Chapter 16 - The Forest Awakens

Chapter 16: The Forest Awakens

The forest had grown silent the beast was dead.

Archie wiped his sword clean on the grass before slipping the blade back into the sheath. The cool night air moved gently through the tall trees, causing the leaves above them to flutter. For a moment, it felt like the forest had quieted.

Seraphine stood by the dead beast, her eyes still studying the peculiar markings on its hide.

Suddenly, the ground trembled.

At first, it was almost imperceptible, just a ripple beneath their feet. Archie frowned slightly and looked down.

"Did you feel that?"

Before Seraphine could respond, the ground trembled again. Stronger this time, the deep vibration rolled through the forest floor like distant thunder underground.

The leaves above their heads began to rustle furiously.

From somewhere deep within the forest, birds erupted from the canopy in a dark cloud, wings beating frantically, and disappeared into the night sky. Archie narrowed his eyes and looked up.

"That... Wasn't normal."

Seraphine had gone completely still.

Her gaze was locked on something deep in the forest ahead, her expression colder than Archie had ever seen it. Another tremor shuddered through the ground. Then the forest exploded into noise.

Branches snapped somewhere ahead of them, animals darted through the undergrowth in sudden bursts of motion, and a herd of deer galloped through the trees, their hooves pounding against the earth as they raced through the dark woods.

Something had made them flee.

Archie stepped aside to avoid the stampeding animals.

"What in the world is happening?"

Seraphine didn't answer for a moment.

Her senses were stretched out through the forest, feeling the currents of energy drifting through the air unseen in the darkness. Vampires, by their very nature, were tied to the supernatural. Something enormous had just stirred and she felt it, something ancient that terrified the very core of her being had awakened.

Her eyes narrowed.

"This forest is reacting to something," she said quietly.

Archie looked at her. "Reacting to what?"

Seraphine's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Something... Powerful."

Another roar echoed through the trees. It was faint, but carried a weight that made the branches above them tremble. Another roar followed. And then a third.

Archie slowly turned his head toward the deeper parts of the forest.

These were not normal creatures.

The sounds were echoing and multiplying.

Seraphine's eyes darkened. The truth was starting to dawn on her. Whatever had woken up, had somehow disturbed the entire wilderness. This was no longer just their quiet forest.

This was a war zone and then it came.

A massive howl boomed across the night, so deep it seemed to vibrate within their very bones, making the ground beneath their feet shake. Archie's hand flew to the hilt of his sword.

Branches began to shake all around them. Shadows danced between the trees, and heavy footsteps and scraping claws echoed from all directions. More and more of them were coming. They were coming quickly.

The first creature burst from the undergrowth to Archie's left. It was a wolf, but larger than any animal should be. Its shoulders reached Archie's chest and its dark fur was bristled like needles. Yellow eyes burned in its skull, and it slid across the forest floor, closing in on them.

Archie had already drawn his sword. The beast lunged.

Steel flashed. Archie dodged to the side and drove his blade across the creature's throat in one swift motion. The beast collapsed with a heavy thud. There was no time to catch their breath.

Two more shapes emerged from the trees behind it.

"More!" Archie yelled.

Seraphine moved instantly. Her form became a blur as she zipped across the clearing. The first of the wolves lunged at her with its jaws gaping open. She caught it mid-air by the throat, slammed it into the ground, and cracked the soil beneath it before crushing its skull under her heel. The third wolf jumped from the trees at Archie from the side. He spun and drove his blade through the creature's chest as it jumped.

Archie shoved the body aside and looked up. More shadows moved between the trees.

"Seraphine?" he said softly.

"I can see them."

The undergrowth ahead of them started to rustle and shake. Strange shapes began to crawl from beneath the twisted roots of the forest floor, unnatural and grotesque. They moved on limbs bent at awkward angles as they dragged themselves across the earth. One hissed at them, then surged forward.

Archie shifted his stance. "Left side's yours."

Seraphine didn't respond, her gaze fixed on something high above them.

A moment later, Archie saw it too. Branches in the highest reaches of the forest canopy shook. A large shadow glided between trees, its wings briefly unfolding in the moonlight, before disappearing back into the foliage.

"Flying ones, too?" Archie muttered.

