Chapter 163 - BJK Chapter 163: The Proof of Loyalty Prepared by Urahara

At the sword training ground on the back mountain of the Squad 4 barracks, the leaves and branches in the forest rustled in the gentle breeze.

Pale white petals drifted down with the wind, landing on the sword scars etched into the bluestone ground, adding a touch of softness to the scene.

Hasumi Ren held his Zanpakuto, the tip pointing downward as his Spiritual Pressure flowed slowly along the blade.

Unohana stood opposite him. Her plain Shihakusho accentuated her upright posture, and the Zanpakuto in her hand gleamed with a faint, cold light.

During their sparring session just now, although Ren's movements remained precise, they lacked their usual sharpness, as if something was weighing on his mind.

"Let us stop here for today."

Unohana sheathed her blade.

"Ever since you returned from the last mission in the Rukongai, your condition has slipped somewhat. Your sword techniques are practiced, but they lack their usual vitality."

Ren's grip on his sword tightened slightly. He looked up at Unohana, a trace of apology on his face.

"Forgive the poor display, Captain. Perhaps the recent heavy workload has left me a bit fatigued."

Unohana did not press the issue. She simply walked slowly to a tree, raised her hand to catch a falling petal, and gently rubbed it between her fingertips.

She paused, turned sideways, and let her gaze fall upon Ren.

"If there is anything you cannot resolve on your own, you do not need to keep it bottled up inside. Remember, I am your Captain."

Ren felt a slight warmth in his heart.

"Thank you for your concern, Captain. I understand."

He could feel Unohana's care and understood just how perceptive his Captain was.

However, he truly did not know how to broach this particular subject with her yet.

Perhaps it wouldn't be too late to bring Unohana into the fold once things were progressing more smoothly.

After bidding farewell to Unohana, Ren did not return to the Squad 4 dormitories.

He had received a handwritten letter from Urahara Kisuke, requesting another meeting to discuss matters today.

Ren made his way through the Squad 2 compound and arrived at the entrance to the Maggot's Nest.

The black iron gates stood cold and imposing. The surrounding Spiritual Pressure was chaotic and oppressive, a stark contrast to the tranquility of Squad 4.

The guards on duty showed a flash of surprise upon seeing Ren, but they still respectfully opened the iron gates.

They had received orders from Urahara Kisuke; Ren now had free clearance to enter and exit the Maggot's Nest.

Navigating through the winding corridors, Ren arrived at Urahara Kisuke's secret laboratory.

The lab was still cluttered with various instruments. Reishi lamps emitted a soft glow, and the air was filled with the faint scent of medicine and metal.

Urahara was sitting at his workbench, tinkering with a spherical object.

Seeing Ren enter, he flashed his usual lazy smile.

"Yo, Ren. Perfect timing."

Ren walked straight over and sat down opposite the workbench.

"What did you call me here for?"

Urahara continued to toy with the small sphere in his hand.

"It's about your plan to defect to Aizen."

"I've come up with a few ideas, but... are you sure you can get him to trust you?"

"He... probably won't trust me."

Ren's tone was calm, yet it carried a certainty that saw right through to the core of the matter.

"No matter how much I pretend to agree with his ideals, he will likely never truly trust me."

Urahara raised an eyebrow. The smile on his face faded slightly, replaced by a touch of seriousness.

"Then what you said before..."

Ren's gaze sharpened.

"Everything Aizen does is driven by extreme arrogance. He enjoys the feeling of controlling everything, and he is obsessed with the unknown and things that hold research value."

"He doesn't need to trust me. As long as he finds me interesting, thinks I have utility, and believes I still harbor secrets he hasn't unraveled, he won't kill me."

Urahara fell silent. He looked at Ren, his eyes full of contemplation.

Ren was right. If Aizen was truly the kind of person Ren described...

Then his arrogance was the greatest flaw they could exploit.

"You're certainly confident that you've seen right through Aizen."

Urahara chuckled lightly and raised a hand to scratch his head.

"However, just that isn't enough. If you want him to accept you, you'll need a sufficiently weighty proof of loyalty."

Ren nodded, looking at the small sphere in Urahara's hand.

"That's true... Since you called me here this time, you must already have an idea."

The corners of Urahara's mouth curled up into a smirk.

"Indeed. Squad 2 is about to launch a joint mission."

"This mission involves a rebellious noble who has fled to the northwest district of the Rukongai, and it requires Squad 4 to send medical personnel along."

Ren's heart stirred.

"Do you think Aizen will go too?"

Urahara nodded.

"It's not certain yet, but this would be a good opportunity for him."

Ren's tone remained calm.

"So, what is this proof of loyalty you mentioned?"

Urahara's eyes flickered. He stood up, walked over to a bookshelf, pulled out a file, and handed it to Ren.

"Take a look at this."

Ren took the file and opened it. Inside was the identity profile of a Soul Reaper.

The man in the photo had an ordinary face and dull eyes. The file indicated that he was a member of Squad 2's Stealth Force, responsible for the execution of this joint mission.

"This person is a death row inmate."

Urahara's voice was low.

"I've already tampered with his brain. He has lost his self-awareness. I've already completed the most difficult step for you."

"Next, I will implant a modified artificial soul into his brain, molding him into a normal Stealth Force member."

"After that, we just need to create an opportunity—an opportunity that forces you into a corner."

"Being pushed to the brink and betraying a comrade to survive... only a defection like that will seem logical to Aizen."

"This is the proof of loyalty I have prepared for you."

Ren frowned slightly, his gaze toward Urahara growing a bit more complex.

"You want me to kill him in front of Aizen?"

"Yes."

Urahara's tone was resolute.

"If Aizen makes a move against you, I will have this artificial soul 'accidentally' stumble upon you and Aizen during the mission."

"To survive, you will kill him to silence him. A Soul Reaper pushed to the brink, harboring secrets, cutting down a comrade for self-preservation—this act will be authentic enough."

"But what if Aizen investigates his corpse, or his identity...?"

"Let him investigate."

Urahara smiled confidently.

"The identity I forged is flawless. His background and resume perfectly match those of a Stealth Force member."

"He won't find any clues from this soul, either. The modified artificial soul will dissipate on its own after the host's death, leaving no trace."

"Even if Aizen examines the corpse, he will only conclude that this was an ordinary, unlucky Soul Reaper."

Ren fell silent, his fingers gently rubbing the edge of the file.

This plan was meticulous enough, and ruthless enough.

"Alright."

After a long while, Ren looked up, a glint of determination flashing in his eyes.

"Then we'll do as you say."

Urahara looked at him, a satisfied smile appearing on his face.

The two carefully discussed the details of the plan further.

This included their positioning during the mission, the timing of the pawn's appearance, Ren's response, and how to ensure Aizen would witness the betrayal with his own eyes.

The lights in the laboratory gradually dimmed as the night deepened. A conspiracy targeting Aizen was quietly taking shape.

Upon leaving the Maggot's Nest, Ren looked up at the night sky. The stars dotted the expanse, and the moonlight was cold and clear.

From this moment on, the road ahead was filled with the unknown and danger.

Ren tightened his grip on his Zanpakuto.

Now, he only had to wait for the next mission to arrive.
