The evening had deepened into night.
In the midst of the city's glittering lights and shadows stood a large, luxurious house.
A tall gate, a white marble driveway, lush green lawns, and fountains on all sides.
Inside was a double-height living room. A massive crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a soft, warm glow throughout the space.
The marble floor gleamed under the light, and shadows danced across the wood-panelled walls.
The sofas were upholstered in deep purple velvet, flanked by golden lamps. The room was quiet, yet that silence carried a heavy stillness.
Anurag sat silently on one of the sofas.
At that moment, Anirban Sir walked in.
"They called from school for tomorrow morning. The Headmistress phoned herself. They're forming an inquiry committee. Most likely they'll suspend you… or maybe even terminate you permanently."
Anurag showed no reaction. He simply gave a small nod, as if he had expected it, and kept his eyes lowered.
Anirban said,
"Don't overthink it. Everything will be fine."
Anurag remained silent.
Then the door opened and Mrs. Arundhati Devbarman — Anurag's mother — entered. She wore a purple sari, her hair tied in a neat bun, her face full of worry.
In her hands was a tray with black coffee.
She placed the tray on the table and sat beside her son, gently resting a hand on his shoulder.
"Son… if you want, I can handle everything. I'll go to the school myself. I won't let the Headmistress or the trustees say a single word against you."
Anurag Sir shook his head tiredly.
"No, Mom. Please don't get involved in this."
Arundhati paused. Then she spoke softly,
"And that girl… Sneha…"
"Mom!" Anurag stopped her, his voice exhausted. "Please don't say anything about her."
Arundhati fell silent. Looking into her son's eyes, she understood — his heart was already in pieces. It was better not to say more. She simply pressed his shoulder gently, then stood up and left the room.
Anirban also said nothing. He stood quietly for a few moments, then walked out.
Now Anurag was alone in the room. The chandelier light fell on his face as he sat lost in deep thought.
Again and again, the scene at Sneha's house replayed in his mind — Surajit Ray's sharp words: "pervert," "filthy," "you've destroyed the girl's life." Aunty Nitu's accusations: "You are responsible for everything," "you ruined her studies," "you ended her future." Sneha's crying. Her swollen eyes. Her desperate "No, Sir! No!"
Anurag's chest burned. Guilt. Overwhelming guilt. He felt he was to blame for it all. Because of him, Sneha's mind had drifted from her studies. Because of him, her exam results were suffering. Because of him, the whole school was talking. Because of him, her future was now at risk.
He closed his eyes and let out a long sigh.
In his mind he thought,
"I should disappear from her life completely. Stay far away so I don't distract her anymore. I don't want her name dragged through the mud because of me."

The next morning.
A heavy silence had settled inside the Headmistress's chamber at school.
Soft morning light filtered through the windows, yet the room felt dark.
Seated around the table were everyone — Headmistress Rupashree Ma'am in her chair, beside her Radhika Ma'am, Kusum Ma'am, Shipra Ma'am, Nalini Ma'am, Meenakshi Ma'am, and Shilpa Ma'am.
The two newly appointed male teachers — Abhijit Sir and Soumyadeep Sir — sat with grave expressions.
Surajit Ray and Nitu Ray sat in one corner, faces stern.
Sneha sat between them, head bowed, eyes red and swollen, cheeks wet with tears.
And Anurag Sir sat beside the Headmistress, eyes lowered, hands clasped tightly in front of him.
Rupashree Ma'am was speaking, her voice calm but heavy.
"Anurag Sir… we all considered you an excellent teacher. From your very first day, the students adored you. Your way of explaining things, your patience, your decency — we noticed everything. We never expected something like this from you."
Her words pierced Anurag Sir like arrows.
Radhika Ma'am spoke with hurt in her voice,
"We thought you were such a good and decent teacher. I even blessed you with all my heart. And this is how you repaid us!"
Anurag Sir's heart ached badly at her words.
