Chapter 34 - Chapter 34. An Overdue Meeting

"So... the brat finally decides to visit..." his deep, demonic voice echoed through the chamber, the sheer force of it making the murky water ripple violently against my feet.

Before I could even open my mouth to reply, a familiar blue screen forcefully materialized in the darkness between us.

[HOSTILE CHAKRA ENVIRONMENT DETECTED]

[OVERWRITING MENTAL LANDSCAPE... ASSERTING MONARCH'S DOMAIN]

I blinked.

In the span of a single heartbeat, the world around me violently glitched. The ankle-deep water instantly evaporated, solidifying into polished black obsidian beneath my feet. The suffocating darkness receded as the narrow, rusted sewer rapidly expanded outward, transforming into a cavernous, imposing hall. It looked exactly like a throne room, complete with towering pillars of dark stone and braziers that suddenly roared to life with cold, purple flames.

Even the rusted iron gates and paper seal that held the beast vanished, shattering into a million digital fragments before instantly reforming into a massive, translucent, crimson barrier that was pushed to the far end of the hall.

I whistled at the sight. Wow, new digs, I thought internally, amazed by the ambiance.

Even though the setting had changed, I could still feel the sheer, suffocating weight of the Fox's chakra pressing down on me. It was a massive, nearly infinite ocean of concentrated hate and malice that seemed to make the very air vibrate.

As my eyes adjusted to the shadows at the far end of the hall, the true scale of the beast finally came into focus behind the massive crimson barrier.

Goddamn! This muthafucka's huge! I thought, staring up at the mountain of orange fur and the nine massive tails swaying slowly in the darkness.

Floating directly above his head in deep, blood-red letters was a familiar UI overlay:

[BOSS DETECTED: Kurama, Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (Sealed) - S-Rank]

Huh, how 'bout that, I thought, imagining how difficult a battle against him would be.

I kept my face carefully neutral, tucking my hands into my pockets. "Well, it's not like I exactly had a choice in the matter."

The giant Fox narrowed his glowing red eyes, leaning his massive snout closer to the crimson barrier. "You mean that little 'System' of yours?"

I blinked in genuine surprise. "You can see it?"

"Of course I can see it!" he rumbled, his deep voice echoing off the stone walls. "And it all stems from the period in which you self-destructed."

Self-destruct—Oh, the confetti tag incident, I realized, wincing internally. Man, I ain't ever living that down, am I?

"During that moment, this space experienced a sharp snap that plunged everything into darkness," the Fox continued, his eyes burning into mine. "And when everything brightened up again, this wretched sewer had been overwritten into this bizarre fortress. Not only could I not push my chakra out to 'see' what was occurring, but this new barrier blocked my every attempt to summon you here until you reached whatever arbitrary threshold it demanded."

"Man, that's crazy," I murmured, a hand rubbing my chin.

It must have been the System's firewall blocking his chakra from corrupting me when I was in my volatile state, I deduced rapidly. So, based on how paranoid he's being, he probably still can't access any of my past memories, but he can see what I actively see…Interesting.

"What's more odd is the subsequent change in your personality," the Fox noted, his voice lowering into a dangerous growl.

I raised a brow, flashing him a certain, wide grin and pointing two thumbs at my chest. "What do you mean? I'm the same regular-degular guy I've always been. Ya know? Believe it!"

"Save your lies for those pathetic humans in that village!" he spat, the crimson barrier flaring with violent static from the force of his voice. "You've gone from a naïve, hyperactive brat to a patient opportunist in the span of days. You are not the child I knew of before. You are something else entirely."

I stared at the massive Fox for a long moment. Then, I slowly let the exaggerated grin drop from my face and let out a heavy sigh.

"Yea, ight, so what?" I challenged, meeting his colossal gaze without flinching. "I'm still Naruto Uzumaki. I'm just… well, you can say… a different version of him. It doesn't change the fact that I'm here and I'll continue on my path, no matter what."

"And what path is that?"

"The path to greatness, of course," I stated plainly. "And the one that continues to keep me alive as I try to achieve it. And if I continue to live, so do you."

The Fox let out a heavy, dismissive hmph. "That System is something unique to this world. You have gained an assortment of resources and abilities. Like those Soldiers of yours bathed in shadows."

"How sweet it is, huh?" I said, spreading my arms out and grinning.

"It's surely to get revealed at some point," Kurama warned darkly. "Humans tend to put a stop to things that get too powerful beyond their control. Will you be able to handle that?"

"Only time will tell," I shrugged, letting my arms fall back to my sides. "I was always going to be a target in some way, shape, or form. That's why it's imperative for me to continue on this path."

"A path of inevitable chaos?" he questioned.

