A violent feather-laced gale erupted on Mai's field and swept toward Yugi's backrow.
"Honda, it's your fault for jinxing it!" Jonouchi snapped. "Now Mai's gonna wipe Yugi's set cards!"
"Yugi!" Anzu cried.
"I activate the Counter Trap Solemn Judgment!" Yugi declared. "I pay half my Life Points—your Spell's activation is negated and destroyed!"

An elderly figure appeared before Yugi's set cards, flanked by two female angels. The old man raised his hand—
and the raging storm stopped dead.
"Tch… so it doesn't work, huh?"
"Then I Normal Summon Harpie Lady 1 in attack position!"

The dragon blasted a column of searing flame straight at Gaia—
"Nope." Yugi's voice was flat. "I activate the Trap Wall of Disruption."
"Huh… duel's over," Kisaragi muttered.
"Wall of Disruption activates when an opponent declares an attack," Yugi explained. "All Attack Position monsters your opponent controls lose ATK equal to (number of monsters you control) × 800."
"Mai—your field has three Attack Position monsters. So all of them lose 2400 ATK!"

"What—?! My monsters…!" Mai's eyes widened.
"Incredible," Jonouchi said. "Yugi set up a trap like that…"
"Now Mai's monsters can't stand up to Yugi at all," Kisaragi said.
Pegasus chuckled. "Heh heh heh… fascinating. For a mere vessel of a dark soul, Yugi-boy is a rather capable duelist."
"Counterattack—Awakened Gaia the Fierce Knight!"
Gaia burst through the dragon's flames and drove his spear straight through Harpie's Pet Dragon, shattering it.

"Tch—then I Special Summon Harpie's Pet Dragon—Fearsome Fire Blast in Defense Position from my hand!"

"I Tribute one monster I control. The Summon—Normal, Flip, or Special—is negated and that monster is destroyed."
"I Tribute Awakened Gaia. Your Special Summon is negated—Fearsome Fire Blast is destroyed!"

Good, Mai thought, regaining her composure. Yugi's monster is gone too. If his hand is empty and he doesn't draw something with more than 1200 ATK… I won't lose!
"My turn—draw!"
Yugi glanced at the card he drew… and smiled faintly.
"Mai—I drew Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight."
Mai's eyes sharpened. "That monster's ATK is 2300, but it's Level 7. Without tributes, you can't summon it!"
"No," Yugi said. "If this is the only card in my hand, Swift Gaia can be Normal Summoned without tributes."
"What…?" The light drained from Mai's eyes.
"Come forth—Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight!"

"Battle! Swift Gaia attacks Harpie Lady 1—Spiral Spear Strike!"
Swift Gaia charged forward on horseback, spear thrusting clean through Harpie Lady's abdomen.

Yugi Muto wins!
"The winner—Yugi Muto!"
"Yes! Yugi won!" Anzu cheered.
Jonouchi's expression was complicated. He was happy Yugi won—
but watching Mai lose still made his chest ache.
"The first round of the elimination tournament ends today," the attendant announced. "Tomorrow, Yugi Muto, Kisaragi Aoi, and Jonouchi Katsuya will compete here to decide the champion of Duelist Kingdom!"
Pegasus rose and left the arena.
"I'm looking forward to tomorrow's duels more and more…" Pegasus murmured.
