Chapter 56 - Epilogue : Six Months Later

The garden had changed.

Not dramatically—just... more. More colors. More life. More presence.

The hedge-dragon had grown to full size now, its metallic leaves gleaming in the sun, its stone eyes watching over the flowers. It had developed a personality—protective of the garden, suspicious of strangers, fond of children.

The Memory Tree's fruits chimed constantly, filled with new memories, new possibilities.

And in the center of it all, Althea sat on her bench, looking younger than she had in decades. Not young—never that—but less old. More present. More herself.

"You're staring," she said without looking up.

"Sorry." Evan sat beside her. "You look good."

"I feel good. Remembering suits me." She glanced at him. "You look tired."

"Long night. Ashe had questions."

"He asks a lot of questions."

"He's learning. He's... becoming." Evan watched as Ashe drifted through the garden, touching flowers, observing bees, trying to understand the small beauties of the world. "It's working. The training. The conversations."

"And you? Are you becoming?"

Evan thought about it. "I think so. I'm learning to listen. To things. To people. To myself."

"That's all any of us can do." Althea stood. "The north is stirring."

"I know."

"Will you go?"

"When I'm ready. When I've learned enough." He looked at her. "Will you be here when I get back?"

"I'll be here. The garden needs me." She smiled—a real smile, warm and knowing. "Go, Evan. Do what you need to do. Become what you need to become. The garden will wait."

He stood, looking out at the kingdom beyond the palace walls.

Somewhere to the north, something waited.

Something old. Something hungry. Something that needed... something.

A conversation, maybe.

An improvement.

A chance.

He touched the amulet at his chest—the Heart of Shadow, quiet now, learning patience.

"Ready when you are," he murmured.

And somewhere in the north, something stirred in answer.

But not yet.

Not today.

Today, there was a garden to tend. Friends to see. Coffee to drink.

Tomorrow would bring what it brought.

And Evan Carter, hero of accidental chaos, would be ready.

Probably.

Hopefully.

With enough coffee.
