Chapter 45 - Chapter 45. Tempering The Chains

I closed my eyes, letting the physical sensation of the rocky canyon fade away as I pulled my consciousness inward.

The transition was instant. The dry air was replaced by the cold, sterile atmosphere of my mindscape. I opened my eyes, my sandals clicking softly against the polished black obsidian floor of the throne room. The towering stone pillars stood just as I had last seen them, and the braziers roared to life with the same purple flames.

However, something felt fundamentally different.

The air was unspeakably heavy. Before, the ambient pressure of the Fox's chakra had been a suffocating weight. Now, it was a physical force, pressing against my skin like gravity had been dialed up to a hundred.

I looked toward the far end of the hall. The massive, translucent crimson barrier was still in place, acting as the boundary between my domain and his cage. But the entity behind it had changed.

He was five times as large. The mountain of orange fur practically glowed in the darkness, radiating an intense, blistering heat that warped the air inside his cage. His nine colossal tails swayed with a slow, hypnotic rhythm, each movement displacing enough ambient chakra to create small whirlwinds against the barrier.

Damn, this bastard's even bigger, I thought, observing the changes to him. Much bigger than I expected, too. No wonder he was mad about his chakra being taken from him. If he were a dungeon monster, it'd be like if he was a level 100 boss that lost all it's power and turned into a level 50 mini-boss.

High above his head, the familiar interface overlay flickered and updated itself in deep, blood-red letters.

[BOSS DETECTED: Kurama, Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (Complete / Sealed) - S-Rank]

Slowly but surely, the giant Fox lowered his massive head until he was eye-level with me. His crimson, slitted eyes burned with a chaotic mixture of ancient malice and sharp, calculating intelligence.

"So," his voice rumbled, the sheer volume of it vibrating the obsidian beneath my feet. "You actually did it."

I kept my posture relaxed despite the insane pressure. "I told ya I would," I responded. "I tend to keep my promises."

The Fox let out a low, vibrating growl, baring teeth the size of greatswords. "Don't get arrogant, brat. My other half remembers exactly what you did. Chaining me like a dog and commanding your shadowy abominations to pile upon me. The Fourth Hokage's seal is the only reason you are not currently a smear of ash on the canyon floor."

"I did what I had to do to get you in here," I replied with a shrug. "Besides, if I remember correctly, you're the one who told me to show you the true depths of this System of mine. I'd say bypassing the Shinigami and subduing your other half counts as a pretty solid demonstration, don't ya think?"

The Fox let out a heavy, dismissive hmph as a dark smirk pulled at the edges of his massive jaws.

"You possess a terrifying level of audacity," he stated, his tone shifting from outright hostility to what I could only assume was begrudging respect. "A mortal commanding the God of Death. A vessel holding absolute authority over souls. You truly are an anomaly."

He shifted his colossal weight, resting his chin on his front paws as he stared down at me.

"I saw the prompt your 'System' presented to you," he continued, his eyes narrowing. "It demands that you meet with me to unlock my chakra. But having the capacity to hold my complete power and having the strength to wield it are two entirely different things. My chakra is pure, concentrated hatred. It is poison to the weak-willed."

"That ain't nothing but another challenge," I responded, waving him off. "And I take challenges in stride. So, how's this gonna work? You gonna just give it to me, or what?"

Kurama's smirk widened into a sinister, jagged grin.

"I told you before, I'm no spectator," he rumbled darkly. "And I will not submit my power to a weakling. If you want to wield the might of the Nine-Tails, you will earn it."

A rush of adrenaline spiked through my veins as a massive, golden System screen violently materialized in the space between us.

[HIDDEN QUEST UPDATED: THE SOVEREIGN AND THE BEAST]:

Objective: Clear through nine progressive stages of the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra in single combat.

[NOTICE: SHADOW SOLDIER SUMMONING IS DISABLED FOR A MAJORITY OF THESE TRIALS.]

[TRIAL ONE (THE FIRST TAIL) IS READY TO INITIATE.]

[ATTEMPT NOW?]: Y/N

Wow, I whistled internally. Another trial of sorts. If this works like how the Uzumaki trials do, then the stat boosts per completion will be great… but, I don't know how long it'll take to complete them.

I forced myself to take a step back, letting logic override my urge to instantly click yes.

I just have too much on my plate right now, I mused. And it'd be suicide to face his tails right now, even if I've gotten a bit stronger. I've got to complete these gradually, but as soon as I possibly can.

I swiped the golden screen away and shoved my hands into my pockets.

"I think I'll pass for today," I said. "I've got a schedule to keep and an invasion to prepare for, after all. Keep those trials warmed up for me, though. We'll see what happens after the Exams are over."

