He was practicing Pepper Cloud for the twelfth time—grinding dried chili, channeling Qi, attempting to disperse the cloud in a controlled burst—when he heard the footsteps.

Not Guild enforcers.

These were light, quick, confident—the sound of someone who knew the alleys well.

Xiao Liu appeared at the entrance, face pale, breath coming in short gasps.

"Ren Kai. There's a woman at the market edge. She says she knows you. Says she has something you need."

Ren Kai's hand went to his knife.

"What does she look like?"

"Tall. Silver hair. Sword at her hip," Xiao Liu said, eyes wide. "She's hurt."

Luo Xue was waiting at the fountain in the main square, her back pressed against the stone. Blood seeped through her grey robes—black and thick, wrong.

Ren Kai crossed to her quickly, system analyzing every detail.

[Diagnostic Scan]

Wound: Laceration, left side. Depth: Moderate.

Poison Detected: Soul-Rot Venom (Spirit Grade). Effect: Qi corruption, prevents healing.

Time before spread: 4 hours.

"You came," Luo Xue said, voice tight with pain. "I wasn't sure you would."

"You said you'd bring the poison," he said, kneeling beside her, "I assumed you meant in a vial."

She laughed, wincing. "The Poison Chef found me. Wanted to know what I knew about you. About your cooking. I didn't tell him anything."

"Where is he now?"

"Gone. Left me alive. Said it was a message." Her eyes met his. "He's going to destroy you tomorrow. In front of everyone. He wants to watch you break."

Ren Kai didn't respond immediately.

Not because he didn't understand—

but because he finally did.

This wasn't a competition.

It was an execution… that he had been invited to survive.

Ren Kai's jaw tightened. He pulled the last of his Moon-Silver Herb from his pouch.

"Can you walk?"

"Barely."

He didn't wait.

Sliding an arm beneath her, he half-carried her back toward his stall.

The children had built a fire in the courtyard.

Lianhua was waiting, clean cloth and water at hand.

She didn't ask questions. She simply moved aside.

Ren Kai laid Luo Xue on the sleeping mat and went to work.

The venom was worse than he thought, black veins creeping from the laceration, tainting her Qi.

[Seven-Soul Harmony Soup – Modified]

Requirement: Counter Soul-Rot Venom

Ingredients needed: Moon-Silver Herb, Fire-Aspected Chili, pure water

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Warning: Patient will not survive 30 minutes

His hands stilled.

"The venom is spreading too fast. I need something to slow it."

Lianhua stepped forward, her pendant glowing.

"My jade. It's kept my bloodline dormant for years. Maybe it can do the same for poison."

"You don't know that."

"No." She unclasped the pendant, pressing it into Luo Xue's hand. "But she's going to die if we do nothing."

The effect was immediate. The black veins halted their advance, retreating a fraction. Luo Xue's flickering Qi steadied.

[Ancestral Resonance Detected]

Heirloom: Pendant of the Last Chef – Purification property activated

Time gained: 45 minutes

Ren Kai moved.

He lit the stove, filled the pot with water, and began. The Seven-Soul Harmony Soup was the most complex dish he knew—seven ingredients, seven infusions, each timed to the patient's breath.

He had made it once before for Bai, taking six hours. Now he had forty-five minutes.

"Xiao Liu," he said, not looking up, "the chest beneath my cart. Bring me the Moon-Dew Essence."

The boy ran.

"Lianhua. Fire-Aspected Chili. Grind it fine. I need it in three minutes."

She moved to his side, hands steady, reaching for the mortar.

He worked. Hands flying, Qi flowing.

The water boiled. First infusion: Moon-Silver Herb, steeped in his Qi, calming the venom. Scent rose, clean and sharp.

Second: Fire-Aspected Chili, finely ground, poured in a thin stream. Steam hissed in silver and red.

Third: preserved Shadow Panther meat, sliced thin, added as the broth peaked. Essence blended perfectly with herbs, fire, and water.

Luo Xue gasped. Her Qi surged.

