Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Thirst Within

The tremors began subtly, a faint shiver that ran through him like a cold wind.

Then, they intensified, morphing into violent spasms that wracked his body, leaving him gasping and weak.

The thirst… it was a living thing, a parasitic entity that had taken root within him, demanding sustenance with relentless ferocity.

He curled tighter against the cold stone, his teeth chattering, his muscles cramping.

The images of the woman and child haunted him, their terrified faces accusing him of weakness, of failure.

He should have helped them. He should have fought. But he couldn't.

He was too weak, too afraid.

But his failures were only making the hunger worst.

Each tear that rolled down his cheek felt like acid, burning his skin. No... he had to make a change.

Days blurred into a nightmarish cycle of pain, hunger, and despair. He scavenged for scraps in the refuse piles, competing with rats and stray dogs for scraps of rotting food.

Anything to distract from the overwhelming need for blood.

But it was useless. The hunger gnawed at him, a constant reminder of his monstrous nature.

He tried to sleep, but sleep offered no escape.

His dreams were filled with vivid images of crimson rivers, of screaming faces, of himself, a monstrous figure with burning red eyes, feasting on the living.

He would wake up screaming, his body drenched in cold sweat, the thirst even more intense than before.

He saw other vampires in the slums, their faces hardened by years of hardship and survival.

They were ruthless, brutal, and utterly indifferent to the suffering of others. They hunted in packs, preying on the weak and vulnerable, their faces contorted with feral hunger.

He avoided them, clinging to the last vestiges of his humanity. But he knew it was only a matter of time before he succumbed.

The thirst was relentless, and his will was weakening with each passing day.

One night, driven to the brink of madness, he found himself drawn to the edge of the slums, towards the dimly lit streets where the wealthy vampires resided.

He knew it was dangerous, that he would be killed if he was caught, but the hunger had become unbearable, a living fire that consumed his very being.

He crept through the shadows, his senses on high alert, his heart pounding in his chest.

He could smell the blood, rich and potent, wafting from the opulent mansions that lined the streets.

He saw humans, well-fed and well-dressed, moving through the streets, oblivious to the danger that lurked in the shadows.

He stalked a young man, his eyes gleaming with predatory hunger.

He was young, strong, and radiated an aura of vitality that made Tokoyami's mouth water.

He followed him down a dark alleyway, his fangs aching, his body trembling with anticipation.

He lunged, his hand clamping down on the young man's mouth, stifling his scream. He sank his teeth into his neck, the taste of blood exploding on his tongue.

It was exquisite, intoxicating, a wave of pure pleasure washing over him.

He drank deeply, ravenously, the hunger finally beginning to subside.

The young man struggled, his body convulsing, but Tokoyami held him tight, his grip fueled by desperate need.

He drank until the young man was limp and lifeless, his blood staining the cobblestones.

He staggered back, his body trembling, his mind reeling. He had done it. He had crossed the line.

He was a monster now.

He looked down at his hands, stained with blood, and a wave of nausea washed over him.

He had become everything he had feared, everything he had sworn to fight against.

But as he looked down at his hand, a glow was eminating from the palm. His heart started to beat louder as text materialized into his mind.