Kurama blinked, genuine surprise flashing across his features.

"So your common sense has gotten sharper too," he mocked, though there was a hint of real approval in his deep voice. "Very well. Run along and play ninja. I will be waiting."

I opened my eyes, the familiar gray sky of the D-Rank canyon greeting me.

With the chakra transfer complete and my real-world schedule mapped out, I confirmed the System's prompt to leave. The moment my sandals hit the soft dirt of Konoha's forest, the cool night air washed over me. I took a deep breath, deciding to take a brief moment of rest to let my body adjust to the staggering new chakra density humming beneath my skin.

As I leaned against a thick oak tree, I closed my eyes and tapped into the [Shadow Link], checking in on the various Soldiers I had scattered throughout the village.

Everything was moving exactly as I wanted.

Orochimaru's spies were still frantically—and unsuccessfully—searching for me. Across the village, Sasuke and Neji were pushing themselves to the limit in their respective training regimens, entirely unaware of the massive scale of the conflict headed their way.

I switched perspectives to the Hokage building. Hayate's bloodied body had been discovered by a passing Jonin just minutes after my Soldier dropped him off. Hiruzen proved why he was a veteran of three ninja wars by having Hayate quietly transferred to an Anbu black-site ward for emergency surgery. It was a smart move that guaranteed Konoha retained the element of surprise against the Sound and Sand.

Finally, I checked on the Soldier observing the Sand siblings.

Gaara was pacing erratically in his assigned guest quarters. Through the Soldier's eyes, I could see the heavy, dark bags under his eyes and the way his hands twitched. He was mentally spiraling, his bloodlust peaking as he muttered to himself, arguing with the beast inside his head.

I frowned, breaking the connection.

Right, the Tanuki doesn't let him sleep, I recalled. Sleep deprivation on top of a murderous mass of chakra whispering in your ear 24/7 is basically torture. No wonder he's constantly tweaking out.

Since I was already changing the trajectory of this world, fixing Gaara was high on my priority list. And just beating him to a pulp wasn't going to cure his insomnia.

Maybe I can craft something to suppress Shukaku long enough to knock his ass out so he can get a full eight hours, I mused, pushing off the oak tree.

"System," I called out internally. "You got anything for that?"

A familiar golden chime rang in my head as a screen materialized.

[NOTICE: A HIGH-TIER SUPPRESSION ITEM CAN BE ACQUIRED AS A COMBAT REWARD.]

[HIDDEN QUEST UNLOCKED: THE SAND'S SALVATION]:

Objective: Defeat your first-round opponent, Chigiri, in the Chunin Exam Finals.

Reward: 'Tear of the Desert Priest' - A consumable artifact capable of inducing deep REM sleep and temporarily severing a Tailed Beast's connection to its host's consciousness.

Alright, alright, that's perfect, I thought. Now, all that's left to do is to get back to grinding.

I locked onto the [Waypoint Anchor Orb] I had left in the Uzumaki Catacombs.

[TRANSPORT ACTIVATED]

I was instantly transported back to the ancient archive room. I stepped up to the central pedestal where the adamantine sealing scroll was, and activated it.

I ain't got time to waste, I mused.

[CLAN TRIAL 2: EXTENSION & TRAJECTORY]

[ENTER TRIAL?]: Y/N

I confirmed 'Yes' without hesitation.

[COMMENCING IN 3... 2... 1...]

The floor beneath me instantly vanished.

"Whoa!" I shouted, instinctively flaring my chakra to stick onto something, but there was nothing to grab onto. I was in freefall.

The environment had shifted into a massive, seemingly bottomless chasm. Dozens of jagged stone pillars floated erratically in the open air, shifting and grinding against each other. High above, glowing crystal harrier birds darted through the cavern like erratic bats.

[TRIAL 2 OBJECTIVE: DESTROY 100 CRYSTAL HARRIERS.]

[RESTRICTION: NINJUTSU DISABLED. YOU MUST USE THE ADAMANTINE SEALING CHAINS TO TRAVERSE THE CHASM AND STRIKE YOUR TARGETS.]

So I'm gonna be training like Spider-Man, huh? I thought, the wind rushing past my ears as I plummeted toward the abyss. Fine by me.

I pulsed chakra into my arms.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Adamantine Sealing Chains (Stage 1)]

Four black-and-purple chains erupted from my flesh. With a sharp flick of my wrist, I commanded one of the chains to shoot outward. It cracked through the air like a whip, wrapping tightly around the nearest floating stone pillar.

The sudden deceleration yanked my shoulder hard, but my massive [CON] stat completely absorbed the joint strain. I swung like a pendulum, launching myself off the pillar and higher into the chasm.

