Chapter 46 - Hey, Put me down now...

Zhou Yiran didn't slow when she stepped out of the car. The building in front of her stood quiet too quiet for a place that clearly hadn't been abandoned. There were no obvious signs of movement, no visible guards, no noise leaking out into the open air. But that didn't mean it was empty. If anything, the stillness made it feel more deliberate.

She pushed the door open and stepped inside. The shift was immediate. Sound dulled. The outside world cut off like a switch had been flipped. What remained inside wasn't silence it was something tighter. Controlled. Like everything here had been arranged to leave nothing behind.

Her gaze moved slowly across the space. Nothing looked out of place at first glance. Surfaces were clean. There wasn't even the kind of scattered neglect abandoned places usually carried. No dust layering corners. No forgotten items. Just… absence.

" You cleared everything," she murmured under her breath. Her footsteps were soft, steady as she moved deeper inside. Every step was measured, but her mind was already ahead, working through everything that had brought her here. The guard, timing , pattern. The way everything had been too precise to be coincidence.

Her fingers brushed lightly along the edge of a table as she passed, her attention catching on something subtle. A faint mark. Not obvious. Not meant to be. She stopped.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she leaned closer. " But not perfectly." A faint exhale left her as her fingers hovered just above the surface, not quite touching it again." You rushed this part," she said quietly, almost as if speaking to whoever had been here before her. "Or you didn't think anyone would look this closely." Her gaze shifted slightly, tracing the line of the mark, following where it ended.

" Which means you were confident," she continued under her breath. " Or careless."

She straightened slowly, her expression sharpening as her thoughts aligned.

"Confident people don't erase everything," she murmured. "They leave just enough."

A pause followed as her eyes moved across the room again, more focused now, more deliberate. " So this isn't just cleanup," she added softly. " This is a message." Her lips pressed together faintly as she stepped forward again, her pace slower now, more intentional. " The question is," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, " who was it meant for?" She stopped again after a few steps, her head tilting slightly as if listening not to a sound, but to the absence of one.

" And why does it feel like I walked into it exactly the way you wanted?" Her fingers curled slightly at her side, a quiet tension settling into her posture. " If this was meant to hide something," she continued, her tone lowering, "then it's too clean." A brief pause.

" And if it's meant to show something " Her gaze hardened just a fraction. " then I'm already late."

She let out a slow breath, her eyes scanning the space once more, sharper now, searching for anything that didn't belong.

" Fine," she said quietly. " Then let's see what you actually left behind." Her steps resumed, steady, unhesitating but this time, every movement carried awareness.

A faint breath left her as she moved further in, her gaze sharper now, more focused. If this place was connected then she wasn't outside of it. " I was already part of this," she murmured, her voice low. " Before I even realized it." "Wow." The voice came from behind her. Zhou Yiran turned instantly, her posture shifting in a fraction of a second.

" You figured that out fast." Her expression didn't change when she saw him. "Kaiwen."

He stood a few steps away, hands casually tucked into his pockets, looking entirely too relaxed for where they were. Like he'd just walked into a café instead of a hidden location tied to something far from simple.

He smiled faintly. "I was starting to think you'd ignore my calls forever. This is a nice change." "Why are you here?" she asked flatly. "Ouch," he said, placing a hand over his chest in mock offense. "No 'nice to see you'? No appreciation for my dedication?"

"You didn't answer."

Kaiwen exhaled softly, dropping the act just slightly. " You called me. 'I need information.' That doesn't sound like something I should ignore." Her gaze didn't waver. "You got here before me." "Of course I did," he said easily. "You think I'd let you walk into something like this without checking it first?"

"I didn't ask you to come." "And I didn't ask you to walk into something dangerous alone," he replied, the lightness in his tone thinning just enough to reveal something more serious underneath.

A pause stretched between them.

Then she turned slightly, dismissing the point entirely. "What did you find?" Kaiwen studied her for a second, then sighed quietly. "Straight to business. You've gotten worse."

"Answer." " This place," he said, glancing around briefly, "isn't just some random site. It's been used for monitoring."

"I figured that much."

"Targeted monitoring," he added.

Her eyes shifted back to him. " Who?"

"That's where it gets complicated," he said.

She didn't move. "Explain."