"A path of choice," I countered firmly. "Choices are the driving force of everything I do. Everyone has one, it just depends on how they go about it. Even you."

"What choice did I have that led me here?!" Kurama scoffed indignantly, his tails thrashing violently behind him. "I was given no options. I was but a spectator in someone else's."

"Then here's your moment to make one right now," I countered.

Kurama paused, a certain look of confusion flashing across his terrifying features. "Meaning?"

"Help me out in the future from time to time, and I'll do something for you."

"Help you?!" he questioned, a mocking edge returning to his voice. "What would you need my help with? Your System is pretty much all you need."

"That's not true," I corrected. "I don't know everything that truly exists in the world. But, as a being that's lived as long as you have, you probably know some hidden things about it."

Kurama scoffed again, though the hostility had dialed back a fraction. "The world has changed a great deal because of you humans. There's no guarantee that anything I say would be accurate."

"That's fine," I said, casually waving his concern off. "Any information is great information."

The giant Fox stared at me in silence for a long time, clearly trying to figure out my angle. "What do you have that would interest me anyways?"

I looked him dead in the eye. "Other than a way to get your other half back, I can eventually free you from my body without killing us both, I'm pretty sure."

The heavy air in the throne room went completely still. Kurama froze, his massive red eyes widening in genuine shock before narrowing into a glare of profound suspicion.

"Why would you help me?" he demanded, his voice dangerously low. "I have caused you more grief than you know."

"Oh, you mean you killing my folks?" I asked nonchalantly.

A look of complete surprise crossed Kurama's face.

"Yeah, I know about it. But it happened, and there's nothing to be done about it," I said smoothly. "What am I supposed to do? Toil over it forever? Pass. I've got to keep moving forward. If I didn't, my future enemies would prosper, and I can't let that happen. Plus, I believe in the choice of freedom. Something I believe everyone should have. So, what do you say? I scratch your back, and you scratch mine?"

For a moment, the hall was entirely silent, save for the crackling of the purple braziers. Then, Kurama finally let loose.

"HAHAHAHA!"

His dark, booming laugh echoed through the chamber, vibrating violently in my chest and shaking the obsidian floor beneath my feet. He laughed with a deep, genuine amusement that had probably been absent for decades

"You are a very strange child," he rumbled, a dark smirk pulling at his massive jaws.

I shrugged. "Been called worse. I'll probably be called even worse in the future."

Kurama lowered his head back down, resting his chin near the humming crimson barrier as he stared at me, the burning hatred in his eyes finally replaced by a sharp, calculating intrigue.

"Then show me… Naruto Uzumaki," he said. "Show me the true depths of this System of yours."

"With pleasure," I replied, offering the giant Fox a lazy two-finger salute.

The purple flames of the braziers suddenly flared, and the dark obsidian of the throne room shattered into a million floating pixels of blue light.

My eyes snapped open.

The suffocating atmosphere of the new boss room vanished, instantly replaced by the cool air of our dorm in the central tower. I was staring up at the unremarkable plaster ceiling. I sat up slightly and glanced around. Across the room, Sasuke was still meticulously running a whetstone down the edge of his kunai, and Sakura was still dead to the world on her mattress. The time dilation was wild; what felt like a monumental conversation with a demonic entity had only taken a few seconds in the real world.

I leaned back against the headboard, a satisfied smirk crossing my face, knowing that Kurama was eventually going to be on my side.

But I still had a lot of work to do.

Go, I commanded mentally, reaching out to my shadow army. Locate the Uzumaki Shrine Temple. Search on the outskirts of the village.

While I rested my physical body, my senses linked with the Soldiers I dispatched into the night. It didn't take them long to find it. Through their eyes, I saw a hidden, ruined shrine overtaken by vines and moss. I found it incredibly interesting that the Uzumaki Clan had actually established a foothold here in Konoha before their destruction. I couldn't help but wonder if more of the clan would have emigrated here had Uzushio survived.

The entrance featured a massive, weathered replica of the Uzumaki clan's swirling spiral symbol. The building itself had fallen into severe ruin over time, but my Soldiers easily slipped inside, phasing through the deteriorating walls and into the main storage temple.

Hanging on a raised wooden podium, positioned beneath connected clan symbols and ornate black flames, were twenty-seven demonic masks. They all looked eerily similar to one another—horned, fanged, and deeply unsettling.

I'll just take them all after the preliminaries, I decided, not wanting to risk triggering any lingering Fuinjutsu traps blindly. I commanded a single Soldier to sink into the floorboards and wait there so I could just use [Shadow Exchange] when I had the time.

With that sorted, I shifted my focus to another connection in my mind.

"Beru, report. What did our spy find out?"

