Chapter 196 - Chapter 196: The Fire Miracle

Against the Three-Tailed Sky Demon, Liang was broken.

He lay on the board, a shattered figure in a spreading pool of his own blood. The Sky Demon placed a clawed foot on Liang's head, pressing his face against the cold, magical surface. It looked down with pure, pitiless mockery.

"Of all the opponents I have ever faced," the creature rasped, its voice the drip of venom, "I doubt any have been as merciful as you. You do not even force me to revert to my bestial form. Your friends… they are all better than you. Do you understand?"

Liang bailed his fist, the knuckles white against the blood-smeared stone. Hot tears of shame and pain blurred his vision. He wanted to stand. To fight. His muscles screamed, but they would not obey. He had tried. He had learned, he had cultivated, he had followed Gen into hell. But it was not enough.

*What am I doing wrong? Why can I not be as strong as Gen? As Lorel? As Chubbs? Why is it always me?*

The question was a mountain on his soul, crushing and absolute. In that moment, Liang wanted only one thing. To die. Yes. To be forgotten by everyone. To let Gen and Lorel move forward in peace, unburdened by the useless, staining weight of his failure. Let life erase him.

The Three-Tailed Sky Demon smirked from above. "Breaking you is so easy. I enjoy it." It picked Liang up by the front of his torn robes, holding him aloft to look him in the eye. "How should I kill you now? Would you like to watch their fights end first? Or shall I pass sentence now? I am generous. I let you choose."

Liang bit his lip, his hand coming up to clutch weakly at the monster's chitinous forearm. Anger, hot and useless, rose in his throat. He was about to spit in its faceless visage.

Then, a memory flashed.

***

A distant time. Back on the Jiang Mountain.

That day, Liang had gone down to the quiet glen to feed the monastery's moon-bloom flowers. It was his refuge whenever the other, more talented disciples mocked him for his slow progress, for being the "worst" disciple of the Immortal. Liang always found peace there.

But today, someone else was there.

The figure was tall, his form almost blending with the soft light filtering through the trees. A faint smile touched his lips as he watched the ordinary white flowers. Liang immediately dropped to his knees, his heart hammering. "Master!"

Immortal Jiang turned. The smile remained, gentle. "Stand, Liang."

Liang stood, his head bowed, reverence and a flicker of fear mixing in his chest.

"I too love these flowers," Jiang said, his voice a calm, deep river.

Liang glanced at the common, fragile blooms and shook his head in confusion. "What does Master mean? They have nothing special."

Jiang leaned down. He did not uproot one. He simply extended a finger, and a single moon-bloom detached from its stem, floating into his open palm. He held it gently. "Are you sure about that?"

Liang watched, his breath caught.

The flower in Jiang's hand began to spin. A soft, golden light emanated from it, not from Jiang, but from *within* the petals themselves, as if he had awakened something sleeping. With a flick of Jiang's finger, the glowing flower floated across the glen to a bare section of a scholar's rock. As it touched the stone, it left behind a faint, shimmering tracery—a single word etched in light.

***Beautiful.***

The word glowed for a moment before fading into the rock, a permanent, gentle marking. The flower, its light spent, drifted back to Jiang's hand, perfectly whole, perfectly ordinary once more.

He turned to the stunned Liang. "Do not be too hard on yourself. Flowers all go through different seasons. But none last forever." His eyes held a profound depth. "Search inside, Liang. You shall find it."

Then he was gone, as if he had been part of the light all along.

Liang stood alone, clueless. *Search inside? Find what?* He sighed, the mystery too great for his aching heart. He leaned back against the old rock, the memory of the golden flower and the word 'beautiful' slipping into the back of his mind, a buried seed.

***

Back on the chessboard, the Three-Tailed Sky Demon slapped Liang's cheek, the sting sharp. "Hey. You cannot die yet. We have not had any fun."

Liang's voice was a hoarse scrape, rising from a deep, forgotten place. "Not… done yet."

His hand, which had been clutching the Sky Demon's arm weakly, suddenly tightened. His grip became a vice.

The Sky Demon frowned. Then it flinched.

A heat, so intense it felt like holding a miniature sun, bloomed from Liang's palm. The creature hissed and let go, retreating several steps in a blur. Its exoskeleton crackled, plates thickening and hardening in a frantic, instinctive reaction even faster than its intelligent mind could command. In the blink of an eye, its more refined form was gone, replaced by the brutal, bestial shape—its intelligence receding before the primal urge to survive a sudden, overwhelming threat.

Liang smiled. He looked at his own body. Golden flames, warm and vibrant, flickered to life around him, not consuming his robes, but clinging to him like a loyal mantle. The **Kalash of Elements** materialized in the air before him, humming with a new, profound resonance.

*Search inside.*

"Perhaps," Liang whispered to the empty air of his memory. "Perhaps I have been wrong all this time."

He did not reach *into* the Kalash. He reached *through* it. His hand plunged into its shimmering aperture, and he pulled something out.

It was not a torrent of flame. It was a compact, perfect orb of concentrated sunlight, resting in his palm. A miniature, breathing star.

