Chapter 58 - THE HUNTERS

# CHAPTER 58: THE HUNTERS

The mountains rise like sleeping giants.

Ancient. Immovable. Indifferent to the struggles of those who walk among them.

Alana and Alexander climb. Through dense forest. Over rocky terrain. Following the map Thorne gave them. Following the pull in Alana's blood. The call of her ancestors.

*The temple. Waiting. Somewhere ahead.*

*The guardian. Watching. For centuries.*

*The key. To ending this. Once and for all.*

The journey takes hours. Days. The bond sustaining them. Sharing strength. Sharing warmth. Sharing the exhaustion that threatens to pull them under.

*Keep going. We're close. I can feel it.*

*The blood in my veins. Recognizing the path. The place where it began. Where it might end.*

---

Night falls.

They make camp. In a small clearing. Protected by trees. Hidden from view.

*No fire. Too risky. In unknown territory.*

Alexander holds her. The bond pulsing. Warm against the cold mountain air.

"Are you okay?" His voice is soft. Only for her.

*Tired. Scared. Determined. All at once.*

"I'm fine. Just... overwhelmed. Everything that's happened. Everything we still have to do."

*I feel it too. The weight. The responsibility. The fear.*

"But we're together. That's what matters."

*Together. Always together. The promise we made. The bond we share.*

"Always."

---

They sleep.

Fitfully. Dreamlessly. Exhaustion claiming them.

Until—

A sound. Cracking twig. Rustling leaves. Footsteps. Multiple. Approaching.

Alana's eyes snap open. The wolf rising. Alert. Ready.

*Someone's here.*

*Alexander feels it too. Through the bond. Both of them awake. Both of them reaching. For weapons. For power. For each other.*

*They come from the south. Three. No. Four. Human shapes. Moving quietly. But not quietly enough.*

---

"Show yourselves." Alexander's voice cuts through the darkness. Alpha command. Layered with power.

The shapes freeze. Then emerge. Slowly. Reluctantly.

Four figures. Dressed in black. Armed with weapons. Crossbows. Silver-tipped bolts. The tools of hunters.

*Hunters. Here. In the mountains. Following us.*

*Or waiting for us.*

---

A woman steps forward. Tall. Lean. Weathered face. Cold eyes. The leader.

"Alexander Pierce. Alana Blackwood." Her voice is flat. Unfriendly. "We've been looking for you."

*They know our names. They've been tracking us.*

*Why?*

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"I'm Director Kane. And these are my associates." She gestures to the others. "We represent an organization. Interested in your... unique situation."

*Director Kane. The name triggers something. William mentioned hunters. A new leader. Worse than the last.*

*Hunters. Here. Confronting us. In the middle of nowhere.*

"What kind of interest?"

"Your enemy. The demon. Malachar." Kane's eyes gleam. "We know what he is. What he wants. And we believe. We can help each other."

*Help each other? Hunters helping wolves? Impossible.*

"Why would we trust you?"

"You wouldn't. Not yet." Kane's expression doesn't change. "But you will. When you hear what we have to offer."

---

Alana exchanges a glance with Alexander. Through the bond. Sharing doubt. Suspicion. Curiosity.

*Hunters. Who want to help. Against a demon.*

*It sounds insane. But then again. So does everything else. In our lives.*

"Talk. But keep your weapons down. And your hands visible."

*Kane nods. Gestures to her people. They lower their crossbows. But don't put them away.*

"Malachar has been a problem. For our organization. For centuries. He interferes. With our mission. With our objectives. He's... unpredictable. Dangerous. To everyone. Not just wolves."

*A demon. A problem. For human hunters. Because he's unpredictable. Not because he's evil.*

*Interesting. And concerning.*

"What's your mission?"

"To maintain the balance. Between humans and supernaturals. Werewolves. Vampires. Witches. Demons. All must be controlled. Contained. Or eliminated. If they threaten exposure."