His raspy, echoing voice filled my mind. "My Liege. The one known as Kabuto met with his master, Orochimaru and they discussed a lot."

Over the next few minutes, Beru relayed the entire conversation, and the sheer scope of Orochimaru's paranoia almost made me laugh.

First, Orochimaru was intensely interested in Sasuke's body because it seemed like he was actively resisting the Curse Mark without even a struggle. What Orochimaru didn't know was that my potions had completely maxed out his health and recovery, sharpening his focus and making it easier to dismiss whatever negative temptation the mark was designed to feed off of.

But the best part was Orochimaru's reaction to me. When Kabuto reported the indescribable pressure I had unleashed on the foreign Genin, Orochimaru had been visibly irritated. Given that he was already upset by what I showed him from our encounter, he deduced that a Genin couldn't possibly possess that kind of killing intent without being specifically trained by someone in high authority within the village. His conclusion? Danzo Shimura was training me in secret. Orochimaru even said that if I seemed like a potential threat to his future plans, they needed to plan around eliminating me quickly during the upcoming Invasion.

But Orochimaru's plans for the invasion were far more expansive than I anticipated. And that was all because more foreign Genin had made it to the tower. Orochimaru had planted sleeper agents within various teams and among the Leaf civilians, creating a Trojan Horse of sorts, which would activate when the invasion kicked off. His agents were being ordered to attack the civilian shelters, tear down defensive infrastructure, and attack the stadium from the inside out.

Kabuto had also reported that Iwa ninjas were allegedly mapping out the Leaf's defenses to march in for a potential invasion in the future. However, if Orochimaru's invasion went off without a hitch, then they would probably come storming in immediately to completely finish off the Leaf. Something Orochimaru didn't mind happening at all.

On top of that, Orochimaru had ordered Kabuto to orchestrate "accidents" for any remaining Ame Genin. He ordered this because he knew Pain was the hidden leader of Ame and the leader of the Akatsuki, who wanted him dead based on how he left the organization. Orochimaru ultimately wanted the Genin eliminated to blind Pain from getting any potential information on him.

But I couldn't let that happen.

If Pain lost all his Genin and potential spies, he might send even more Akatsuki members to investigate. Which could potentially lead to the village being destroyed, and I couldn't just leave and risk becoming a Missing-nin because the [Spiritual Contract] I had inadvertently created with Hiruzen would erase my soul in an instant.

So, I issued new orders immediately. My Soldiers would secretly guard the Ame Genin and mitigate these "accidents," keeping enough of them alive to prevent Pain from getting paranoid. Furthermore, I would deploy my army into the civilian shelters during the invasion to completely stonewall Orochimaru's Trojan Horse maneuver.

Beru also mentioned a smaller side-plot: Kumo ninja were plotting to kidnap a Hyuga who didn't have the Caged Bird Seal. Since Hanabi was always on 24/7 watch, I easily deduced their only viable target was Hinata and noted that I'd need to drop a Soldier in her shadow at some point as assurance.

Over the next couple of days, I spent a lot of time wandering the halls of the tower to stretch my legs and scout the competition during the break period.

Leaning against a railing on the second floor, I spotted the Sand Siblings, who had arrived early on the first day. Gaara stood completely motionless, his arms crossed over his chest, staring blankly at the wall.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Observe]

[NAME: Gaara]

[STATUS: Host to Shukaku, One-Tailed Tanuki - High Level Threat]

[WARNING: Extreme emotional instability detected. Sand Armor density exceeds normal Genin parameters.]

A high level threat, huh? How interesting, I thought, observing the auburn-haired boy. Will the Shukaku fight also be S-Rank like Kurama or will it be lower because he wouldn't fully be in control? I mused before closing the prompt and shrugging. Only time will tell.

Further down the hall, I spotted the Sound trio—Dosu, Zaku, and Kin. They looked a little worse for wear, but Zaku's arms were completely intact. Since Sasuke hadn't broken them, the Sound Genin were going into the preliminaries much fresher, which could potentially spell doom for everyone else.

Finally, the third and last day for participants to reach the tower arrived.

Sitting cross-legged on my bed, I opened my System interface. I had 26 unassigned Stat Points accumulated from my Soldiers' passive grinding.

I dumped 20 points directly into my [INT] stat to hit the final skill threshold.

[STAT ALLOCATION CONFIRMED]

[INT THRESHOLD OF 550 REACHED!]

A sudden, sharp coolness washed over my brain. My thoughts accelerated, processing information at a rate that felt almost precognitive.

[NEW SKILL ACQUIRED: Impure World Reincarnation (Edo Tensei)]

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED...]

