Chapter 26 - Chapter 26. The Gathering Storm

A month and a half flew by in a blur, the time completely occupied by D-Rank missions, intense training, and non-stop dungeon grinding.

The village had completely transformed. The frantic construction projects I had noticed upon our return from the Land of Spring had blossomed into massive, newly erected grandstands, expanded arenas, and fortified infrastructural quarters. Kakashi had finally let the cat out of the bag a few weeks into the construction, confirming what I already knew: Konoha was hosting the Chunin Exams, and the scale was going to be massive.

Hearing that we were being considered for entry into a grand international event of this scale had drastically shifted the dynamic of Team 7.

Sakura was constantly on edge. It wasn't the flat-out terror she had displayed immediately after Doto's death, but rather a rigid, wary alertness whenever she was around me. She acted like a civilian who had suddenly realized she was walking next to an unpinned grenade waiting to go off in a crowded room. The mere thought of what she might see me do next made her intensely anxious.

It might seem like a bad thing at face value, but she was a lot more focused in combat, so there's that.

Sasuke, on the other hand, had gone completely off the deep end. The combination of realizing how massive the power gap was between us and the impending challenges from the Exams had turned him brutally obsessive. During our team exercises, he pushed himself until his knuckles bled, trying desperately to emulate my sheer physical efficiency. He was stripping away all his wasted movements, hyper-fixated on catching up to a teammate who hadn't even needed jutsu to crush an A-Rank threat.

I didn't think this was necessarily a bad thing because, despite his intensity, he was developing. So, I mostly left them to their own devices. I kept things professionally casual, showing up for work and doing my part, but not lingering after training to build bonds and connections with them. I was far too busy capitalizing on the month-and-a-half period to bring my level up and prepare for the upcoming chaos that would eventually unfold.

One result of the time period was my level shooting up from 174 to 188. And with it came a massive influx of Stat Points, prompting me to finally cash in the 100 SP I had saved up from the Land of Spring mission. I dumped all of it directly into my Intelligence stat, watching it jump from 330 to a staggering 430, unlocking the skill thresholds and gaining the ability to perform and understand the [Bringer of Darkness Jutsu], and the [Four Symbols Seal] technique.

When I achieved the [Four Symbols Seal] something unexpected happened: I unlocked a hidden quest:

[HIDDEN QUEST UNLOCKED: Two Halves of a Whole]

Objective: The seal upon your stomach contains only the Yang half of the Nine-Tails. Locate the Shinigami's Mask to learn how to extract the Yin half of Kurama from the Reaper Death Seal.

Reward: The key to the seal.

My eyes almost launched out of my skull after seeing that. I realized I had obtained two incredibly powerful techniques that were guaranteed to be used in the impending clash between Orochimaru and the Third Hokage. Which made me briefly debate whether or not I should intervene and save the Old Man when the invasion kicked off. I wasn't super attached to Hiruzen like canon Naruto was, but I didn't exactly want him to die at the hands of that freak-ass ninja, either. However, his death was the catalyst for getting Tsunade back to the village. Ultimately, I decided to wait and see how events unfolded before making a decision.

I also had gained a fresh batch of 315 SP from the last month and a half of grinding, which I planned to hold onto for the day of the invasion. Financially, I was practically a walking Daimyo. Factoring in the passive income from my Shadow Army's dungeon diving, even after subtracting a 1,000,000-Ryo investment, my bank account sat comfortably at around 36,520,000 Ryo.

That 1,000,000-Ryo expense had been entirely worth it. I had purchased five sets of [Shadow-Chakra Armor] from the System Store, completely outfitting myself, my Lizardman Commander, my Giant Red Tiger, my highest-level Ice Warrior, and my new Armored Polar Bear. The sleek, midnight-black plating offered ridiculously high resistance to both Ninjutsu and physical attacks. I could run through two [Great Fireball Jutsu] attacks without getting even a scratch on me.

My preparations didn't stop there. Over the past few weeks, I had spent my free time running errands across the village, and surprisingly uncovered some long-term hidden quests.