The Three-Tailed Sky Demon let out a shriek of pure, unadulterated fury and lunged.

Liang was faster.

He stepped behind the creature with an ease that spoke of a fundamental shift. His mantle of flames moved with him, an extension of his will. With a soft pivot of his body, his foot lashed out and connected with the beast's ribs.

A sickening ***CRACK*** echoed across the silent board.

The Sky Demon was thrown like a child's toy, tumbling through the air.

Liang stepped into the void and vanished.

For the first time, Liang had moved beyond simple **Zhidow** creation. This was the **intent of Faith**, one of the rarest and most potent forces that could ever be imbued into a construct. His flames were not mere fire anymore. They were flames imbued with the faith to *never end*. Flames that would burn as long as Liang Wei trusted them.

**One of the three purest elements of the Kalash. The Fire Miracle.**

The Sky Demon flickered in mid-air, using **Jingdao** to solidify a pocket of space to land on. It shrieked and pounced downward, its hunter's instinct screaming to end this fast, to crush this impossible change.

Liang didn't wait. He started running.

The Fire Miracle, amplified by the abilities Master Yujin had conferred upon the board, surged to life. From the flames at his feet, a steed of black and orange fire materialized—living, breathing, its mane a waving inferno, its eyes pits of focused sunlight. Liang mounted it. On this board, he was the Horse. Now, he was wielding a real one.

**The Fire Horse Miracle.**

The Sky Demon's three tails pierced down like falling meteors. Liang urged his mount sideways with a thought. The fiery horse floated on the air as if it were solid ground. The venomous tails passed through the space where he had been.

Liang leaned forward. The horse understood. It dropped from the sky in a steep, controlled dive, its fiery hooves aimed at the Sky Demon's back.

The weight of the miracle pulled them down. The Sky Demon screamed—a mix of anger and a raw, unfamiliar thread of fear. Part of its human voice returned. "Impossible! Impossible! I cannot lose to a weakling!"

It clawed up in a desperate, frantic rage. But Liang was covered in the Miracle Fire. Where those claws made contact, they didn't scratch or burn. They *vanished*, consumed into nothingness.

Liang let go of the reins. He leaned out from his saddle and clasped his hand around the Sky Demon's faceless head.

They landed with a solid ***THUD*** that shook the board.

Liang dismounted. The Fire Horse stood beside him, a silent sentinel. He held the struggling Sky Demon aloft in his palm, as if displaying a final, terrible truth to it. Then his hand clenched.

***CRUNCH.***

The Miracle Fire did not explode. It *consumed*. The Three-Tailed Sky Demon's body ignited from the inside out, its form dissolving into ash and a burst of dark, potent blood that splashed across the board.

Just as Shelai had said. Liang lifted his head. He opened his mouth. Before the petrified, silent crowd, he drank the descending blood of the Three-Tailed Sky Demon.

The alabaster King's serene face shifted. For the first time, an expression of profound, impossible shock gripped its stone features. It looked from the burning Liang to Gen, as if seeing an unforeseeable feat.

*The Miracle Fire? Impossible.*

In the ancient days, the Kalash of Elements was a well known spell, even to Master Yujin. The Miracle Fire had been one of its signature, theoretical pinnacles. But of all who had ever learned the Kalash, no one—*no one*—had ever truly summoned the *real* Miracle Fire, the flame born of unshakeable personal faith, not just Qi.

The King turned its gaze to the White Queen fighting Lorel. In the vision it had seen upon its own awakening long ago, the Queen had spoken of "two." The King had always assumed it meant Gen and another—Lorel, perhaps. But now it understood.

*The 'two' was this unassuming boy.*

On the board, every other fight had somehow slowed. Cultivators, monsters, and pieces alike watched the burning figure of Liang Wei.

Until this moment, no one had ever bothered to truly think about him. In their minds, he was already dead, destined to be a footnote to the Sky Demon's victory. Now, the world had shifted beneath their feet.

In his own desperate fight, Gen stopped for a precious second. He looked at Liang, at the golden flames and the steed of fire. A smile so wide it split his face grew, making him forget the agony in his shoulder. "THAT IS MY BROTHER!" he shouted, his voice raw and triumphant, echoing across the hall. "I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU!"

For Gen, this felt like more than just another win. This was liberation. He had always carried a quiet, heavy guilt for Liang. He understood, in his bones, what it felt like to always be looking up at others, to feel you were holding them back. Liang was his deepest friend, even if neither of them knew how to say it. Right now, Gen felt something warm and fierce bloom in his chest as he watched Liang stand tall in his own sun.

Liang, at the same moment, glanced at Gen. The last of the Sky Demon's poison dissipated in his body, conquered by the new strength flowing through him. But his genuine, friendly smile never left his lips as he met Gen's eyes.

For that one moment, it was as if the world had stopped just for them.

Liang could finally see it—how deeply, wordlessly, Gen had been worried for him all this time.

A soft, heartfelt smile touched Liang's lips as he looked at his friend across the blood-stained board.

"I am here, my buddy."