*Control. Containment. Elimination. The hunter's creed. Not exactly friendship. But not pure hatred either.*

"And Malachar?"

"Is beyond control. Beyond containment. He threatens everything. The balance. The secrecy. The peace. He must be eliminated. Permanently." Kane meets Alana's eyes. "Which is exactly. What you're trying to do. Isn't it?"

---

*She knows. About the temple. About the key. About everything.*

*How?*

"How do you know what we're trying to do?"

"We have our sources. Our intelligence." Kane smiles. Cold. Thin. "The same way we knew. You'd be traveling. Through these mountains. Tonight."

*Sources. Intelligence. Someone told them. Someone who knows our plans.*

*The traitor. Still out there. Still watching. Still talking.*

"We were told there was another traitor." Alexander's voice is hard. "I'm guessing. You've been in contact."

"We have... informants. On both sides. Of the conflict." Kane doesn't deny it. "The demon. Has been recruiting. Promising power. Promising survival. To those who help him. Return."

*Recruiting. Even after his defeat. Even in destruction. Still pulling strings. Through others.*

"Who? Who's working with him?"

"That information. Comes with a price." Kane's eyes narrow. "We help you find the temple. Deal with the guardian. Destroy the key. In exchange. You help us. With our problem."

*Quid pro quo. Hunters and wolves. Working together. Against a common enemy.*

*The enemy of my enemy.*

"What problem?"

"Malachar's hosts. His servants. His minions. They're regrouping. Planning. Trying to bring him back. We need help. Finding them. Stopping them. Before it's too late."

*His hosts. His servants. The network he built. Over centuries. Still active. Still dangerous.*

"You want us to hunt them. For you."

"We want you to help us hunt them. With us." Kane corrects. "Together. As allies. In this one thing."

---

Alana thinks. Considers. Weighs.

*Hunters. Who want to control. Contain. Eliminate. Supernaturals. Like us. Like our pack. Like our daughter.*

*But also. Hunters. Who have intelligence. Resources. Knowledge. That could help us. End Malachar. Forever.*

*Can we trust them? No. Should we use them? Maybe.*

*The enemy of my enemy. Is not my friend. But might be useful. In the short term.*

"What guarantees do we have? That you won't turn on us. After the demon is gone?"

"None." Kane is honest. Brutally so. "But consider. The alternative. Malachar returns. Stronger. Angrier. More determined. He won't stop. With your daughter. He'll consume. Everyone. Everything. Human and wolf alike."

*True. The demon is the greater threat. Here and now. The hunters. Can be dealt with. Later. If necessary.*

"And if we refuse?"

"Then we'll find the temple ourselves. Destroy the key. And deal with Malachar. Our way." Kane's voice drops. "But I should warn you. Our methods. Are less... discriminating. Than yours. There will be collateral damage. Wolves caught in the crossfire. Perhaps even you."

*A threat. Disguised as a warning. Work with us. Or get out of our way. Or die.*

*Not much of a choice. Really.*

---

Alana looks at Alexander. Through the bond. Seeking his thoughts. His instincts.

*They're dangerous. Untrustworthy. But also right. About Malachar. And they know things. We don't.*

*The enemy of my enemy. I don't like it. But I see the logic.*

*Temporary alliance. Then we go our separate ways. Once the demon is truly gone.*

*Agreed.*

---

"We'll work with you." Alana speaks. Voice firm. "On one condition. You don't harm any member of my pack. Or any innocent. Wolf or human. During our alliance."

*Kane studies her. Long moment. Then nods.*

"Agreed. As long as they don't interfere. With our operations. Or threaten our people."

*Fair enough. A temporary truce. With clear boundaries.*

"And you tell us. Who your informant is. Who's been feeding you information. About us."

*Kane's expression flickers. Almost imperceptibly. But Alana sees it. Through the bond. Enhanced perception.*

"That information. Is more valuable. Than our alliance. I'm afraid."