Such as when I had stopped by a high-end clothing boutique in one of the wealthier districts. When they saw my beat-up orange jumpsuit, the snobbish clerks had practically tried to shoo me out the door. That was, until I threw my [Ninja World Cotton Fabric]—the quality practically glowing—onto the counter alongside a thick stack of Ryo. Their entire demeanors flipped instantly, and they were currently tailoring me a custom, highly durable combat outfit for the Exams.

Next, I dropped by Ichiraku Ramen to hand Teuchi the [Tonkotsu Broth of Power] recipe, and told him it was given to me in the Land of Spring by some merchant. It wasn't long until he had integrated it into his menu, and his business skyrocketed even more among the shinobi due to the broth's insane chakra-restoring properties.

And the System awarded me with the prompt:

[HIDDEN SUB-QUEST UNLOCKED: Recipe Scout]

Objective: Collect and deliver rare recipes to chefs, merchants, and artisans to earn an incremental permanent increase to [INT] per recipe delivered.

Reward: +5 INT permanently per delivery.

Then, while moving through the village, I even ran into Tazuna and his men. They had been hired as extra contractors to help build the new Exam infrastructure. Tazuna greeted me warmly, happily informing me that the Land of Waves was thriving thanks to Team 7. It made me reflect on my first real taste of the Shadow Monarch's powers, and how far I had come since the bridge.

But the village wasn't just filled with friendly faces.

A few days ago, I sensed an unusual chakra signature tailing me from the shadows. It didn't feel like a normal ANBU tracker. It felt like an empty void—a cold, stagnant puddle of chakra completely devoid of human emotion or fluctuation. It was a Root shinobi. Danzo was finally having his operatives thoroughly observe me. With my file heavily classified and my recent accomplishments stacking up, it was only a matter of time.

I was actually pondering how to deal with Danzo's creepy stalkers when Anko literally ambushed me in the street, dragging me by my collar to a dango shop and forcing me to foot the bill.

I tried to pry some information out of her regarding how these expanded Exams would be structured, but she kept her mouth firmly shut, only promising with a sadistic grin that it would be "way more bloody and exciting than previous years."

As she aggressively chewed on her dango, my eyes landed on her shoulder, right where Orochimaru's Curse Mark rested. I already had the [Spectral Lotus Petal]. I internally asked the System what the other two items were to complete the [Soul Purge Elixir].

The System prompted that the last two items were both Boss Drops from A-Rank Gates. I already had the A-Rank Key for the now-known [Crystallized Sage Resin] Gate sitting in my inventory. The Key for [Venom of the White Orochi], however, would be granted as a System Reward upon surviving the second phase of the Chunin Exams.

The cure was well within reach.

And to ensure I was ready for every quest I wanted accomplished, I also dispatched three of my stealthiest Lizardmen Soldiers to the Land of Whirlpool. So that I could get the full scope of the Land of Eddies and the surrounding areas around it, to ultimately transport there and use the [Torn Map of the Eddy] to start the Adamantine Sealing Chains quest. I planned to tackle those three specific, convoluted dungeons during the one-month training break between the Exam Preliminaries and the Finals.

Lastly, I had pulled three unbound weapons out of my loot boxes and dungeons to give to Tenten to complete my Arms Dealer sub-quest: the [Storm-Tethered Kunai] (a heavy blade attached to an electrified razor-wire), the [Twin Crescent Warblades] (hooked swords that bypass standard blocking by curving around a target's guard), and the [Gale-Force Iron Fan] (a collapsible metallic fan capable of violently deflecting C-Rank projectiles with a single swing). I was going to deliver them when I saw her at the Exams.

Everything was perfectly set.

A couple of days before the Exams officially began, the floodgates opened. Shinobi from all over the continent began pouring into Konoha.

And with it came the opportunity to see exactly what the other nations were bringing to the table. I sat on the Hokage Monument, and scattered my Soldiers throughout the village to act as a massive, untraceable surveillance network.

The intel I gained told me that this tournament was just a catalyst for impending, world-shaking events. I realized I needed to take these Exams far more seriously than I originally planned, as the ramifications of looking weak on this stage could lead to major consequences.