Kaiwen hesitated not long, but enough.

" It's not clean," he said finally. "This isn't one side watching another. There are overlaps. Different people. Different directions."

" Layered," she murmured.

"Exactly." Silence followed. Her thoughts moved quickly, connecting pieces, aligning them into something sharper. "That means," she said slowly, ".whoever set this up wasn't working alone." "Or they didn't trust anyone enough to rely on one side," Kaiwen added.

A faint pause. "There's more," he said.

Her gaze sharpened instantly. " Say it."

He looked at her, something in his expression shifting slightly. " Some of the movement patterns I traced," he said, quieter now, " they weren't random either." " Get to the point."

"They were centered," he continued.

A pause. " Around you."

The words settled into the space between them. Zhou Yiran didn't react immediately. Her expression remained composed, but her mind moved faster, sharper. " I thought so," she said quietly. Kaiwen blinked once. "That's it? No shock? No dramatic reaction?"

"No," she replied. " Just confirmation."

He frowned slightly. "You're taking this too calmly." "I'm taking it correctly," she said.

A brief silence followed. Her gaze drifted slightly, her thoughts narrowing into something more focused. " So I wasn't outside of this," she murmured. " I was already in it." Kaiwen watched her carefully. "You don't look surprised." "I'm not," she said. "I'm late." That made him pause.

" You're not planning to step back," he said.

She glanced at him. " Were you?" Kaiwen huffed quietly. "I was hoping you would say yes so I could pretend to agree." "Then pretend." she replied. " You're impossible."

"And you're still here."

A faint smile touched his lips, but it didn't last long. " You know this isn't small," he said.

"I know."

"You know this could turn dangerous."

"I know."

" And you're still staying." She looked at him, her gaze steady. "Yes."

The answer didn't waver. Kaiwen exhaled slowly. " You really don't make this easy."

"You could leave."

"And let you stay?" He shook his head. "Not happening." Before she could respond She stilled completely. Kaiwen noticed instantly. " What?" Her gaze shifted slightly toward the far side of the room. " We're not alone."

Kaiwen's posture straightened just slightly, his tone lowering. " Yeah. I was starting to think that." they were footsteps sound.

" We should go," he said quietly.

Zhou Yiran didn't move. "No." He looked at her. " This isn't curiosity anymore."

"I know."

"Then why "

"Because if I leave now," she said, her voice steady, " I go back to not knowing."

A pause. " And I'm done with that."

The footsteps stopped silence again.

Then another sound. Kaiwen's gaze flicked toward the entrance.

Meanwhile Zhang Weiyu didn't waste time after leaving the mansion. The moment he stepped into the car, the atmosphere inside shifted into something sharper, more restrained. Xu Shen followed immediately, closing the door behind him, already pulling up the data stream on his device. The silence between them wasn't empty it was compressed, like both of them understood there was no room for unnecessary words.

For a few seconds, only the sound of navigation systems and faint transmission updates filled the car. Xu Shen scanned the first wave of results, his expression tightening slightly. " Standard locations checked," he said carefully. " No trace of her movement pattern matches any of the usual exits or monitored routes." Zhang Weiyu didn't respond immediately. His gaze stayed forward, unmoving, but the tension in his jaw was already visible. " Check again," he said flatly. "I already did," Xu Shen replied, keeping his tone controlled. " I expanded the scan range. Nothing consistent. It's like she deliberately avoided every known surveillance corridor."

That finally made Zhang Weiyu turn slightly toward him. " Deliberately?" His voice was calm, but the edge underneath it was unmistakable. Xu Shen hesitated for half a beat before answering. " Yes. Or someone helped her do it." A brief silence followed.

Zhang Weiyu's fingers curled slightly against his armrest. " No one helps her," he said quietly. Xu Shen didn't argue. He simply continued scrolling. " Then she learned how to move without being tracked. Either way, she's not where we expected her to be."

That answer didn't sit well.

Zhang Weiyu exhaled once, controlled, but the patience in it was already thinning. " Broaden it further," he said. "I already did," Xu Shen replied. " If I go any wider, we're stepping into unverified zones. That increases noise, not accuracy." "Do it anyway." Xu Shen paused briefly. " Sir, that will slow the system down significantly."

