The conversation that took place next was brief and ended in no time.
Detective Mulligan then narrated how the conversation progressed to his partner, Detective Mariya Johannes.
She paid close attention and dared not breathe too loudly, worried that she would miss even the tiniest detail related to this case.
Once he disclosed everything, both the detectives sat in silence, taking in all of the information they had just received.
"So basically, we are back to square one?" Mariya sighed, as this phone call had been of no use to their investigation, according to her.
However, Sam did not feel the same way, as he had sensed something during his conversation with the Commissioner of the city Nita had been living in.
"It felt as though he was appalled at the very thought of us doubting Anita Valken..." He expressed his thoughts aloud, causing his partner to fix her attention back on him.
"And it wasn't just him..." He continued, leaning against his seat as he disclosed how he felt about this case and his interaction with the Tuskar brothers earlier today.
"The way both the men spoke about her... It is almost as if they are confident she would never do anything to hurt her brother." He concluded with a sigh, as this made things complicated.
If the two brothers weren't enough, even his superior seemed to think the same way.
Not just the commissioner of their city, but one from another country altogethe,r was vouching for Anita Valken's character, both assuring that she was innocent.
"What if both of them are involved in this crime and are just speaking in her favor to cover up their tracks?" Mariya's doubt dragged him out of his thoughts and he soon shot her a warning look.
The words she had uttered were spoken in the safety of this conference room where it was just the two of them.
However, if she accidentally blurted out such nonsense before someone who did not have good intentions in mind, it would be hard to say if she would be able to keep her job.
Realizing what she had just said, Mariya slapped her palm over her mouth to keep it shut.
However, she was not wrong in what she had just said, as even Sam had that same thought, but he was smart enough never to say it out loud.
After all, he could not just take their word for it and hence chose to follow through with his investigation.
"Let's get in touch with Miss Valken tomorrow." He announced as he rose from his seat.
"Where are you heading now?" Mariya called out when she saw him walk toward the door.
Pausing at the door, Sam turned around and shot her a quick smile.
"The courthouse to get a warrant." He revealed and soon slipped out of the room, leaving her behind to mull over what he had just said.
It took Mariya a second to realize what he had in mind and she chuckled, as he always made it a point to be one step ahead of his opponent.
'It will be interesting to meet that bratty lady tomorrow~!' She snickered, shaking her head and excited to see how things would unfold tomorrow.
In a country far away from Metro K City, where Nita had returned just today...
"Thank you, Mr. Silverstone. Your hard work will not be forgotten..." A saccharine sweet voice echoed in the otherwise silent room.
An old man sitting behind a large oakwood desk rolled his eyes and was thankful that he was wearing a full-sleeved uniform, which helped conceal the goosebumps that had risen after listening to the other person's voice.
"I did it for Anita, so you do not have anything to thank me for." He retorted, unwilling to accept credit for something he was not a part of.
"Sure, sure~ Whatever makes you feel better about it~" The same voice spoke again, reviving the goosebumps which had almost settled.
The old man behind the desk was the Commissioner, with whom Detective Sam Mulligan had just conversed.
Whereas the person sitting opposite him was someone who should be nowhere near the Police headquarters, given their true identity.
However, neither of them was worried about the consequences of their current actions as they sat in this office room, trying to gauge each other's stance in the matter at hand.
Silence engulfed the room once again as they simply stared at each other, both displaying no intention of breaking first.
"I really hope that she wasn't involved in her brother's disappearance..." The old man finally caved in and spoke first because their conversation would go nowhere if they just sat there staring at each other all day long.
The moment these words left his mouth, he felt a shift in the air and a suffocating sensation filled his chest, making it difficult for him to even breathe.
"You already know my darling would never hurt a fly." The man opposite him, dressed in an all-black three-piece suit, replied in a grim and low voice, sounding nothing like when he had first spoken.
There was such finality in his tone that it almost made the old man believe those words.
However, when he thought of the ruckus Anita Valken had caused in her initial days of relocating to this city, he knew that those were just this man's delusional thoughts about her and nothing more.
Regardless of whether or not he believed those words, he was not foolish enough to go against this man, especially when those golden eyes were now shining dangerously bright as they peered at him, almost as if they were gazing into his soul.
Therefore, Commissioner Silverstone cleared his throat and raised his hands in defeat.
"Then why would you ask me to make the investigation difficult for that detective?" He shot out another question, cleverly diverting the man's attention from his previous statement.
Soon those bright eyes returned to their normal, yet still frightening state, and the air in the room loosened, allowing the old man to breathe with ease once again.
"Oh, that? I just do not want some outsider to know about the time my love spent with me all these years~" The sickeningly sweet voice returned, as though that grim voice had never belonged to him in the first place.
Witnessing how his tone and voice kept changing constantly, the old man could feel a throbbing pain originating in his head, and he hoped this unwelcome meeting would end soon.
"Don't worry, I don't think that human detective will reach out again." The Commissioner revealed, as he had done a good job of reminding the detective of the difficulties he would face if he continued on the path he had chosen.
While he did feel a pang of guilt for trying to hinder an ongoing investigation as a fellow policeman, he quickly reminded himself that this was not a case he was supposed to care about.
After all, this was a cross-border incident which was way out of his jurisdiction and there was not much he could do to assist without making this an international conflict between the two countries, which was the last thing he wished to be a part of.
Therefore, when this man had reached out to him earlier, informing him that he would receive a call from a detective across the border, he was mentally prepared for what needed to be done.
'Though I wish that stupid man Osbourne had given me a headsup instead!' He scoffed when he thought of that other old man who also held a Commissioner's position in a different country.
However, instead of reaching out to him directly, that old man Mikhayel Osbourne had thought it was best to involve this menace who was now hijacking his office and his afternoon.
Not knowing how to send him away, Commissioner Silverstone prayed that someone would come to his rescue and help him get rid of this psychotic and unpredictable young man as one could never guess what he was up to.
'I wonder what devious plan he is coming up with now...' The old man feared that he would get roped into something unnecessary against his will once again if that man stayed here any longer.