*More valuable. To her. Or to us?*

*Or dangerous. To someone she's protecting.*

"Then no alliance." Alexander crosses his arms. "We'll find the temple ourselves. Deal with the guardian. Destroy the key. Without your help."

*Bluff. Maybe. But necessary. To push for the truth.*

*Kane's jaw tightens. She didn't expect this. The hard line.*

---

"Wait." Another voice. From behind Kane. One of the other hunters. A young man. Dark skin. Sharp eyes. Nervous.

"Director. We need them. The temple is protected. By ancient wards. That only a Luna can open." He looks at Alana. "Without her blood. Her power. We can't get in. We'll fail."

*The wards. The blood. Of course. The temple can only be opened. By the line of the first Luna.*

*They need us. As much as we might need them.*

*Kane's expression hardens. But she doesn't contradict him.*

"Fine." She says finally. "The informant. Is someone inside your pack. Someone who's been feeding us information. For months. Since before the battle."

*Months. Before the battle. Before the demon revealed himself. Someone has been working against us. For a long time.*

"Who?"

"His name is Elias. He's a Beta. In the Southern Storm pack." Kane's voice is flat. "But he's not the only one. There are others. We don't know who. Even our informant. Doesn't know everything."

*Elias. The Beta who led the betrayal. The attack. He's still working against us. Even now.*

*But also others. Unknown. Unidentified. Still watching. Still talking.*

---

"Anything else?"

"One more thing." Kane meets Alana's eyes. Direct. Unflinching. "Your friend. Vivian. She was our contact. Initially. But she stopped. Months ago. We haven't heard from her. Since before the battle."

*Vivian. The traitor who confessed. Who begged for forgiveness. Who swore. She'd do anything. To make amends.*

*But she never told us. About the hunters. About being their contact. About how deep. Her betrayal went.*

*Another lie. Another secret. From someone I trusted.*

*I can't think about that now. Focus on the mission. Deal with Vivian later.*

"Anything else?"

"No. That's everything." Kane gestures to her people. "We'll escort you. To the temple. Help you deal with the guardian. Then we part ways. Unless. We have reason. To continue. Our alliance."

*Escort us. Or monitor us. Make sure we do what we promised. Hard to tell the difference.*

"Fine. Let's go."

---

They walk.

Through the night. Through the mountains. Following Kane's lead. Following the map. Following the call in Alana's blood.

*Closer now. I can feel it. The temple. The guardian. The end. Or the beginning.*

*Of something.*

Dawn approaches. The sky lightening. Grey. Then pink. Then gold.

And there—on a peak ahead. A structure. Ancient. Stone. Covered in vines. Almost invisible. Against the mountain.

*The temple. Hidden. Waiting. For centuries.*

*For me.*

---

At the entrance.

A figure waits.

Woman. Ancient. Weathered. But standing tall. Eyes bright. Aware. Watching.

*Lyra. The guardian. The sister of the first Luna. Still alive. Still waiting. After all this time.*

She looks at Alana. Studies her. Long moment. Silence stretching.

Then—she speaks. Voice strong. Clear. Not the croaking of age. But the power of centuries.

"You carry her blood. Her power. Her burden." A pause. "But do you carry her heart?"

*The test. The question. That determines everything.*

Alana steps forward. Meets the ancient eyes. Speaks truth.

"I carry her sacrifice. Her pain. Her love for her people. I don't know. If I carry her heart. But I'm willing to find out."

*Honest. Raw. Real. The only answer. Worth giving.*

Lyra studies her. Another long moment. Then—she smiles.

"Good answer. Child of my sister's line." She steps aside. "Welcome. To the Temple of the First Binding. Where everything began. And where. Perhaps. Everything will end."

*The doors open. Darkness inside. Ancient. Sacred. Dangerous.*

*The end. Or the beginning. Waiting within.*
