Chapter 144 - One Hundred and Forty Three: A Mother's Last Gift

The Heart Chamber was collapsing.

Golden light and primordial darkness collided violently across the sanctuary while the skies above the Edge of Dawn shattered under the pressure of two ancient powers awakening at once.

And at the center of it all.

Luke was dying.

Golden cracks spread rapidly across his small body as uncontrollable Balance energy surged through him like collapsing stars. Every breath became weaker. Every heartbeat more unstable.

Lucien held him tightly despite the energy tearing through his own arms. Infernal flames desperately wrapped around his son, trying to stabilize him.

But it wasn't enough.

Nothing was enough.

The Heart had accepted Luke completely…

but his body was too young to contain its full awakening.

"DO SOMETHING!" Lucien roared toward the Heart itself.

The ancient core pulsed violently in response, almost uncertain.

Even the Heart did not know how to save the child it had chosen.

The Spirit Guide's silver flames continued surrounding Luke desperately while the Dawn Sentinels fought outside the chamber against waves of primordial corruption flooding deeper into the sanctuary.

Vaelthoros roared in fury from beyond the broken entrance.

The Primordial could feel the Balance awakening fully now.

And it wanted the heir dead before the transformation stabilized.

Then Celestia stepped forward quietly.

And suddenly…

everything inside the chamber seemed to slow.

Luke looked toward her weakly, golden tears slipping down his glowing face.

"Mum…"

Celestia knelt beside him gently despite the raging energy surrounding them. Her expression was calm now.

Too calm.

Lucien immediately recognized it.

And fear entered his eyes instantly.

"No."

Celestia looked at him softly.

"Lucien..."

"No." His voice broke sharply this time. "Don't you dare."

The chamber trembled violently again.

A massive primordial claw burst further through the entrance while the Sentinels screamed battle cries outside. The sanctuary was running out of time.

But Lucien could only see her.

Only her.

After all these years… after grief destroyed him… after finally learning how to be Luke's father…

he was about to lose her again.

Celestia reached toward his face gently.

And for the first time since her death…

Lucien leaned into her touch.

Even though she was only resonance and memory.

Even though she could barely hold form anymore.

"I can stabilize the Heart's energy inside him," she whispered softly.

Lucien's expression twisted painfully.

"At what cost?"

Silence answered first.

Then quietly:

"My resonance."

Luke's eyes widened weakly.

"What does that mean?"

Celestia turned toward him with the gentlest smile imaginable.

"It means I won't be able to stay after this, my little star."

The words shattered him instantly.

"No…" Luke whispered.

The Heart pulsed sorrowfully around them.

Lucien grabbed her wrist desperately.

"There has to be another way."

But deep down…

he already knew there wasn't.

The Spirit Guide lowered its massive head solemnly.

Her resonance carries the same Balance signature that awakened within him. If merged willingly… it could stabilize the transformation.

Lucien looked furious.

"And if it fails?"

Then both of them disappear.

Silence crushed the chamber completely.

Outside, Vaelthoros roared again as primordial corruption shattered more sanctuary defenses.

There was no more time.

Luke shook his head desperately despite barely remaining conscious.

"No… no, I don't want this…"

Celestia immediately held his face gently.

"Listen to me carefully."

Golden tears streamed down Luke's cheeks now.

"I just found you…" he whispered brokenly.

Celestia nearly broke apart emotionally at those words.

For one painful moment…

she looked like she wanted to refuse fate entirely.

Like she wanted nothing more than to stay here with her son forever.

But the sanctuary was collapsing.

The realms were dying.

And Luke still had a future ahead of him.

A future she no longer belonged to.

"You found me," she whispered softly. "And that means you'll never truly lose me again."

Luke cried silently now.

Celestia pressed her forehead gently against his.

"You have your father's strength," she whispered.

Lucien closed his eyes painfully.

"And my heart."

The golden currents around the chamber softened slightly.

Celestia smiled shakily through tears.

"You were never born to carry Balance alone, Luke."

The Heart glowed warmly behind them.

"You were born to remind creation why Balance matters in the first place."

Luke tried grabbing her hand tightly.

"Please don't go…"

The plea nearly destroyed Lucien completely.

Celestia trembled.

Then softly:

"My little star…"

She kissed his forehead gently.

And finally looked toward Lucien.

The two of them stared at each other through endless emotion, grief, love, and unfinished lifetimes.

"I loved you in every version of existence," she whispered.

Lucien's breathing became uneven instantly.

"You still do," he answered hoarsely.

Celestia smiled through tears.

"Always."

Then slowly, she turned toward the Heart of Creation.

The chamber illuminated blindingly gold.

Celestia stepped into the streams of Balance energy surrounding Luke while her resonance body began dissolving into countless glowing fragments of light.

Luke cried out immediately.

"MUM!"

Lucien held him tightly as the transformation began.

Celestia's voice echoed softly through the chamber now not from one place, but everywhere at once.

"Live happily, my little star."

Golden light poured from her directly into Luke's unstable form.

The cracks across his body immediately began healing.

The violent energy calmed.

The Heart pulsed brighter than ever before.

Luke's Balance stabilized completely.

The sanctuary exploded with golden light powerful enough to force Vaelthoros backward for the first time. The Primordial screamed in fury as Balance surged through the city like a reborn dawn.

Inside the chamber, Luke's glowing eyes slowly opened.

Stable.

Alive.

But Celestia…

was fading.

Her form had become translucent now, barely held together by lingering light.

Luke reached toward her desperately.

"Mum…"

Celestia smiled softly one final time.

No fear.

No sadness.

Only love.

Then her eyes shifted toward Lucien.

"Take care of him."

Lucien could not speak.

For the second time in his life…

he watched the woman he loved disappear.

And this time…

he was awake enough to feel every second of it.

Celestia looked back toward Luke one last time.

"My little star…"

Her voice became softer than wind.

"Shine."

she dissolved completely into golden light.

The Heart of Creation pulsed once.

As though mourning her with them.
