Chapter 242: I Missed You
Marlene understood that Elias had tricked her the instant the bill was safely in his hand.
She lunged for it.
"Hmm?"
Elias narrowed his eyes.
The look stopped her cold.
Marlene's hand hovered in the air, close enough to snatch the money back, yet she could not force herself to close the final inch. The boy in front of her had once ducked his head when she shouted. He had once gone quiet when she demanded something. Now he looked at her with the steady, chilly patience of someone deciding whether she was worth bothering with.
"Thanks for the gambling money," Elias said pleasantly.
He folded the fifty-dollar bill, tucked it away, and gave her a little wave as he walked out.
The front door shut.
Marlene stood in the living room with every word she wanted to scream trapped behind her teeth.