"I didn't ask about speed." That cut the conversation short.

Xu Shen adjusted immediately, redirecting the search parameters. The system recalibrated, data streams widening, filtering through less controlled channels. The car filled again with soft processing tones.

Zhang Weiyu's gaze remained fixed ahead, but his voice lowered slightly. " She shouldn't be out there alone," he said. Xu Shen glanced up. " She left on her own."

"That doesn't change anything." A brief pause followed.

Xu Shen spoke more carefully now. "Sir… this isn't just about her leaving. The timing matches the Liang movement pattern. It could mean she crossed into active zones."

That made Zhang Weiyu's expression shift slightly subtle, but noticeable. " Active zones," he repeated. "Yes," Xu Shen confirmed. " Areas currently being monitored or adjusted. If she's there, she's not just off-grid. She's inside someone else's operation radius."

A heavier silence followed. Zhang Weiyu's voice dropped. " Then she doesn't understand what she's stepping into."

Xu Shen exhaled lightly. " That's been clear since the beginning." The tension in the car thickened further. For a moment, Zhang Weiyu didn't speak. Then his tone sharpened again, more direct. " Any sign of movement trace overlap?" Xu Shen's fingers paused briefly over the screen. " There is partial alignment," he said slowly. " But it's fragmented. Like multiple sources are intersecting in one point." " Where," Zhang Weiyu asked immediately. Xu Shen hesitated. " Not confirmed yet. But if I had to isolate the strongest correlation " He paused again, narrowing the data feed. " It points toward one of the secondary monitored sites near the outer perimeter zones."

That made Zhang Weiyu go still. " Which one," he said again, slower now. Xu Shen finally looked up fully. " The abandoned surveillance-linked property in the west sector." The moment those words landed, Zhang Weiyu's expression tightened completely. " That place," he said quietly.

Xu Shen nodded once. "Yes. It matches the residual patterns from the Liang activity logs." Zhang Weiyu didn't hesitate after that. "Turn the car." Xu Shen blinked. " Sir, we still don't have full confirmation." "I didn't ask for confirmation," Zhang Weiyu cut in. " I asked you to turn the car." That ended it.

Xu Shen immediately rerouted the driver. The vehicle shifted direction without slowing.

A brief silence followed before Xu Shen spoke again, more cautiously this time. " If she is there… it won't be safe." Zhang Weiyu's voice was low, controlled. " It was never safe." " Then this is escalating beyond observation," Xu Shen added carefully. " We're no longer tracking movement. We're entering confrontation range." That made Zhang Weiyu finally look at him fully.

" That's exactly why she shouldn't be involved in it," he said.

Xu Shen didn't respond immediately.

Because there was no argument for that.

Still, he spoke after a moment. " She chose to leave." "She didn't choose the consequences," Zhang Weiyu replied.

The car fell into silence again. But it wasn't calm. It was accelerating.

Elsewhere Kaiwen noticed it first. " We're not alone anymore," he said quietly. Zhou Yiran didn't turn her head. " We never were."

"No," he corrected, his tone tightening slightly. " I mean actively present. Someone is here now." That made her finally shift her gaze slightly. " How many," she asked.

Kaiwen didn't answer immediately. His eyes scanned the corners, the entry points, the subtle changes in sound reflection. " At least one confirmed. Maybe more."

Zhou Yiran's expression remained steady. " You sound uncertain." "I am uncertain," he replied. " Because whoever it is, they're not making themselves visible." A brief pause followed. Kaiwen took a slow step closer to her. " We should leave." "No," she said immediately. He sighed under his breath. " Of course not." Zhou Yiran finally looked at him fully. " We came for answers." "And we're getting watched instead," he replied.

"That's still information." Kaiwen gave her a long look. " You really don't stop, do you?"

"Not until I understand," she said.

He exhaled slowly. " That's exactly what worries me."

Another faint shift in the air followed.

Kaiwen's posture changed instantly. " There," he muttered. " Movement." Zhou Yiran turned slightly. " Where."

"Upper left sector," he said quietly. " Not close enough to engage yet, but close enough to observe us clearly." She didn't react with surprise. Only focus sharpened.

" Let them observe," she said. Kaiwen frowned. " That's not how this works."

