Chapter 79 - The Mother’s Shield

The battlefield beneath the high ridge had turned into an absolute meat grinder. Princess Vaelora, mounted on her radiant starlight Luminar, was cutting through the enemy lines with lethal precision, but the sheer weight of numbers was starting to show. The combined forces of Mordaen and Tharzakir, realizing that the newly crowned Queen was out in the open, began to converge on her position like a swarm of starving locusts.

Massive iron-clad infantrymen with heavy, jagged halberds formed a suffocating wall around her, cutting off her path to the ridge where Azeal was charging. Every time Vaelora's Midnight Daggers slashed a throat or her starlight magic blasted a front rank away, ten more soldiers took their place. Her Luminar horse let out a strained, exhausted neigh, its burning hooves kicking up mud and blood as it tried to hold its ground against a forest of incoming spears.

"Protect the usurper's prize!" a Mordaen general screamed, raising a massive spiked mace. "Bring down the Queen!"

Before the mace could descend upon Vaelora, a streak of brilliant silver steel flashed through the dark air.

SLASH!

The general's arm was severed mid-air, and his weapon fell uselessly into the mud. Galloping into the fray on a towering silver stallion came Lady Seraphine Draven.

Seraphine looked magnificent, a true warrior-matriarch of Solthera. Her ancient armor, etched with the defensive runes of the House of Draven, glowed with a fierce, protective light. Her face was smeared with soot, but her eyes carried an unyielding, maternal fury that struck terror into the hearts of the surrounding soldiers. She wielded a massive dual-bladed glaive, spinning it with such terrifying speed that it became a blur of lethal silver wind.

"Get away from my daughter!" Seraphine's voice boomed, echoing across the chaotic melee.

With a powerful sweep of her glaive, she decapitated three Mordaen infantrymen in a single fluid motion. She pulled her horse right alongside Vaelora's Luminar, her shield deflecting a volley of dark, poisoned arrows that had been aimed directly at Vaelora's exposed side.

"Mom!" Vaelora gasped, her voice cracking with a mixture of relief and intense fear. To Vaelora, Seraphine wasn't just a lord's wife or a military commander; she was the woman who had protected her in the shadows, the one who had filled the void of the mother she had lost as a child.

"Do not stop, Vaelora!" Seraphine commanded, her eyes locked on the heavy infantry closing the gap behind them. She parried a spear thrust from a Tharzakir brute, shattered his visor with the butt of her glaive, and drove the blade deep into his chest. "Azeal is heading straight into Draeven's trap on the ridge. He is blinded by rage, and he will not survive alone. You must reach him!"

"But they are surrounding you!" Vaelora cried out, her Midnight Daggers pulsing with a desperate gold light as she deflected an axe aimed at Seraphine's mount. "I won't leave you behind!"

"You are not leaving me, you are leading us!" Seraphine yelled back, her voice full of fierce pride and unconditional love. She looked at the heavy crown resting upon Vaelora's head. "Look at yourself, Vaelora. You are the rightful blood. You are the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Your destiny isn't to die in this mud fighting foot soldiers. Your destiny is up on that ridge!"

A fresh wave of elite Zhalver shadow-guards, armed with heavy broadswords and dark-infused shields, rushed toward them, completely blocking the path up the mountain.

Seraphine's face hardened. She knew their time was running out. She reached out, her armored hand briefly touching Vaelora's cheek with absolute tenderness amidst the slaughter. "Let your mother be your shield one last time, my sweet girl."

Before Vaelora could protest, Seraphine let out a warrior's battle cry. She dug her spurs into her horse and charged directly into the thickest, most dangerous cluster of the enemy army. Her glaive became a vortex of destruction, carving a brutal, bloody corridor straight through the Zhalver shadow-guards. She was intentionally drawing all the attention, all the blades, and all the dark sorcery toward herself, sacrificing her own safety to force open a path for her foster daughter.

"Go, Vaelora! RUN!" Seraphine screamed over her shoulder as she parried three swords at once, her armor sparking violently under the strain.

Tears blurred Vaelora's vision, but she knew Seraphine was right. Gritting her teeth, she channeled the last of her Luminar's energy. The starlight horse bolted forward into the opening Seraphine had so bravely carved, tearing past the distracted enemy lines and heading straight up the steep, rocky incline of the ridge.

Behind her, the sound of clashing steel grew more desperate, and Vaelora could hear Seraphine's fierce war cries echoing from the center of the dark swarm, holding the line against an entire army.
