Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: [The Price of the Board]

The die didn't respond.

Kael stared at it on the ground, waiting for the usual glow, the pulse, the system's quiet acknowledgment. Nothing came. Just a dull piece of gold resting on a tile that suddenly felt heavier than it should.

"That's… not normal," Rogan said, shifting his stance. His chain clinked softly against his armor, the sound sharp in the silence.

"No," Kael replied. "It's not."

Behind him, his [territory] flickered again—this time longer. The blue glow of his [Node Square] dimmed for a second before returning, weaker.

Liora's voice tightened. "Your network's reacting."

Kael didn't pick up the die yet. He crouched slowly, watching it like it might move on its own. "It's not just reacting," he said. "Something's interfering."

Mira stepped closer, her glowing cards circling her fingers. "That man—Virex—whatever he is… he's not playing by the same rules."

Thane's gaze stayed locked on the ground. "Then we stop thinking in rules."

Rogan let out a short breath. "Yeah, easy for you to say." He glanced around, then added, "So what's the plan? Because standing here while the ground decides to eat us doesn't sound great."

Kael finally picked up the die. It felt colder than before.

"We move," he said. "Back inside."

"No," Mira said immediately.

Everyone looked at her.

"If you go back now," she continued, "you'll only see what's happening after it reaches your territory. Whatever this is—it started here."

Kael hesitated. She wasn't wrong.

Behind them, the crack pulsed again. This time, it spread.

Not outward like a normal expansion.

Downward.

The tile beneath them darkened slightly, thin black lines forming like veins under the surface.

Rogan stepped back. "Yeah, I'm definitely not standing on that."

Thane moved without hesitation, stepping forward and driving the tip of his arrow into the tile. The surface didn't break—but the moment the arrow touched it, a sharp pulse shot through the ground.

Thane pulled back instantly. "It's connected."

"To what?" Liora asked.

Kael answered without looking up. "Everything."

The [System Interface] flickered violently:

[Alert: Property Value Fluctuation]

[Warning: External Interference Detected]

Mira's eyes widened slightly. "Property value?"

Kael stood slowly. "Monopoly rules," he said. "Every square has value. Income. Cost. Risk."

Rogan frowned. "Yeah, no kidding."

"No," Kael said, sharper now. "You don't get it. What happens if something changes that value?"

Silence.

Then Liora's expression shifted. "…Rent."

Kael nodded.

The ground beneath the crack pulsed again.

Stronger.

Back in his territory, the [Marketplace] flickered violently, its glow distorting for a split second.

"Kael," Liora said, urgency rising. "Your income—"

"I know."

The [System Interface] updated:

[Income Reduced: -20%]

[Cause: Unknown Distortion]

Rogan swore under his breath. "It's messing with your money?"

"It's messing with everything tied to it," Kael said.

Mira looked down at the crack again. "If it can affect value…"

"…it can affect ownership," Thane finished.

The realization hit all at once.

Kael's grip on the die tightened.

"If it drops a property's value low enough…"

"It becomes worthless," Mira said.

"And if it's worthless," Rogan added slowly, "…anyone can take it."

Or worse.

The ground shifted again.

This time, the black lines spread faster, crawling under nearby squares like cracks in glass.

Kael turned sharply. "We don't have time."

"For what?" Liora asked.

"To test it."

He stepped forward again, ignoring the tension in his chest.

"Kael—"

"I need to know how deep this goes."

He rolled the die.

It spun.

Slower than before.

It landed.

One.

Still no glow.

But this time—

Something answered.

The crack pulsed violently.

And Kael felt it.

Not through the die.

Through the ground.

A surge of pressure shot upward, not enough to knock him back—but enough to make his breath hitch.

"…It's reacting to me," he said.

Mira stepped back slightly. "Or recognizing you."

Rogan frowned. "That's worse."

Thane's voice was low. "Move."

Too late.

The tile beneath the crack split—just a little.

Not breaking apart, but separating.

And from the darkness beneath…

Something rose.

Not a creature.

Not fully.

Just… form.

A shape made of shifting lines and fragments of broken [routes], twisting in ways that didn't follow the board's structure.

Liora stepped back. "That's not a system construct."

"No," Kael said quietly.

The shape shifted again, and for a split second—

It looked like a player.

Then it broke apart again.

Mira's voice dropped. "…It's copying."

Rogan took another step back. "Yeah, no, I'm done with this thing."

The shape moved.

Fast.

Not toward Kael—

Toward his territory.

"No!"

Kael moved without thinking, stepping into its path.

The moment it touched the edge of his [route]—

The entire network flickered.

Hard.

The [System Interface] screamed to life:

[CRITICAL WARNING: Property Integrity Compromised]

Kael felt it this time.

Not just pressure.

Pain.

Like something was pulling at his control, trying to peel it away piece by piece.

He dropped to one knee, gripping the die tightly.

"Kael!" Liora shouted.

"I've got it—"

But he didn't.

The shape pressed harder, its broken lines digging into the structure of his [route], warping it.

Mira stepped forward, cards flaring. "Move!"

Kael didn't move.

He couldn't.

If he did—

The route would collapse.

The shape shifted again.

And for a second—

It had eyes.

Then it spoke.

Not clearly.

Not fully.

But enough.

"…value… mine…"

Kael's breath caught.

Behind him, his [Node Square] dimmed again.

The system flickered.

The board groaned.

And somewhere beneath it all—

Something else was waking up.