"It is now." A pause. " You're trying to bait them," he said slowly. "I'm trying to see what they want."

Kaiwen lowered his voice further. " And if what they want is you?" Zhou Yiran's gaze didn't shift. " Then I'll find out why."

That answer didn't satisfy him. " You're putting yourself in the center of something you don't fully understand," he said.

"I already am," she replied. Kaiwen looked at her for a moment longer, then exhaled sharply. " You and that man are more alike than you realize." She didn't respond to that.

Because the word "that man" didn't need clarification.

Kaiwen had just finished speaking when the atmosphere shifted again this time more abruptly and violently. A faint metallic sound cut through the stillness, followed by another sharp click. His expression changed instantly, his playful tone vanishing as his eyes sharpened. "We're not alone," he muttered. Zhou Yiran didn't move, but her gaze shifted toward the entrance. "I know," she replied quietly.

Moments later, footsteps followed multiple, heavy, and coordinated. Kaiwen instinctively stepped slightly in front of her. "That's not just one or two people," he said under his breath. Zhou Yiran's voice remained calm. "I can hear." Then they appeared: first three figures, then more behind them. Dark clothing, controlled movements, and guns already raised. The air changed instantly.

Kaiwen exhaled softly. "This just got annoying." Zhou Yiran didn't react. "Stay behind me," she said. He glanced at her. "I was literally already doing that."

The armed men stopped a few steps away, weapons aimed directly at them. One spoke coldly, ordering them to step away from her. Kaiwen tilted his head slightly. "That's rude. You didn't even say hello first," he muttered, but the man ignored him and repeated the command for both of them to move away from the target. Zhou Yiran narrowed her eyes slightly. "Target?" Another man shifted his aim toward her. "You are not supposed to be here."

Kaiwen sighed. "Yeah, that's usually what people say before things go badly." Zhou Yiran stepped forward instead of back and asked calmly, "Who sent you?" There was no answer. The man in front tightened his grip on the weapon. "Last warning." Kaiwen muttered, "I really don't like last warnings. They're always so dramatic." Zhou Yiran didn't back down. "You won't get an answer unless you stop pointing guns at us." That was when the tension snapped.

A shot fired not at them, but into the air as a warning. The sound echoed sharply through the space. Kaiwen immediately grabbed her wrist. "Okay, no more talking," he said, but Zhou Yiran still didn't retreat. Instead, she moved sideways. "Why are you moving toward them?" Kaiwen asked, but she simply replied, "Because they already decided." Another shot fired, this time closer. Kaiwen clicked his tongue. "That's it."

He pulled her behind cover just as another bullet struck nearby, and the space erupted into chaos. Gunfire cracked through the air as Zhou Yiran scanned their surroundings. "They're spreading out," she said quickly. Kaiwen peeked out once and immediately pulled back. "Yeah, they're not here to negotiate." A shot hit the wall beside them, dust scattering. "I vote we leave," he said. "No," she replied immediately. "Of course you don't," he muttered.

They moved quickly, narrowly avoiding gunfire. Kaiwen pulled her through a narrow gap while she instinctively redirected his movement when he nearly stepped into danger. "You've done this before," he muttered. "I adapt," she replied. "That's a terrifying answer," he said. Another shot came closer, and Kaiwen pushed her down instinctively but it was too late. A bullet grazed his shoulder.

He froze for a moment. "Ah," he said quietly before staggering. "Okay, that one actually hurt a bit." Zhou Yiran turned sharply. "Kaiwen!" Blood began to seep through his sleeve as he tried to straighten. "Okay," he muttered, forcing a weak smile, "that one actually hurt a bit." She grabbed his arm immediately. "Don't move." He tried to joke lightly. "I was planning to sit down politely, don't worry." She didn't respond. "You're bleeding," she said firmly. "I noticed," he replied.

Another shot forced them to duck again. Zhou Yiran's voice sharpened. "Can you stand?" He tried, failed slightly, and leaned against the wall. "Define stand," he said weakly. Her expression tightened. "This isn't funny." "I know," he said softly. More gunfire echoed, and then Kaiwen exhaled. "Okay, new plan. We really leave now."