Kusum Ma'am shook her head and said,
"The girls can't concentrate in class anymore. There's whispering and giggling in the corridors. Everyone is only talking about this. You know this is a girls' school. Their safety and their honour are our collective responsibility."
Shipra Ma'am cleared her throat and added,
"We respected you so much. But now… now you have destroyed that respect."
Anurag Sir kept his head lowered. Every word felt like a knife in his chest. Deep inside, he burned with regret. *Why did I make such a mistake? Why couldn't I control myself?*
Because of him, Sneha's honour had also been ruined!
Shipra Ma'am continued,
"Do you realise you could even go to jail for this?"
Sneha burst out crying,
"No, no, please don't say anything against Sir. It was all my fault… please… I asked Sir to do those things… it was my wish… my desire… please don't blame Sir…"
Aunty Nitu scolded her sharply,
"Be quiet, Sneha! What are you saying? You're dragging our family's honour through the mud! Shut up! Just shut up, for God's sake!"
Anurag Sir heard Sneha's words. They only made him feel worse — because he realised how deeply she truly loved him. She was standing up for him in front of everyone!
Surajit Ray spoke in a grave voice,
"We thought our daughter would study safely in this school. But now? The whole school is talking. The news has even spread to the girls' families! We have no face left to show anyone."
(Actually, Riddhiman's mother had quietly used a few girls from the school to spread rumours about Sneha and Anurag Sir throughout the entire campus. Although Riddhiman still wanted to marry Sneha, his mother had no intention of ever letting her son marry the girl. She had done this to punish Sneha's family.)
Abhijit Sir said calmly,
"Anurag, you know how much we liked you. But this incident… it has damaged the school's image. The students are now afraid."
Anurag Sir listened in silence. Every word struck him deeply. He had never wanted any of this, yet he had fallen madly in love with Sneha and lost all control — he understood that now.
Soumyadeep Sir added,
"We don't want this to escalate further. But someone has to take responsibility."
Rupashree Ma'am let out a long sigh. Then she looked straight at Anurag Sir and said,
"Anurag Sir… your job here is over."
The words sent a shock through the room.
Sneha was sobbing uncontrollably. She looked at Sir with innocent, desperate eyes.
But Sir did not meet her gaze even once.
Rupashree Ma'am continued in a gentler tone,
"I will not let this matter grow any bigger than it already has. Whatever has spread, I will stop it from spreading further. I will instruct all the girls — no talking about this in class, in the corridors, or anywhere. But you all must also be careful. We want a bright future for Sneha. Her studies, her dreams — we hope none of it is destroyed."
Everyone remained silent. The room was so quiet one could hear a pin drop.
Rupashree Ma'am looked at Anurag Sir with pained eyes. It hurt her deeply to say this — he had been one of her favourite teachers.
The Headmistress said,
"Anurag Sir, you can no longer continue teaching here."
Anurag Sir nodded slowly and replied in a calm voice,
"I… understand, Ma'am."
Sneha kept crying, her eyes never leaving Sir's face for even a second. Anurag Sir never once looked at her.
*Is Sir angry with me?* Sneha wondered silently.
Her heart was breaking.
Rupashree Ma'am looked at Sneha and said,
"Sneha, from now on focus only on your studies. Your uncle and aunt will support you. We all want you to achieve something great. But you must learn from this incident."
Aunty Nitu wiped her eyes and said,
"We will sort everything out at home. We will explain a lot to Sneha. Ma'am, please don't expel her from school."
"Very well," Rupashree Ma'am replied.
Surajit Ray stood up.
"We'll take our leave."
Anurag Sir also rose. Head bowed, he glanced once at everyone — tears in Radhika Ma'am's eyes, Kusum Ma'am looking down, Shipra Ma'am's face hard, Abhijit Sir and Soumyadeep Sir silent.
Anurag Sir walked slowly toward the door. Sneha kept crying, staring at him.
"Sir…"
She called out to him in her heart.
Sir seemed to hear it, yet he did not stop. He did not turn back.
In his mind he thought,
"Take care, Sneha."
Then he opened the door and walked out.