"Hold her," Ren Kai said. Lianhua and Xiao Liu pressed down on her shoulders as her body convulsed. The black veins pulsed, retreating, then surged again.

Ren Kai poured more Qi into the broth, forcing harmony.

Fourth infusion: a single drop of Moon-Dew Essence. Broth blazed silver, then gold, then settled into warm amber.

[Seven-Soul Harmony Soup: 78% complete]

Patient stability: Critical

Time remaining: 12 minutes

The black veins didn't just crawl—they began to pulse, syncing with her heartbeat.

Each pulse spread them faster.

He wasn't racing time anymore.

He was losing to it.

Ren Kai's hands shook. Qi nearly gone, but he couldn't stop.

Fifth: last of the Azure Lotus rice, cooked to a paste, stirred in, thickening the broth.

Sixth: his own Qi, poured like water from an empty vessel. For a moment, he felt himself slipping.

Lianhua caught his arm. "Stay with me."

Seventh: the pendant. Pressed into the pot, flaring.

The moment the pendant touched the broth, the world stilled.

Sound vanished. Heat froze. Time… hesitated.

Ren Kai stood—just for a heartbeat—in a kitchen of white stone.

And something ancient… was watching him cook, a woman with eyes like flame, a single bowl glowing like captured sun. Then it faded.

The soup was done.

He ladled it to Luo Xue's lips. She drank, trembled, black veins vanished. Core Formation Qi stabilized, strong.

"That… was terrible," she whispered, voice hoarse.

A pause. Then, faintly—

"…you need more salt."

Her lips curved. She was alive.

Ren Kai laughed, relief and exhaustion mingling.

He slumped against the stove. She was alive.

Lianhua laughed, tears streaking her face. Xiao Liu danced in circles. The children gathered, whispering. Luo Xue looked at Ren Kai with respect—a flicker of acknowledgment for the cook who had defied death.

"You're going to need more than pepper clouds," she said.

"I know," Ren Kai replied.

She sat up, testing her side. "The Poison Chef has hunted Chef Bloodlines for centuries. He knows every trick, every counter, every weakness."

Ren Kai looked at his stove, his pot, his hands.

Tomorrow he would cook for his life.

Tomorrow he would face a Core Formation alchemist and the Poison Chef who had destroyed every cook before him.

Tomorrow he would find out if he was strong enough.

He rose unsteadily, walked to his cart. Ingredients untouched, manual of Culinary Combat open on the counter. Somewhere in the market shadows, the Poison Chef waited.

Dawn came grey and cold, heavy clouds promising rain.

Ren Kai stood at his stall, stove lit, ingredients arranged, knife at his hip. He hadn't slept. Practice with Luo Xue had lasted until first light, teaching angles, patterns, rhythm of fight.

He was as ready as he could be.

Xiao Liu appeared, face pale. "Ren Kai. The square is full. City Lord is there. Guild is there. And… a man in grey. He smells wrong."

The Poison Chef.

Ren Kai nodded, hands steady on the stove.

"Then let's not keep them waiting."

He picked up his pot, ladle, knife. Lianhua and Luo Xue fell into step. Xiao Liu and the children formed a ring around his cart, faces fierce, hands ready.

They walked into the square.

The crowd didn't just part—

it retreated.

As if something unseen moved with him.

As if the air itself made way.

At the center, Wei Chen stood beside his furnace, face carved from stone. Half-hidden in shadow, a man in grey watched, eyes like black voids.

For a moment, Ren Kai's vision flickered.

Not from fear—

but because something in that man's presence felt… wrong.

Like a dish that had rotted, but still moved.

Above, on the City Lord's dais, a golden crane stood upon the dais, feathers gleaming like forged sunlight.

It did not move.

It did not blink.

Its gaze locked onto Ren Kai—

not with curiosity…

but recognition.

Ren Kai lit his stove. The fire caught. He smiled.

Not at the crowd.

Not at Wei Chen.

But at the fire.

Because no matter what happened next—

he was still the one cooking.