"Focus," Seraphine said calmly.

The crawling things attacked first. They swarmed over the ground like a tidal wave, claws ripping at the earth as they rushed forward. Archie didn't hesitate, cutting and slashing at the creatures that lunged at him. One jumped at him from the side, but Seraphine caught it by the spine and snapped it back with a sharp movement before tossing the body away.

More wolves began to emerge. The clearing was becoming a swirling mass of claws, teeth, and steel. Archie felt his heart pound in his chest; a week ago this many creatures would have overwhelmed him physically. Now he moved fluidly, his body responding as trained. He sidestepped a leaping wolf and drove his sword through its ribs, twisting away just in time from another lunge from behind.

Seraphine was moving just as fast, but her attention was shifting back to the deeper parts of the forest. Something about this attack was wrong. She watched the creatures as they darted past them. Some were rushing at them, but others were just running through the clearing without even looking their way. They were running away from the depts of the forest and towards the city.

Seraphine narrowed her eyes. "This isn't random," she said.

Archie cut down another wolf and glanced at her. "What?"

"These creatures," she said, "they're not hunting for food or anything."

Another wolf flashed past them, barely registering their presence. Seraphine's voice turned cold. "They're migrating. Toward the city."

Archie frowned. "Toward what?"

Seraphine's gaze flickered to the distant horizon, toward the city beyond the trees. "The city."

The forest suddenly went utterly still. Both of them could feel it. An immense presence was pressing against the air itself.

Deep within the forest, branches began to snap.

Slowly.

Something huge was moving through the woods.

Then the trees ahead of them exploded outward. A massive creature burst from the darkness, three times the size of the wolves, covered in thick armor plating. Its eyes glowed with a fierce intelligence none of the other beasts possessed. The ground shook as it stepped into the clearing. And this time, it was not running toward the city.

It was staring right at them with an immerse killing intent in it's eyes.

The armored beast didn't hesitate and It charged.

The earth pounded beneath its weight as it galloped toward them, its claws gouging deep into the dirt with every stride. Archie barely managed to bring his sword up before the monster was upon him.

Seraphine made the first move.

With a burst of speed she darted in and struck the monster square across the jaw, the impact reverberating through the entire clearing. The beast stumbled to the side, but it did not fall. Its plated hide was too thick to be affected by the blow.

The beast roared and swiped its massive claws.

Archie ducked under the attack and drove his blade into a gap between two plates of armor on its side. The sword plunged deep but did not even slow the monster as it twisted violently, flinging Archie across the ground.

Seraphine saw her opening.

She leaped onto the creature's back, jammed both hands into the space between the creature's head and shoulder plates, and twisted sharply dragging out the beast spine out of it's body.

A sharp crack split the air.

The beast staggered forward.

Archie pushed himself to his feet and charged again. As the creature turned to face Seraphine, he buried his blade deep into the soft flesh of its throat.

The monster's immense body twitched once, and then it fell, crashing to the ground.

Silence fell again, and neither of them moved for a few moments.

The sounds from the surrounding forest still echoed within the deeper trees but were otherwise completely silent.

Archie let out a slow breath.

"That one was tougher than the rest."

Seraphine nodded, but her gaze was already fixed back toward the forest.

"We can't stay here."

Archie followed her gaze again. The sounds from the surrounding woods had not died down; if anything, they were growing louder.

"Deeper into the forest?" he asked.

"Yes."

Archie frowned slightly, "Wouldn't that be where all this is coming from?"

"Exactly why we have to go check it."

Without waiting any longer, Seraphine continued moving into the trees. Archie stayed close behind her.

As they walked deeper into the forest, things seemed to become stranger and stranger. Monster nests were left empty throughout the path; large pits were dug into the earth, scattering bones across the ground, and clawed dens, which normally teemed with vicious predators, were now empty and silent.

Everything had been moved out.

Archie knelt by one of the nests, studying the gouges carved into the surrounding trees by the massive claws.

"These creatures were driven away by another monster," he murmured.

Seraphine nodded. "Not just that, something has called them away."

They continued on their way. In the deeper parts of the forest, everything was in disarray. The trees were covered in broken branches, and huge claws carved deep scars into their bark. It wasn't just animals that had been forced to flee their homes; it was as if entire areas had been transplanted.

