My head snaps with speed in the direction of the voice. Even though I recognize the tone immediately, the nightmares I just endured have left my reflexes raw.

She's sitting nearby, a book resting on her thigh. Her fingers are pressed into its middle spine to hold her place, and her brows are furrowed with concern. She looks exactly the same…
And I wonder at myself. Why did I think that because she is a witch, she would have changed in some visible way?

"The one and only," she says softly. "Bad dreams?"
I nod, but I don't volunteer the details. When she cocks a brow and leans forward, I keep my silence because, honestly, I don't even understand what the dream was about.