"Alright," I grinned, locking my eyes onto a glowing hawk darting through the air fifty feet above me. "Let's see what kind of range these things really have."

*******

My time in the chasm was a lesson in clumsy physics.

The crystal harriers were fast, erratic, and aggressively territorial. The moment I launched my first chain to drag myself upward, a flock of three harriers screeched, diving straight toward my face with razor-sharp beaks.

I twisted mid-air, whipping my left chain outward to lasso a grinding stone pillar just as a harrier sliced past my ear. The bird's wings clipped my shoulder, leaving a superficial scratch that was instantly sealed shut by my [CON] stat.

Using the chains like a hybrid grappling hook and whip required an entirely different kind of brain-to-muscle coordination. If I threw them too straight, they lacked the momentum to wrap securely around the shifting pillars. If I whipped them too wide, they lost velocity and missed the harriers entirely.

By the end of the first couple hours, my arms felt like lead, my counter-attack accuracy was sitting at a dismal thirty percent, and I had only managed to shatter twenty of the hundred targets.

I don't think I'm making as much progress as I'd like, I panted, clinging upside down to the underside of a massive floating boulder as a swarm of harriers zoomed past overhead. This is gonna take a lot longer than I thought.

The hours after that became a blur of kinetic geometry.

I stopped relying on full-arm swings and instead focused on subtle wrist flicks and micro-adjustments powered by my chakra. I learned to use the recoil of one chain anchoring onto a falling rock to slingshot myself vertically, spinning 360 degrees in mid-air to whip out a second chain with lethal, pinpoint accuracy.

CRACK!

The black-and-purple links lashed through the air like a striking viper, wrapping cleanly around a glowing crystal harrier and pulverizing its core into a cloud of sparkling blue dust.

[HARRIERS ELIMINATED: 54 / 100]

As my [DEX] and chakra control adapted to the ridiculous constraints of the trial, the chasm stopped feeling like a descending deathtrap and started feeling like a floating playground. I was vaulting off bouncing debris, weaving the chains into a protective web to deflect incoming crystal quills, and snapping them outward with enough tension to shatter stone.

By the time the number of targets dwindled down to a more manageable amount, the remaining harriers had learned to swarm. Thirty of them banded together, forming a synchronized, buzzing vortex of crystalline death that blocked the paths of my chains.

"Oh, you think numbers are gonna save you?" I challenged, dropping straight down into the center of the swarm.

Before they could dive, I slammed both palms together, channeling chakra outward.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Adamantine Sealing Chains (Stage 1) - Quadruple Extension]

Four more distinct, crackling chains burst from my arms, spinning outward in a terrifying, 360-degree lethal perimeter. I whipped them in a continuous, high-speed motion, forming a tempest-like whirlwind of dark metal.

KSSSHHHHK!

The harriers didn't stand a chance. The rotating wall of adamantine shredded through the swarm in seconds, turning the crystalline flock into a blinding snowstorm of glowing dust.

[TRIAL 2 OBJECTIVE CLEARED: 100 / 100 HARRIERS DESTROYED.]

[TRIAL 2 CLEARED: EXTENSION & TRAJECTORY]

[REWARDS: +35 DEX, +75,000 XP, +275,000 Ryo]

[RYO BALANCE: 32,577,650 → 32,852,650 RYO]

A blinding flash of golden light consumed the chasm, wiping away the floating pillars and the abyss.

When the light faded, I was standing back in the archive room. My breathing was heavy, but the exhaustion was instantly washed away by a euphoric wave of system notifications chiming in my head. My reaction times felt sharper, my muscles humming with an effortless, fluid grace.

How long has it been since I went in there? I questioned.

[TIME ELAPSED: 4 DAYS, 3 HOURS]

Four days?! I gasped internally. That took way too long. I need to delegate some things if more of these trials are gonna take as long.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Shadow Clone Jutsu]

A cloud of white smoke cleared to reveal a carbon-copy of me, grinning back at my real body.

"Alright, listen up," I told my clone, pointing a thumb at the glowing blue interface hovering in my peripheral vision. "We're on a massive time crunch here, so I need you on gathering duty for the [Holy Water of Life]."

The clone mirrored my serious expression, swiping a hand through the air to bring up his own shared version of the interface.

[RECIPE: HOLY WATER OF LIFE]:

1. Purified Spirit Spring Water (0/1)[Located in C-Rank Gate]

2. Heartwood of an Elder Treant (0/1) [Located in B-Rank Gate]

3. Tear of a Gargoyle (0/1) [Located in A-Rank Gate]

"With our stats—and you gaining 5% of my total [CON] defense thanks to the [The One-Man Army] title—the first two shouldn't be too difficult to deal with," I instructed, crossing my arms. "But that Gargoyle Tear one's probably going to be a massive pain to get, so I'll do that one personally later."

