Adelyn hadn't meant for the conversation to turn serious. She had only said whatever came to mind —anything that would give her an easy way out.

For a brief moment, she had become serious when Nigel built up that suspense around why Dylan chose to stay instead of walking away from her.
It was something she had been trying to understand from the very beginning. Yet no explanation had ever truly made sense.

Shouldn't he have had every reason to discard her?
Then why had he let her audacity slide?
When Nigel claimed he understood the reason, she had almost believed him.
But when she finally heard what he said—
Her lips pressed into a thin line as she stared at him.
"Calling me a devil is one thing," she said, "but how can you call him a devil as well? Do you even know who he is?"
Nigel shifted slightly in his seat before picking up his fork again.
"I don't need to know who he is to tell what he is."