Archie finally spoke again, "Do you think something has awoken and drawn all these monsters to it?"

Seraphine slowed slightly. "That is the only explanation that seems logical."

"And whatever it is," Archie continued, "it's likely related to the vampires, right?"

Seraphine didn't answer for a moment, but he saw the tension in her expression. "Yes."

They continued walking, and eventually the sunlight completely disappeared behind the canopy of leaves.

Darkness began to fall, and as it did, shapes began moving in between the trees. One after another, pairs of eyes began to appear in the darkness.

One pair, then another, then dozens.

Archie's grip on his sword tightened.

"We're not alone anymore, we need to find shelter."

More eyes appeared in the darkness, watching them, waiting.

The monsters didn't stop appearing until they reached the ruins. The structure had probably been standing for centuries. Broken pillars made of stone stood like ancient sentinels, draped in vines and moss, forming a circle of walls with some protection from the outside world.

Seraphine led the way inside, her eyes scanning the shadows for threats. "We can hold out here until morning."

Archie leaned his sword against one of the pillars and slumped onto the ground. The silence of the forest was unnerving after the continuous barrage of noises. Exhaustion was beginning to overwhelm him.

"You said that whatever it is," Archie said, after a while, "something has awoken?"

Seraphine leaned against one of the old pillars, "Yes."

"Have you felt something like this before?"

"Not exactly. Vampires have existed for thousands of years, Archie, and in that time... Things have occurred. Wars, ancient beings are reawakened, powerful entities battle each other for dominance."

Archie chuckled slightly. "Your history books are far more exciting than the ones I learned from."

Seraphine looked at him, "You grew up far away from the vampire world."

"Yes of course. Before all this, I was nothing but an orphaned human."

"Yes."

Archie leaned back against the cold stone of the ruin wall. "My own past isn't quite as... Glorious as yours. I spent most of my life just trying to survive, moving from one orphanage to another, it was a remarkably boring life. Nothing like this has ever happened before."

Seraphine watched him. "Yet you adapt remarkably quickly."

Archie shrugged, "I guess I'm just stubborn."

"No," Seraphine corrected her voice sharp. "There's more to it than that."

Archie raised his eyebrows. "Are you still talking about that weird feeling you got off me earlier?"

"Yes." Seraphine crossed her arms, "During your training today, and during the fight, I felt a power stir within you which i feel you know about but unwilling to use it in my presence."

Archie looked at his hands. "I didn't feel anything."

"If you don't want to tell me say it, no need to lie to me."

The conversation lulled as fatigue began to take its toll. For a few moments, the strange chaos of the outside world seemed to recede.

Then the forest began to speak again. At first, it was just a distant rumble, but the sound grew steadily louder.

Archie slowly lifted his head.

Seraphine's eyes narrowed.

Hundreds, no, thousands of footsteps hammered against the ground. A veritable army was marching through the woods, all of them headed in the same direction.

Suddenly, without any warning, a creature burst through one of the walls of the ruins, sending stones flying everywhere. Archie was already on his feet. More creatures poured into the ruins, wolves, crawling things, winged shadows swooping from above.

But the difference this time was that they were randomly attacking. They were moving in waves.

The first wave rushed them, forcing Archie and Seraphine into a desperate battle for survival. As the first wave fell, a second wave would flood into the ruins behind them. Archie's sword moved like a blur, carving through flesh and claw, and his training at the hands of Seraphine had already paid off. He was faster, sharper, and more precise.

A wolf sprang from the side, and Archie caught it in mid-air, slamming it into the ground with a surge of strength he didn't even know he possessed. Seraphine noticed it though. Her eyes narrowed in concentration as another creature charged Archie from behind. Before it could reach him, Archie spun, batting the monster aside with a single blow that sent it crashing into the stone wall of the ruins.

The battle raged until the first light of dawn filtered through the trees.

The creatures slowly stopped coming. The forest grew quiet once more. Archie leaned heavily on his sword, panting for air. Seraphine stepped out of the ruins and looked down toward the hills. Archie followed her gaze. He froze. The entire forest below them was moving. A river of thousands of creatures flowed through the trees; wolves, winged beasts, crawling monsters. They were all moving toward one destination: the city.
