The black SUV rolled through the gates of Midnight's compound just after sunset.
Alex stood on the wide front steps with Pepper on his hip. Ten months of living here had made the place feel almost like home if "home" could be a fortress wrapped in luxury and a lingering sense of danger. Pepper had grown two inches and now spoke with startling clarity for a three-year-old. Pryde stood a little behind them, arms crossed, watching the vehicle approach with a lazy smile.
