As I was spending time with Mu Ningxue and Ye Xinxia, time passed quikly and it was the start of School term and Ningxue already return to capita city. Today is the first day of My Magic High School,
"Mo Fan, come out quick or we will be leaving!" I shouted toward the house.
Ye Xinxia sat quietly in her wheelchair, a small, encouraging smile on her face, while Monkey—fidgeted beside me, adjusting his school bag for the tenth time. This idiot Mo Fan actually managed to oversleep on the most important day of his life.
"Coming, Yuzi!" Mo Fan finally burst through the door, nearly tripping over his own laces. "Sorry, Xinxia, Monkey... I was, uh, burning some incense for good luck."
I rolled my eyes, but I could see the slight tremor in his hands. He was trying to play it cool, but the weight of being a "science student" transmigrated into a world of magic was clearly crushing him. He didn't know if he even had the "talent" to awaken.
"It's fine, Brother Mo Fan," Xinxia said, her voice gentle as always, acting like a balm for his frayed nerves. "Now we should hurry and leave, or we will be late on our first day."
She was in her last year of middle school, her own awakening just a year away, yet she seemed the most composed of us all.
"Brother Fan, don't worry! You will definitely awaken some awesome magic," Monkey added, his voice high-pitched with his own brand of enthusiasm and nerves.
.....
As we arrived at the gates of Mingwen Girl's School, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the rowdy energy surrounding Mo Fan and Monkey. Here, the air felt lighter, filled with the chatter of young students unaware of the shadows that would eventually creep beneath their feet.
I looked up at the school buildings, my gaze lingering on the ground. In the original story, this was the site of the largest tunnel—the primary vein for the beast tide that would one day tear Bo City apart. I had already performed a discrete sweep of the area a few months back, using my own sensory abilities to ensure no unauthorized "excavations" had begun. For now, the earth was silent. Xinxia would be safe here, at least for this year.
"We're here, Xinxia," I said, stepping behind her wheelchair to help her over the curb.
"Thank you, Yuzi-ge," she murmured. She looked up at the school gates and then back at the three of us. Even though she wasn't the one awakening today, she seemed to carry our nervous energy on her shoulders. "Brother Fan, don't let what the others say get to you. You've worked hard."
Mo Fan scratched the back of his head, giving her a lopsided, slightly forced grin. "Don't worry, Xinxia. I've got enough incense in me to power a temple. I'll see you after school."
"See you after school, Xinxia," I said.
"Good luck, Yuzi-ge. Good luck, Brother Fan and brother Xiaohou" she whispered, her eyes lingering on me for a second longer before she turned away.
"Let's go, you two," I called out to Mo Fan and Monkey, who were already staring at the crowds of girls with varying degrees of awkwardness and curiosity.
....
The atmosphere in the hall was electric, a thick soup of teenage anxiety and raw ambition. Principal Zhu's voice droned on about the responsibility of mages, but I could see Mo Fan's leg bouncing next to me. He wasn't listening to a word; he was staring at his own palms like they were foreign objects.
Once the speech ended, the dam broke. We shuffled into Class 8, and the air grew even more tense as Xue Musheng stepped up to the podium.
"No. 1, Li Yuzi," he began, his eyes landing on me with a glint of pure professional greed. "As Yuzi has already awakened his magic a year ago, we will skip his turn. We'll start with the second place—Mu Bai, come up."
A ripple of whispers went through the room. Being an "early awakener" in Bo City was a mark of elite Talent, and I could feel Mu Bai's icy glare directed at the back of my head. He hated that he wasn't the center of attention.
Mu Bai stepped up, his face a mask of arrogance. As his hand touched the awakening stone, a chilling frost spread across the surface. Ice Element. The class erupted in cheers, and he walked back to his seat with a smug smirk, glancing at Mo Fan with pure disdain.
Next came the usual parade. Zhou Min's Fire Element burned bright, drawing a nod of approval from Teacher Xue. Soon it was Mo fan's turn, just then, the commotion started outside.
"Lightning! Someone in the next class awakened the Lightning Element!"
The room practically emptied. Everyone—including the teachers—rushed toward the windows or the hallway to catch a glimpse of Xu Zhaoting. It was the rarest of the basic elements, a guaranteed ticket to the big leagues.
In the chaos, the classroom became a ghost town. Mo Fan was the only one left standing by the awakening stone, his face pale, his hand hovering inches from the cold surface. He looked back at me, the "incense luck" clearly failing to calm his nerves now that the moment was here.
"Go on, Fan," I said, leaning against the back wall, crossing my arms. "The stage is empty. No one is watching but me. Let it out."
He took a deep breath and slammed his hand down.
At first, a violent purple spark danced across the stone—Lightning. But before it could stabilize, a fierce, deep crimson glow erupted from the center, swallowing the purple light in a silent roar of heat—Fire.
He stood there, frozen, his eyes wide as the dual colors spiraled within the stone. He quickly pulled his hand back, the glow fading just as the first few students started trickling back in, still gossiping about Xu Zhaoting.
"Fire Element," Teacher Xue called out as he returned, glancing at the lingering red tint on the stone, his mood improved, "Good Good, Mo Fan. Make sure to work hard and don't waste your talent."
Mo Fan just grinned, a look of pure, hidden triumph on his face. "Yeah, teacher. Just a normal Fire mage. Nothing special."
I chuckled to myself. If only they knew.
Mo Fan leaned in, his voice barely a breath. "Yuzi, please don't tell anyone about it. I don't need the whole school treating me like a science experiment."
"Relax, Fan. Your secret is safe with me," I whispered back with a wink. "I won't say a word until you're ready to shock the world yourself. For now, just enjoy being the 'underdog' who actually has a nuke in his pocket."
Teacher Xue Musheng stepped back up to the podium, tapping his chalk against the board to get everyone to stop gossiping about the Lightning guy next door.
"Alright, settle down! You've got your elements, now don't go thinking you're grand mages yet," Xue Musheng announced, looking halfway between proud and exhausted. "Now comes the part that actually requires a brain. We're going to talk about the Three Steps of Cultivation."