"Gotcha," the clone smirked, already equipping a set of spare kunai. "What about backup? Am I rolling solo?"

"Of course not," I replied, letting my chakra flare slightly. "COME FORTH!"

The shadows stretched across the archive room, rapidly elongating before peeling upward into fifty, three-dimensional forms. Rango, my elite Lizardman Commander, and my Giant Red Tiger materialized alongside dozens of armored Infantry Goblins and a squad of Ice Warriors.

"Rango, you're leading alongside him," I commanded. The massive lizardman let out a low, acknowledging rumble, bowing his head. "Keep the clone alive as long as possible. Let the others handle the enemy-clearing while you two focus on the core items that need collecting."

I stepped closer to the clone, my expression hardening. "Now, here is the most important part. If you run into any problems in these dungeons and if anything completely overwhelms you... then just die."

The clone blinked, his smirk faltering slightly. "Goddamn my ninja, what'd I do to you?!"

I facepalmed. "Maybe I should have phrased that better," I said.

"I mean it's okay for you to just disperse, because I'll be having Rango and the others stay in the dungeons on the chance that you do," I explained. "I'll have them completely conceal themselves in the environment, then I can just use [Shadow Exchange] to teleport straight to their location."

Understanding dawned on the clone's face. "If it's too much for me to handle, they become an untraceable beacon for you. Got it."

"Alright," I nodded, tossing him the two Gate Keys. "Go get us those ingredients."

With a sharp salute, the clone and the detachment of Shadows vanished when the Key activated.

Alright, with that now taken care of, I thought, rolling my shoulders and turning my attention back to the scroll in the center of the room. Let's get back into the thick of things.

I drank a [Chakra Potion] and stepped up to the glowing adamantine sealing scroll, placing my hand over it again.

[CLAN TRIAL 3: ADAMANTINE HARDENING]

[ENTER TRIAL?]: Y/N

I confirmed 'Yes'.

[COMMENCING IN 3... 2... 1...]

The room dissolved around me again. This time, I didn't fall. Instead, I found myself standing in the center of a massive, claustrophobic spherical chamber made of smooth, gray stone. The room was completely enclosed, devoid of any doors or exits.

As I scanned the area, a series of mechanical clicks echoed through the room. Hundreds of intricately carved nozzles smoothly protruded from the walls, floor, and ceiling, all of them aiming directly at the center of the room. Exactly where I was currently standing.

[TRIAL 3 OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE ELEMENTAL ONSLAUGHT.]

[RESTRICTION: EVASION IS IMPOSSIBLE. YOU MUST WEAVE AND HARDEN THE ADAMANTINE SEALING CHAINS INTO AN IMPENETRABLE SHIELD TO WITHSTAND THE BARRAGE FOR 3 HOURS.]

Wait... three hours of straight tanking?! I thought, my eyes widening as the nozzles began to glow with volatile, concentrated chakra. What kind of shit is thi—

Before I could even process the sheer volume of attacks powering up around me, the room erupted.

Streams of fire, highly compressed wind blades, and erratic blasts of piercing lightning shot from the walls simultaneously. It was an omnidirectional tsunami of elemental destruction.

"Oh, you've gotta be shitting me!" I yelled, dropping into a low stance and violently pushing every ounce of my chakra into my arms.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Adamantine Sealing Chains (Stage 2) - Omnidirectional Weave]

Eight thick chains exploded from my body, whipping around me in a frantic, spiraling frenzy. I manipulated their trajectories, crossing and overlapping the links at blinding speed to form a tight, spherical dome around my body just as the first wave of elemental attacks hit.

BOOOOOOM!

The force of the impact rattled my teeth, dropping me to one knee inside the dome. The heat inside the metal sphere instantly skyrocketed, turning the enclosed space into a suffocating oven.

Whoa! I screamed internally, squeezing my eyes shut as I focused entirely on the density of the metal.

The chains groaned and hissed in protest as the continuous streams of fire and wind battered the exterior. Tiny slivers of lightning arced through the gaps in the links, singeing my clothes and biting into my skin.

If I lose focus for even a second, the metal melts, and I'm done for, I thought, pouring more chakra into the chains. I have to compress the chakra tighter and strengthen the density.

The purple-and-black metal of the chains began to glow with a furious, cherry-red heat, but the dome held. As the minutes slowly ticked by, the true, grueling nature of the third trial set in. It wasn't a test of reflexes or speed; it was a pure, agonizing test of willpower, endurance, and raw, unyielding durability against a clock that refused to speed up.