Kumo had sent 45 participants (15 teams). And they didn't move like typical Genin. They moved in rigid, synchronized formations. Most of them were physically massive and carried oversized weapons. Interestingly, I didn't spot Omoi or Karui among them. I did, however, overhear a squad discreetly discussing the Hyuga compound and the Byakugan. It prompted me to station a few extra soldiers near the compound and be ready for an attempt on the day of the invasion.

Iwa had also sent 45 participants. Most were stocky, quiet, and highly methodical. Through my shadows, I caught them subtly tapping the walls and streets as they walked, secretly mapping out Konoha's underground infrastructure and structural weak points. Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi were also noticeably absent, which made sense, but it also somewhat confirmed that Onoki would not be appearing for the Finals. What was apparent was the heavy tension in the streets between the Kumo, Iwa, and Konoha shinobi. The bitter remnants of the previous wars threatened to boil over.

Kiri had sent 30 participants (10 teams). They were, in a way, terrifying. Or they would have been if I were a regular ninja. They made absolutely zero noticeable sound. Light footsteps, no heartbeat spikes, and no unnecessary chatter. Their eyes looked completely dead, their killing intent so perfectly masked it felt unnatural. They were pure Blood Mist assassins disguised as teenagers. Seeing them made me briefly reflect on Zabuza and Haku, and how they probably would have been good for Kiri's future, but looking at these ruthless killers, I was ultimately fine with the choices I'd made on the bridge.

Ame had also sent 30 participants. Some wore heavy breathing apparatuses and carried umbrellas. They didn't stand out or try to do anything that would draw attention to themselves, but my shadows caught them constantly scanning the crowds that they passed by, looking for someone specific. That person was most likely me. I made sure to assign a dedicated squad of Soldiers to watch over their movements.

The remaining three minor hidden villages had sent 12 participants (4 teams) each.

With Kusa (the Hidden Grass), I spotted Karin immediately. Her teammates treated her like a disposable tool, shoving her around and even talking about how her "talents" would be used effectively to put Kusa on the map. I had a Soldier attach itself to her shadow; when the Exams finished, I would use it to see how Orochimaru recruited her and locate his hidden laboratories.

With Taki (the Hidden Waterfall), they mostly had standard ninjas that talked about doing well in the exams. Through my observations of them, I did remember that Fu was from there, so I ordered a soldier to wait and attach itself to one of the surviving members when they were ready to leave for their village. With that, I'd be able to intercept the Akatsuki before they could even jump her and extract her Tailed Beast.

And finally, Oto (the Hidden Sound), brought in significantly more participants than they did in the canon. They were obviously just here to cause a massive ruckus and, unknowingly, act as cannon fodder during the invasion.

Doing the mental math, I noted there were well over a hundred more participants than in the original timeline. The sheer volume of trained, specialized killers possibly turning Konoha into a powder keg was pretty staggering.

After a few more minutes of observation, I recalled some of my shadows and hopped down from the monument, heading toward Training Ground 7. When I got there, Sasuke was panting heavily, his clothes drenched in sweat, while Sakura was stretching her tired muscles. Kakashi was leaning against a wooden post, reading his orange book.

As I walked up, completely unfazed and devoid of sweat, Kakashi snapped his book shut. He reached into his flak jacket and pulled out three crisp pieces of paper.

"You've all worked hard this past month," he said, his lone eye curving into a smile as he handed us each a slip. "So, I've officially recommended Team 7 for the Chunin Selection Exams. Report to the Academy tomorrow at 2:00 PM."

Sasuke snatched the paper from Kakashi's hand, his dark eyes flaring with a dangerous, competitive intensity. A sharp smirk cut across his exhausted face—this was the stage he had been bleeding for. Sakura swallowed hard, her eyes darting between the slip of paper, Sasuke, and then me. Her grip on the paper tightened, her shoulders squaring as she forced her anxiety down, replacing it with a rigid, determined focus.

I looked down at the registration paper. So, we still have to go to the Academy, huh? I thought.

The board was set, and the pieces were finally in play. It was time to show the world what The Shadow Monarch was capable of.
