Chapter 18 - Assigned Protector

Allan's eyes were not able to track the movements of the two beings in front of him. The only thing he saw were blurs appearing in one spot, only for them to appear in a different one the next second.

The last thing he saw before a massive shockwave made him lose consciousness was the principal, Mr. Veyne, glancing at him over his left shoulder before jumping through the destroyed wall into the courtyard.

The battle had moved outside.

His consciousness faded away a few seconds after, as his mind couldn't manage the sheer magnitude of their strength. Honestly, he was lucky, the shockwaves produced by their clash were enough to destroy the bodies of all students and damage some of the teachers currently on campus.

It was only because the Principal deliberately held back much of his strength and protected the students at the same time that all of them were still alive.

By this point, all military personnel within the East district had been deployed to contain the situation and prevent further damage to the city. Mundane and awakened personnel could be seen either already engaging the hollow creatures or moving towards Easy Gate High.

Fortunately, it seemed that only one Voranth was leading the attack, and it was already clashing with Principal Veyne. Everyone already knew who Garrick Veyne was, so all the upper echelons of the army were confident that they would only need to take care of the mindless creatures attacking them.

There was a saying within the army, 'Only the strong can oppose the strong.' It wouldn't matter how many soldiers attacked the Voranth; be it hundreds or thousands, if they weren't as strong as the creature, they would all die without even putting as much as a scratch on its body. Even lower ranked awakened weren't exempt from this rule.

With this in mind, the army's leadership decided to leave that monster in Garrick's capable hands.

Throughout the whole city, only one thing was being covered by the news and social media.

The ongoing attack on East Gate High.

Every single person within the city walls watched as countless drones hovered and moved around the institution's airspace. Reactions were varied, some were scared, others were confused-how could this have happened? How could a rift open inside their city?

Cities were supposed to have preventive measures for this exact situation. Yes, every single person in the world was familiar with what rifts were, but it was one thing seeing videos of them or hearing about one opening close to their cities.

It was extremely rare for one to open inside a city, much less one like New Chicago. The last one that opened inside was because the veil had weakened due to the world's tribulation judging the new potential awakened of humanity. Even then, the situation had been promptly contained; well…that's what the media said at least.

The entirety of New Chicago stopped moving. Every single person paused what they were doing to watch the live streams. Construction workers stopped their work, office workers stood up from their desks and stared at the screens inside their offices, people walking down the streets stood frozen looking at their phones with concerned expressions.

Among every citizen within the city's walls, the most scared and horrified ones were the family members of the students currently inside the school.

They couldn't do anything, literally nothing. Even if they tried to approach the school, the army would stop them to prevent their deaths. They held each other, crying and frustrated at themselves and the city. They had been promised that their children will be protected at all costs within the walls of the school, and be provided the opportunity to grow so that their strength wouldn't be found lacking in this world.

They had felt relief when they saw all the military personnel guarding the perimeter, and all the military grade equipment had made them feel secure enough to expose their children to a military institution. Their decision had been secured when they heard that the decorated awakened Garrick Veyne would be appointed Principal.

Now, all they were witnessing was the destruction of such a fortified and protected school. All the drones captured were destroyed buildings and people either running or fighting for their lives. Soldiers had already arrived to contain the situation.

Fortunately, no bodies could be seen laying on the ground, be it students, teachers or soldiers; not a single human body could be seen death on the ground. Only the carcasses of the hollow could be seen laying death all around.

It gave hope to everyone watching that the worst hasn't happened and that they'll be able to see their loved ones again.

"As you can see, the situation seems to be under control. No hollows have been able to leave the school's installations. From what we can tell, the rift opened right inside the school's courtyard. The army seems to have established a perimeter around the school's grounds to contain and eradicate any hollow that manages to escape outside." A particular news anchor said as she stood inside a news helicopter hovering a few miles away from the school.

They didn't dare approach the battle, as they knew that they would only get in the way…and would most likely died a horrible death.

"It seems that Principal Garrick Veyne has also entered the fray." She continued, doing her best to not fall from the helicopter as they could still feel the shockwaves from the battle. "He seems to be keeping the Voranth at bay, preventing it from attacking the troops and students."
