Chapter 178 - Chapter 178: Battling the Red Devils Again! The Ultimate Lorenzo-Messi Connection!

Camp Nou on a Champions League night had a specific frequency — ninety-five thousand people who already knew the result and had come to watch the confirmation. The 4-0 first leg at Old Trafford had made this second leg a formality. Nobody in the stadium or on either bench believed Manchester United were advancing. But formalities in European football still produced ninety minutes of football, and Barcelona intended to play them properly.

Santiago set the scene from the ESPN Sur booth.

"Welcome to Camp Nou for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final. Barcelona lead 4-0 from Old Trafford. The question tonight is not whether Barcelona advance — it's whether Manchester United can leave with any dignity intact."

Inés had the lineups.

"Moyes has made changes. Van Persie is dropped again — Hernández starts in his place, with Rooney behind him. Fellaini and Carrick in the double pivot. Giggs is also out — Kagawa takes his position on the left. This is a manager who is making decisions for the present, not the future."

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Carrick, Fellaini; Valencia, Rooney, Kagawa; Hernández.

"And Barcelona rotate. Bartra comes in at left-back for Alba. Otherwise, the strongest available hand."

FC Barcelona (4-3-3): Valdés; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Bartra; Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta; Neymar, Lorenzo, Messi.

Fweet—!

Lorenzo tapped to Messi. Messi laid it back to Xavi. The Camp Nou settled into its rhythm.

Manchester United pressed — genuinely, aggressively, every outfield player committed to winning possession in Barcelona's half. Hernández and Rooney harassed Piqué and Mascherano. Fellaini dropped behind Carrick and tracked Lorenzo with the physical intent that Moyes had drilled since the first leg. The system was clear: press high, win the ball early, and try to score before Barcelona's quality established itself.

It was brave. It was also, against this Barcelona midfield, unsustainable.

For thirty minutes the possession split hovered near fifty-fifty — closer than most opponents managed against Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets. United's pressing triggers were well-drilled. Carrick read passing lanes accurately. Fellaini's physical presence disrupted Lorenzo's usual hold-up patterns. Valencia drove at Bartra on the right and twice created half-chances that came to nothing.

The Camp Nou crowd watched with patient attention. They had seen this phase before — the first thirty minutes where the opponent believes they are in the match, followed by the moment when Barcelona remind them that they are not.

The moment arrived in the 36th minute.

On the left side of United's midfield, Kagawa received from Evra in a deep position. He had limited options — Busquets was pressing from one side, Iniesta shadowing from the other. He chose to lay the ball back to Evra.

The pass was slightly careless. A fraction too soft, a fraction too central.

Iniesta appeared. He intercepted the backpass with an outstretched foot, half-turned, and chipped a diagonal to Xavi, who was already moving into space.

The Barcelona formation extended. The transition from defence to attack happened in three touches — Xavi to Iniesta in a quick one-two, then Xavi carrying forward at pace, scanning the attacking options as the United defence scrambled to reset.

Busquets pushed up on the left. Xavi found him with a flicked half-volley that dropped perfectly into his path. Valencia pressed from the wing. Busquets hooked the ball around the tackle with his left ankle and tapped a diagonal into the central channel.

Lorenzo moved to receive. He used his shoulder to lean Carrick off balance, stepped back two yards, and took Busquets's pass on the half-turn. Fellaini arrived late — his footwork a step behind, his attempt to close the gap failing as Lorenzo's first touch took the ball into the space between the two midfielders.

Lorenzo looked at the pitch. His back was half-turned to goal. Messi was making a run behind the line — the specific diagonal that split Evra and Vidic, timed to arrive at the moment the ball did.

Lorenzo struck it. A low through-ball, right-footed, hit with the arch — the pass threaded between Evra on the left and Vidic in the centre, finding the corridor that existed for approximately one second before the defensive line closed it.

"Lorenzo has found Messi behind the defence!" Santiago roared.

Messi took it in stride at the edge of the area. Vidic scrambled to cover. Ferdinand held inside. De Gea crouched on his line.

Messi took two touches laterally, entered the box, turned his body, and curled a low shot toward the far post.

The ball struck the inside of the left post and rebounded into the net.

1-0. (5-0 on aggregate.)

Camp Nou celebrated — warmly rather than wildly, the specific applause of a crowd that expected the goal and is pleased that it arrived in the way it did.

"MESSI!! ONE-NIL!!" Santiago called. "Lorenzo attracts Carrick and Fellaini in the centre, turns away from both, and delivers a through-ball that only Messi's timing can reach! The aggregate is five-nil and this tie is beyond any mathematical rescue!"

Inés noted the sequence. "The interception by Iniesta, the transition through Xavi and Busquets, and Lorenzo's final pass — the entire move was built on Kagawa's single careless backpass. Seven seconds from turnover to goal. Manchester United's press was designed to win the ball. When it fails, the spaces it creates are exactly the spaces Barcelona are built to exploit."

Messi jogged to Lorenzo. They exchanged a brief handshake — the particular handshake of two players who have done this often enough that the celebration has become shorthand rather than spectacle.

On the touchline, Moyes stood with his hands in his coat pockets. He had watched the same player dismantle his team in both legs with techniques that his coaching staff had studied on video for three weeks and still couldn't prevent.

Behind him, on the bench, Van Persie sat with his arms folded. Two matches. Zero starts. Two consecutive Golden Boots and he was watching from the substitutes' bench while his team conceded five.