[SKILL MODIFIED: The requirements for Edo Tensei have been merged with the Shadow Monarch class. Living human sacrifices are no longer required.]

[NEW REQUIREMENT: To resurrect a soul, the Host must permanently sacrifice one Shadow Soldier to act as the vessel. Once sacrificed, the Soldier cannot be regenerated.]

A wide grin spread across my face. It was a steep cost, but being able to bypass the human sacrifice requirement was worth it.

I could just use my lowest-ranked Soldiers to summon Minato, I mused internally. From there, I could use the [Four Symbols Seal] technique to extract the other half of Kurama from him, transferring it into my own body with the System's help, which would ultimately net me the seal key.

"Hopefully it works," I said, stretching my arms above my head.

"System," I projected internally. "Give me another attribute analysis. What can I do with my current stats, and what are my next thresholds?"

[PROCESSING...]

[ATTRIBUTE ANALYSIS GENERATED]:

LEVEL: 205

STR (Strength): 380

Classification: Kinetic Anomaly / Elite Jonin Power.

Capabilities: A standard Taijutsu exchange with an Elite Jonin will result in their weapons shattering and their bones fracturing under the sheer kinetic weight of your blows. You can uproot massive trees or shatter Earth-Style defensive walls with casual exertion. You also don't need chakra enhancement to exert destructive force.

CON (Constitution): 420

Classification: Juggernaut / S-Rank Vitality.

Capabilities: Your body has become incredibly dense. Standard ninja tools and C to B-Rank Ninjutsu will dissipate against your skin with minimal damage. If an Elite Jonin manages to hit you with an A-Rank jutsu, your passive regeneration will knit the flesh and muscle back together in seconds. Conventional ninja poisons and fatigue toxins are burned out of your system instantly.

DEX (Dexterity): 421

Classification: Elite Jonin (Teleportation burst with [Dash]).

Capabilities: You have eliminated all physical drag and wasted movement. To an Elite Jonin, your standard movements leave afterimages, mimicking a high-level Body Flicker without the chakra cost. You can effortlessly evade supersonic projectiles or intercept them mid-flight. Activating [DASH] allows you to completely blindside opponents before they can weave a single hand sign.

INT (Intelligence): 550

Classification: Cognitive Overdrive / Abyssal Chakra Pool.

Capabilities: You perceive high-speed combat in fractions of a second. You can perfectly deconstruct the chakra network flow of an enemy's jutsu just by watching them weave signs, allowing you to master any non-Kekkei Genkai technique instantly. Your Chakra reserves are so vast they mimic the density of a Tailed Beast, allowing for the endless bombardment of A-Rank and S-Rank Ninjutsu without exhaustion.

WIS (Wisdom): 370

Classification: Omniscient Sensor / Genjutsu Bastion.

Capabilities: You don't just sense chakra; you feel the ambient malice, emotional spikes, and intent of every living being within a massive radius. Ambush tactics against you are statistically impossible. Your mindscape is guarded by an ironclad firewall—any Genjutsu below A-Rank will instantly shatter upon contact, often causing psychic blowback to the caster.

CHA (Charisma): 373

Classification: Sovereign's Gravity / Supreme Killing Intent.

Capabilities: Your mere presence warps the atmosphere of a room. When you unleash your full [Bloodlust], the air becomes thick and suffocating. Average Chunin will collapse into unconsciousness, and even hardened Elite Jonin will experience involuntary biological panic (tremors, hyperventilation). You project the undeniable gravity of a Monarch.

[LEVEL PROGRESSION ALERT: You are approaching Level 220. Reaching this threshold will allow you to defeat multiple Jonin-level ninjas with ease, and trigger a Shadow Army evolution.]

Ooo, I'm liking the sound of that, I thought, rubbing my hands together. Just 15 levels to go, should be a cinch.

[WARNING: To safely contain both halves of the Nine-Tails without severe physical degradation to the Player's CON must reach a minimum threshold of 500.]

Ahhh, It's always something, huh? I noted, dismissing the screens. Eh, it's not that big of a deal though.I'll just have to use the SP that I'm going to save up from the month-long break for it.

Before I could strategize any further, three sharp knocks echoed against our dorm room door.

Sakura, who had been quietly reviewing a small medical text on her bed, marked her page and stood up. Sasuke, who had been doing one-handed push-ups near the window to keep his blood pumping, immediately pushed himself to his feet, dropping into a relaxed but alert stance.

"Team 7," a muffled proctor's voice called out from the hallway. "The five days are up. All surviving teams are to report to the central arena immediately. The next phase is about to begin."

I slid off the bed, adjusting myself with a relaxed stretch.

And here we go, I thought internally as the team and I made our way out of the room.
