Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: The Imperial Contract

The silver doors did not merely swing open; they were violently uncoupled from their stone mounts by a massive hydraulic piston driven from within the inner sanctuary. The dented sheets of silver plate tore free, crashing outward onto the white marble floor with a deafening weight that missed Lin Hao's prostrate form by mere inches.

Out of the darkness of the inner chamber rolled the Imperial Coal-Regent, Lord Cao.

He was a grotesque, towering synthesis of human flesh and heavy, state-level engineering. His lower body was entirely missing, replaced by a massive, tracked locomotive chassis of riveted black iron plate that ground across the white floorboards. The heavy metal treads let out a rhythmic, metallic clack-clack-clack, crushing the fallen crystal shards of the skylights into a fine grey powder.

His torso was encased in a multi-chambered industrial firebox that burned a dense, violet-tinted Imperial Anthracite. Two heavy exhaust stacks, mounted directly onto his iron shoulder blades, vented a thick, oily cloud of silver soot that curled toward the vaulted ceiling, instantly choking out the last remnants of the synthetic jasmine scent.

[Core Profile: 5-Star 'Sovereign Anthracite' Firebox]

[System Notice: Target operates as a direct line-node to the 'Bureau of Noon' regional distribution network.]

"A broken meter," Lord Cao spoke.

The sound did not use vocal cords; it was an acoustic roar that sounded like a steam whistle blown inside an enclosed iron vault, vibrating the fillings in Lin Hao's teeth. The iron door of his chest firebox cracked open by an inch, revealing a core of blinding, white-hot slag that cast long, predatory orange shadows across the ruined vestibule.

"Lin Hao, your accounting has failed," the Regent continued, the iron tracks shifting with a sharp hydraulic hiss. "The 1-Star discard has decoupled the entire lower sector from our tax line. The Imperial Train does not tolerate a ledger with an empty column. If the branch disciples will not vent their marrow, the main house must be liquidated to balance the register."

Lin Hao scrambled to his feet, his fingers slick with dark oil as he retrieved his cracked Regulating Staff. The silver turbine inside his chest was wheezing now, its rhythm erratic and weak. "Regent... the anomaly is bypassing the physical infrastructure. He has no registered core. Give me twenty minutes to engage the central bypass, and I will purge the sub-level manually—"

"The Bureau does not trade in minutes, Steam-Sovereign," Lord Cao roared.

The three high-pressure steam cannons mounted on his left shoulder chassis turned with a heavy, mechanical whine, their brass barrels locking directly onto Lin Wei's chest.

"The Bureau only trades in terms. And your lease has just been terminated."

The cannons hissed—a split-second of high-pitched warning before a volley of five-hundred-degree, superheated diesel condensation erupted from the barrels. The white-hot plume hit the cold air of the vestibule with the force of an exploding boiler, instantly turning the entire floor into a blind, screaming cloud of killing steam that dissolved the marble finish on impact.

Lin Wei stood at the center of the white-out, his charcoal-violet blade held low, his single purple eye staring straight through the boiling fog toward the glowing white furnace of the Regent's chest. The air in his stone-locked lungs was completely still.