Zhou Yiran supported him fully. "Can you move?" "Barely," he admitted. Her gaze dropped briefly to the blood. "This is my fault." Kaiwen let out a short laugh. "What are you talking about?" She didn't look away. "They came because of me." "Yeah," he said, still trying to sound casual, "and I came because of you. That doesn't mean you get emotional about it."

She tightened her grip on his hand. "You're injured." "I've had worse," he said. "You're bleeding," she repeated. "And still alive," he added. "You shouldn't be joking," she said. He tilted his head slightly toward her. "And you shouldn't be standing in the middle of a shooting match like you're reviewing paperwork."

She paused for half a second before lightly tapping his shoulder, careful to avoid the wound. "Stop talking." He winced slightly, then smirked faintly. "That's mean." "You're distracting," she said. "Good," he replied softly. "Means I'm still useful." Her expression softened just slightly, though she didn't fully show it. "You have too many things to do for me." Kaiwen blinked, then let out a soft laugh despite the pain. "Oh wow. That's the nicest insult I've ever received." "It's not an insult," she said. "Sounds like one," he replied.

The gunfire outside gradually faded, shifting away as if reorganizing. Then suddenly, silence fell. They were gone. Kaiwen frowned slightly. "That's not normal." Zhou Yiran stayed alert. "They didn't retreat randomly." He nodded faintly. "Yeah. That felt like a message."

She turned to him. "Can you walk?" Kaiwen straightened slightly. "I can dramatically limp, if that counts." She didn't wait. She pulled his arm over her shoulder. "Hey," he muttered, "you're stronger than you look." "Focus," she said. "Yes, boss," he replied.

They moved slowly as he leaned on her. Kaiwen glanced sideways. "You okay?" She didn't answer immediately, then quietly said, "It's all because of me." He frowned. "Don't start that." Her grip tightened. "If you weren't here " "I'd still be here," he cut in. "And I'd still get shot doing something stupid."

She paused. He forced a faint grin. "So technically, this is my lifestyle choice." She looked at him. "You really don't take anything seriously." "I do," he said softly, "just not in a way that helps panic." A beat passed, then she tapped his arm again gentler this time. "Don't die," she said quietly. Kaiwen laughed breathily. "What are you saying? I'm not dying." She frowned. "You're injured." "And still annoying," he replied.

That made her exhale faintly, almost a controlled laugh. "Good," she said. Kaiwen glanced at her. "Good?" "You still have things to do," she said simply. He smiled weakly. "That sounds suspiciously like you're ordering me around." "I am." "Yeah," he murmured, "I figured."

Despite everything, a small silence settled between them less tense now, more grounded as they continued forward. Kaiwen leaned slightly heavier against her and said softly, "You know, you're not as cold as you act." Zhou Yiran didn't respond, but she didn't deny it either.

The moment Zhang Weiyu and Xu Shen arrived, the atmosphere shifted again heavier this time, sharper, as if the air itself had been pulled taut. Xu Shen slowed slightly the second he stepped out of the car, his eyes scanning the scene before him. He didn't need anyone to explain what he was seeing. Kaiwen injured, leaning weakly, and Zhou Yiran supporting him with her full attention already said enough.

Xu Shen's inner thoughts tightened immediately. …Of course. This is exactly what I was afraid of. He glanced at Zhang Weiyu and instantly understood from his expression that the situation had already escalated beyond controlled limits. There was no hesitation in Zhang Weiyu's steps as he moved forward. No assessment. No delay. Just direction.

Zhou Yiran noticed them first. Her posture shifted slightly as her eyes locked onto Zhang Weiyu approaching with Xu Shen behind him. For a fraction of a second, something unreadable passed through her expression not surprise exactly, but something closer to recognition mixed with irritation. " You're here," she said flatly, still supporting Kaiwen.

Kaiwen, half-distracted and clearly in pain, lifted his head slightly. "Oh great," he muttered weakly. "The mood just got worse."

Zhang Weiyu didn't respond to either of them at first. His gaze landed on Kaiwen first sharp, controlled, but undeniably dangerous. Then it moved to Zhou Yiran, and stayed there longer than necessary.

Xu Shen observed silently, his thoughts tense. …This is not just an operation anymore. This is something else entirely.

Zhang Weiyu stepped closer. The distance closed fast. Kaiwen tried to adjust slightly but immediately winced, still leaning against Zhou Yiran. Zhang Weiyu's eyes narrowed at the position, and in the next second, he reached out and grabbed Zhou Yiran's hand firmly. "Let go," Zhou Yiran said instantly, turning toward him. "What are you doing here?" Kaiwen frowned despite the pain. "Hey, what is your behavior?" he said, forcing his voice steady. "You can't just walk in and start grabbing people."

Zhang Weiyu didn't even look at him properly. His grip on Zhou Yiran tightened slightly as his voice dropped, cold and absolute.

"Stay out of this." That was it. No explanation. No elaboration. His gaze flicked to Kaiwen for a brief moment sharp enough to cut through the space between them.

Kaiwen let out a short breath. "Yeah? And who are you to decide that?" That was enough.

Zhang Weiyu's expression darkened instantly. He stepped forward and pulled Zhou Yiran away from Kaiwen without hesitation. Zhou Yiran resisted immediately. "Let go of me," she snapped, pulling her arm back. "I'm not done here." But his grip didn't loosen. "Zhang Weiyu," she said sharply, turning toward him fully now. "What exactly are you doing? Explain yourself." He didn't answer.

Xu Shen, watching from behind, exhaled slowly. …This is going to get very bad very fast. Zhang Weiyu finally spoke, voice low and final. "You're coming with me." Zhou Yiran narrowed her eyes. "I don't take orders like that." Without another word, he guided her toward the car. Kaiwen shifted slightly, trying to step forward, but his injured shoulder stopped him. "Hey are you serious right now?" Zhang Weiyu shot him one last cold look. "Stay out." That was the last warning. Kaiwen clicked his tongue weakly. "Yeah, sure. Like that ever works."

Xu Shen opened the driver's door immediately, his expression tight as he got in. His inner thought didn't calm for even a second. …This is beyond interference now. This is personal. Zhou Yiran was pushed gently but firmly into the back seat. "I said I'm not done." she started, but the door shut before she could finish. Zhang Weiyu got in beside her immediately.

Silence fell inside the car almost instantly.

Kaiwen was left behind, sitting on the ground, exhaling slowly as he leaned back slightly. "That guy really has no social skills," he muttered under his breath, trying to mask the pain with sarcasm. Xu Shen started the car but didn't speak. He only glanced at the rearview mirror once. Inside, Zhang Weiyu was still holding Zhou Yiran's hand. She tried to pull away once. He didn't let go. Zhou Yiran turned toward him, voice controlled but sharp. "What is your problem?" No answer.

"Do you think this is normal?" she continued. "Dragging me away without explanation?"

Still silence.

Her grip tightened slightly. "You don't get to decide where I go." Zhang Weiyu finally spoke, voice low, almost restrained. "You shouldn't have been there." "That's not an answer." "It is," he replied simply. Zhou Yiran exhaled sharply. "You're impossible." The rest of the drive was silent. Only Xu Shen occasionally glanced at them through the mirror, his thoughts heavier with every passing minute. …This is no longer about safety. It's about control. And neither of them is backing down.

When they arrived at the mansion, Zhang Weiyu got out first. Before Zhou Yiran could move on her own, he opened her door and pulled her out. "Let go," she said immediately, but he didn't listen. Instead, without warning, he lifted her. Zhou Yiran froze for a second before struggling. "Put me down are you insane?" No response.

"Zhang Weiyu!" Still nothing.

Xu Shen stepped out slowly, watching the scene unfold with a complicated expression. …I don't even know if I should interfere or pretend I didn't see this. Zhang Weiyu carried her straight toward the entrance. Staff members who saw them quickly looked away, sensing instantly that this was not something to react to.

Zhou Yiran's voice sharpened again. "Are you going to explain anything or just keep doing this?" Silence. Her frustration grew. "You can't just " But he was already moving up the stairs. Step after step he is still carrying her.

Zhou Yiran glared at him. "Put me down right now." No answer. They passed the first landing then the second. Her voice rose slightly. "I'm not a package you can just carry around!" Still nothing. Zhang Weiyu's grip remained firm, steady, unchanging.

And as they reached the upper staircase leading toward his room, Zhou Yiran's resistance didn't stop but neither did he.

The tension between them filled the entire space, heavy and unbroken, as he continued upward without a single word.
